Mlle Rachel (Elizabeth-Rachel Félix), the greatest french actress, was born in 1820, of poor Jewish Alsatian parents. As a child she had a beautiful voice and was discovered singing in the streets by Choron, who admitted her to his school. Later she lost her voice and studied for the stage. She made her début at the Théâtre Français in 1838, and from that time on scored a triumph in every rôle she undertook. She visited New York in 1855. During her American tour she contracted a severe cold that resulted in her death. She passed away at Cannes in 1858. Photo after the painting by Edouard Dubufe.
