so i was trying to work on catching up with inktober, and iām stuck on day ten (sweep) which was weird because obviously i need to draw soos for it, right ? but no, my brain goes « forget about inktober, draw ford, and draw ford specifically in this one style youāve been doodling him inĀ Ā»
so me and my brain compromised and iām now making a comic page featuring ford and soos for inktober. i do this to myself, really
i found one of those multicoloured pens from The Childhood. so take some bills. some thumbills
Some sketches for a concept Iāve had rattling around in my mind
(Tap for better quality)
okay now this has me curious. not looking for people to argue headcanons here or convince anyone of anything, though the rest of yall can do whatever you want
I'm just legitimately curious
is Stanford Pines on the aro/ace spectrum?
yes
no
results(no nuance allowed. binaries only)
first of all. yes. 100% that man is some type of ace. but also. itās complicated. i have a lot of different feelings about him and his sexuality. itās definitely not my flavour of aroace, but i relate to him in many similar ways.
this is a man who is so clearly queer, but because of how (and when) he was raised, has an overly hetero view of romance and sex. he mentions in writing multiple times how girls didnāt like him, but he never seemed to like them, either. it always seemed like he didnāt really care that they didnāt like him romantically, just that they thought he was weird.
that of course feeds his insecurities about not fitting in. he already never fit in with the kids because of his hands, and then heās getting ostracized in the romantic aspects of life, too. which are a huge part of teenagersā experiences. theyāre literally always talking about romance and love and dating and sex and OF COURSE if youāre not experiencing those things youāre going to get left out and pushed away.
now, iām not very well-rehearsed in the aroace spectrum (despite being a part of it, i know), i donāt know all the different terms for them so iām just trying to describe how i think ford feels. donāt know if it fits into a specific category and i donāt really know how to word it.
fordās life experiences definitely affected how his sexuality presents itself. he probably didnāt feel interested in romance as a teenager, but he was already shunned by the other kids so why would he question his lack of desire ? he could always chalk it up to « the people around him not liking him so why would he like themĀ ?Ā Ā»
he also probably never took into account that dating included being attracted to someone physically and that not being something he can control, because he never experienced it. and later in life, he was too focused on his studies and research to really think about it critically.
Bill, of course, comes into play with the fact that he was intellectually attractive to ford. he was an idea, a concept, something fascinating that ford can latch onto. i think that canonically, if asked about his relationship with bill, ford would insist it wasnāt « romanticĀ Ā» or « loveĀ Ā» because he doesnāt experience it the same way heās been taught to all his life. no matter how funny the memes are, i DONāT think ford (at least canonically. yes i have read and enjoyed fanfics where he is) is really physically attracted to bill (yes, even his angles). i think ford established a deep emotional connection with bill because he likes his personality. ford likes bill. he likes how he speaks, he likes their conversations, he likes his silly cartoon movements. yes, bill manipulated ford a lot with the charm and the compliments and that definitely aided in fordās fall into love, and wow iām getting off topic but thereās CONNECTION there.
ALSO ford is allowed to have funky sex with the triangle and still be ace guys. like itās really not that hard. you CAN have explicit stories (like cos) where they are indeed deeply romantically (yes cos is so freakin romantic fight me) and sexually involved and ford can still have those feelings of asexuality. in fact i LOVE it when we can have complicated feelings and complicated characters that donāt feel attraction in typical ways yet still have a weird little connection to someone that can be considered love. please have more of this. this is like my MAIN ATTRACTION TO BILLFORD PLEASE
like, no they are NOT NORMAL ABOUT EACH OTHER and they DONāT LIKE OR LOVE IN A TYPICAL MANNER. ford CANāT just look at someone and go « wow theyāre physically attractive i would like to pursue them romanticallyĀ Ā» but boy when he has CONVERSATIONS WITH BILL ? WHEN THEY TALK AND JOKE AND ALSO LATER WHEN THEY HATE EACH OTHER BUT STILL ARE WEIRD ABOUT IT ?? i eat that up.
okay i am super ranting but YEAH TL;DR I AM AN AROACE FORD TRUTHER, FORD IS ALLOWED TO HAVE SEX AND BE FREAKY ALL HE WANTS, AND I LOVE HIM NOT EXPERIENCING LOVE NORMALLY BECAUSE HEY. ME TOO.

well. the people did ask for it
you seem really odd and your blog intrigues me, do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters.
specifically, give me your hot takes on gravity falls. the hottest. the takest. what do you think is over/underrated. what do you wish they would have explored more. who do you think needed more screentime and who do you think had too much. what would you like the people to know
Bahaha why thank you for askingā¦
Ooh gosh lots of questions. Yeesh I think my biggest hot take revolves around how Ford mistreats Stan in the show. Specifically, my hot take is: Stan did nothing wrong.
The perpetual motion machine: Stan didnāt mean to break it. I know he did, but he didnāt mean to, and he tried to fix it. Yes, the action did ruin Fordās chances of going to a prestigious college and that sucks of course. However, the consequences of that were incredibly unwarranted on the fact that Stan was a child. Getting kicked out at 17 is ridiculous, and the fact that Ford didnāt seem to think it was unreasonable at the time is insane.
Backupsmore: Iām sorry, but Ford is such a whiny baby about going to a ālesser college.ā Honestly, not getting into west coast tech didnāt affect him almost at all. He literally graduated ahead of schedule, had 13 PHDs, and got an enormous grant for research. Anywhere Ford would have went, he would have succeeded. Itās not like west coast tech was his childhood dream either, he didnāt even know about it until the principal told him and his family about it.
The portal incident: First off⦠Stan didnāt even have to come, letās just get that out of the way. Stan came because he knew his brother needed help even though he believed Ford wanted nothing to do with him. He came to the cabin so hopeful, only to be immediately shot down by Ford. Stan calls him selfish, and Fordās only defense to that point is to immediately deflect blame and bring up west coast tech again even though itās been ten years at this point. Literally Stan has been struggling to survive and make ends meet, getting him involved in crime and drugs while still in his formative years, and Ford would have been totally fine if he didnāt contact Bill out of desperation.
Tale of two Stans: Holy moly this episode pmo so badly. I will literally scream every time Ford punches Stan. 30 years heās been trying to get him back and heās met with a blow to the face. Thereās not even hesitation, showing that Ford has spent the entire time in the portal hating Stan. How heartbreaking to realize that. Ford literally comes back and his first order of business is to kick Stanley back out of his life. He just genuinely does not believe Stan is capable of being anything else than the image Ford has of him in his head. Confirmation bias my guy.
āThank Youā: I do not care what Ford has to say. One thank you is literally the least he could do. The fact that heās so stubborn about it that heās willing to ragebait Stan in the middle of weirdmageddon just to have the last word is insanely immature. Stan always puts his family first, and Ford is blind if he canāt see that.
Anywho I hate canon Ford with a passion.
Fanfiction Ford on the other hand is my hubby
BTW these opinions could also be a result of a bias for Stan being my favorite character and I accept the fact that it may flaw my perspective. As much as I draw Billford and I love Fordās character in the fandom, I hate that mf in canon. I find him to be so selfish in the way he treats Stan. Itās incredible how much the community and fanfiction has been able to completely change my perspective on his character.
As for the other questions I think I like the show mostly how it is (besides Ford being a meanie). I wish Grenda and Wendy got more screen time, and I wish they focused a bit less on the Wendy and Dipper storyline.
Overrated: Fiddauthor- idk just not really my cup of tea. It makes sense I just donāt see it. Also overrated is FiddleStan. Dont get me wrong, I ADORE FiddleStan, but it just doesnāt make any sense canonically and kinda just feels like a popularized crack ship.
Underrated: THE HENCHMANIACS. All of my favorite fanfics actually showcase Bill building relationships with the henchmaniacs. They arenāt just his subordinates, theyāre genuinely his friends, and I think thatās important. Also Teeth is my baby and my beloved. I love him so much.
Thank you again for the ask, I love to think about this show and write my thoughts out. Sometimes I feel like Iām too late to the game when it comes to creating gravity falls content, but itās little interactions like these that remind me why I stay in this fandom! ā¤ļø
okay iām home from work
*cracks fingers* letās do this.
first of all: HARD AGREE. Stan is my all-time favourite character in gravity falls and i will die defending him from false accusations.
about the machine, YES, he DIDNāT MEAN TO, and those who say he still « should have told himĀ Ā» donāt get that as a seventeen year old kid, you go look at your brotherās machine when you know youāre not supposed to, you bump the table while venting to yourself, a piece falls off but! you put it back on immediately and the machine still works fine. Of course stan wasnāt going to tell ford, he DIDNāT THINK ANYTHING BROKE PERMANENTLY !
I do think that ford overestimated stanās ability to survive in the world by himself. fordās logic is a bit skewed due to the fact that stan has always been a protector figure for him. the strong one. he probably went « stanleyās got the social skills/charisma and the brute force to make it by himselfĀ Ā» and then proceeded to shove all his guilt down in place of his grudge. yeahhhhh stop being in denial ford it was definitely messed up and wrong of your father to kick stan out at that age.
the thing he says about stan « ruiningĀ Ā» fordās life ? completely false. yeah, his life wasnāt derailed by much at all, yet he still brings it up ten years after the fact (i mean obviously that has something to do with that being the last interaction they had before the decade-long avoidance, and it being on the forefront of their minds when they see each other again because of it, but still).
ford probably thinks itās « the principle of the matterĀ Ā» or something but ford, not everything is the principle that matters, sometimes itās just what happened that matters. and what happened was, you still got into college and are researching the things you want to without having to pay for any of it yourself. honestly dream come true.
on the other hand, i also see and give a nod to the perspective that ford said a lot of things he shouldnāt have during that tensions-high reunion, mostly because of the paranoia, frustration, lack of sleep, and recovering from literal torture when they meet up.
that punch ? yeah, no. it kills me every time. i hate it, i hate that ford does it, i hate stanās hopeful words before it happens, terrible experience all around. i donāt, however, think that ford spent all the time in the portal hating stan. itās one of those things where you donāt realise you missed them ātil theyāre gone again, and i bet he spent years in the portal feeling guilty over how their reunion went. But, itās also that moment of forgetting what you missed once you have them back. not defending ford on that punch, i hate it so much, but i really donāt think ford hates stan, you know ?
« Thank youĀ Ā» ? sighhhhh yeahh, ford reallly should have done that. stan literally spent three decades working on bringing him back, not even BRUSHING up against everything stan had to learn and figure out in order to get it to work, ford was really being petty there. In the scene with the zodiac, however, i find myself frustrated at both of them. ford goaded stan with the grammar, but stan shouldnāt have taken the bait. and the fact that stan was refusing to hold hands to literally stop the apocalypse because of their sibling grudge was also petty.
ANyWAYS ONTO HAPPIER STUFF. YES i think both grenda and candy should have gotten more screen time and character development/depth. theyāre fun. i like them. i wanted more. Wendy on the other hand, hmmm. I think wendy got plenty of screen time overall, i just wish less of it was through the lenses of dipperās crush on her or her relationship with robbie. just romance and wendy overall should have been less connected, and i wanted her as a more established character. ALSO i wish we got to see her interacting with her family, I WANT MORE CORDUROYS WOO i love those guys i wish they got more screen time.
fiddauthor and fiddlestan ? eh, donāt particularly like either. fiddauthor is funny to think about sometimes in a sad way, like fiddleford literally abandoned his wife and kid to go fall in love with his college buddy whoās definitely in love with that weird demon that possesses him and thatās just. sad. i kind of thought fiddlestan WAS a crack ship. like, they BARELY interact in canon, and thatās just as old man mcgucket. also i donāt think theyād get along very well.
FREAKIN LOVE THE HENCHMANIACS (except keyhole he can go sit in the timeout corner and NOT ENJOY IT DONāT ENJOY IT KEYHOLE ITāS A PUNISHMENT AND NOT THE FUN KIND GOSH DARN IT I HATE YOU) iām sorry stump has ruined keyhole for me i canāt think of him anymore ever he is my sleep paralysis demon. OTHER THAN THAT, LOVE PYRONICA SO MUCH, LOVE TEETH SO MUCH, AND TIBAP MADE ME LOVE AMY ! i love bill having friends who stay with him through all his destruction of both others and self, i love him having friends so much. he needs them desperately.
okay. i think iām done. i just really wanted to talk about gravity falls. i donāt get to do this often. this was great. iām going to bed.
Yassssssss agree agree agree agree. Iām glad my statements have reached fellow Stan defenders. The whole āprinciple of the matterā thing rings so true with Ford. And of course I do give Ford some grace for the things he said during the portal incident since he was being psychologically tortured (š¬), BUT he still thought all of those things beforehand. The mental state he was in just brought them to light.
Also yeah I do agree that Ford didnāt hate Stan during the portal. I just think that the punch would make Stan believe he did. Stan already probably saw himself as pretty low in his brotherās eyes, and the punch was all he needed to confirm that mentality so he could immediately start putting walls up again.
*scratches back of neck* yeahā¦. the brothers were both being petty FOR SURE during weirdmageddon, I just canāt with the fact that Ford always acts like the more mature twin and pulls that absolute bullcrap. āGrammar, Stanley.ā Yeah nah I woulda lunged too.
Completely agree on what you said about Wendy. I wanted more screen time of her interacting with people other than boys. We got a little with her and Mabel especially in Society of the Blind Eye, but I really wish we couldāve gotten that Wendy / Stan bonding episode that got cut.
FiddleStan definitely only works when theyāre young and if itās for angst purposes with Fiddleford using Stan in a toxic way to fill in the gap when Ford left. Other than that it makes no sense lol (still love it though).
Also I love Keyhole. I love the way Stump bullies Keyhole and it hasnāt changed how much I love him. Heās just funny to me and is the Henchmaniac equivalent of Thompson and I love Thompson so henceforth I love Keyhole.
I freaking love talking about the show. I talk about fanfiction a lot but I rarely go back to the roots of the show and itās so important to do so. And itās a fun way to interact with people!
supposed to be sleeping but am instead trying to decide if iām gonna stake this as a gravity-falls-only blog, or allow myself to post other stuff and other art i do. decisions decisions
you seem really odd and your blog intrigues me, do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters.

i actually cant share any preview sketches because every single thing is too spoilery but here's how the cos7 animatic is turning out. because im making cos animatics now against all odds
