#1000%#the game is literally fuckin supported by gem purchases #ad revenue is peanuts for most websites (even without factoring in most career visitors to any site using adblock)#money is required for games services and websites to exist #and users are not being forced to pay #like FR could have a subscription model #and yet 99.99% of the game is accessible for free to play users #ALSO there's no such thing as a gem-only breed being “inaccessible”#every time a gem breed releases it takes approximately 1 hour for people to breed them and instahatch the nests #so within like 3 days every time you very quickly get loads of increasingly cheap hatchlings of the new breed #EVERY TIME #look at imperials #they were exclusive to a certain tier of kickstarter backers #and now they're everywhere #skydancers too #people who want everything to be free come across as over-entitled children who were never told no you cannot have the treat right now #it's been QUITE a while since I bought some gems I should get some more #I have important non-game things to fit in my budget first #flight rising

#Yeah it definitely reads that way to me you worded it exactly as I interpreted it OP #Maybe it's an American thing where they constantly over-correct on cultural issues #but it reads like the devs are trying to avoid any possible way they could be perceived as making a misstep #when the qilin is really not the animal they need to be careful of - it's appeared in hundreds of video games many of which are western #probably most famously Monster Hunter where it is a lion-faced caprine dragon (and where like in many other games your job is to kill it)#it's been given infinite redesigns over the last 2k years and has origins around 1000 BCE? from a poem iirc #it's a chimeric mythological semi-divine creature like the hippocampus kelpie chimera unicorn centaur amphithere siren mermaid golem and #cockatrice kitsune cerberus hippogriff harpy ophiotaurus dryad basilisk roc pegasus sphinx and naga to name a few #many of which are older and a number of which are literal deities (also the qiriq and foo familiars)#with ancient mythological creatures adaption comes with the territory - that's the only reason we still know about some of them #the qilin itself was even re-interpreted for a while as a GIRAFFE after iirc some were brought to China?#giraffes keep freaking people out throughout history and getting into their mythology because of how weird and huge they are it's great #DID YOU KNOW!! The Daubous Giraffes are the largest animal petroglyphs on earth at 6 metres tall and dated to around 5000 BCE #they're in a deserty part of Niger and were made when the local climate was a savannah and may depict an unknown extinct species #ANYWAY It's noble of them to be so careful but it does also feel like certain loud parts of the fanbase bullied the devs into this #and as a dev you should never let your fanbase bully you - considering constructive and proper criticism yes but not bullying #every mythological creature or deity mentioned in my tags above has been adapted and re-interpreted MANY MANY times throughout #millenia (both from their own cultures and not) that's how human culture and mythology works and how it's shared #even in like video games and movies and shit -- that's just a newer version of putting them in poems and stories OKAY ANYWAY #I 1000% get it and respect it as a positive approach to take to avoid disrespecting cultural heritage but FR does not need to worry about #disrespecting mythology most of the time IMO it's a damn pet game (Monster Hunter gets no complaints about killing and butchering kirin)#and it feels like they're concerned about backlash from shit-stirrers in the userbase and trying to avoid a repeat of the auroboa stuff #it reminds me of when Wolvden had to take the generic leaf/bead/feather jewellery off of their herbalist npc because they were worried abou #it being offensive when those are like the most basal jewellery types they date back ~200k years and were also used by our relatives #(neanderthals and denisovans and possibly a third species)#the short of it is: if you're going to consult cultural consultants for things like this you have to do it for ALL of the mythological stuf #not just the ones you're worried about getting flak for #lokenosse talks #well not really it's a tag ramble #also reminds me of people going >:(( DON'T WEAR KIMONOS while many Japanese people are like yeah celebrate our cultural heritage with us
