16 year old Elizabeth Taylor in her iconic Philippe Halsman portraits taken in 1948.
In October 1948, she arrived at Halsman’s New York City portrait studio, which still exists today and is now home to the Halsman Archive. “In my studio Elizabeth was quiet and shy. She struck me as an average teenager, except that she was incredibly beautiful,” Halsman reflected in his book Halsman: Sight and Insight.
“On a purely technical level, he pointed out that two sides of my face photographed differently," Taylor would later recall. "One side looked younger; the other more mature. In posing for Halsman, I became instantly aware of my body.” She also recalled him shouting one particularly memorable instruction for her: “You have bosoms, so stick them out!”
Taylor had worn her own earrings to the shoot, but she didn’t wear a necklace. During the sitting, Halsman borrowed his wife Yvonnes blue triangle pendant necklace and placed it around Elizabeth’s neck. This subtle decision added a new level of impact to the portrait. The necklace was later passed down to Halsman’s daughter Irene, who still cherishes the keepsake today.
“[Halsman] was the first person to make me look at myself as a woman... After my session with Halsman, I was much more determined to control my screen image. I wanted to look older so I insisted on cutting my hair. In 1949 I went from portraying Amy in Little Women, another child-woman to playing a full-fledged romantic lead in The Conspirator. At barely seventeen, I grew up for all America to see.”
Halsman ran into Taylor a few weeks later in Hollywood and when approached by him, she couldn't remember where they had met. “She could have not hurt me more," he would later reflect. "Her words showed again how important a photograph can be and how unimportant the photographer who made it.”

Original LIFE magazine caption: Walking in rain, Dean wanders anonymously down the middle of New York's Times Square. His top floor garret on Manhattan's West Side is no more home to him, he says, than the farm in Indiana. But he feels that his continuing attempt to find out just where he belongs is the source of his strength as an actor.

When Brigitte Bardot met Pablo Picasso at his studio in Vallauris, on the French Riviera, 1956. Photos by Jerome Brierre.
In 1956 Brigitte attended the Cannes Film Festival, just down the coast from Vallauris, and came to visit the artist. She had become a media sensation at the 1953 festival and her fame spread to the United States. LIFE magazine sent Jerome Brierre to photograph the two together. The pairing of the young and beautiful Bardot, 21, with the older Picasso, 74, who was notorious for his affairs with much younger women, was told it would make for a good story.
Picasso never painted Brigitte, but Lydia Corbett, one of Picasso’s frequent models at the time, claimed Bardot saw her at Cannes and adopted her blonde-haired, ponytailed look as her own.

Natalie Wood photographed by William Claxton in New York City, 1961. These were taken on the balcony of the Sherry-Netherland Hotel on East 59th Street.
The last photo was used as the cover on Natalie‘s biography called ‘Reflections on a Legendary Life’, which is the first family authorised book on her. There’s a foreword by her husband Robert Wagner and an afterword by close friend Robert Redford. Her daughter, Natasha also contributed to it. It’s honestly the perfect book if you want to know more about her life!
The day Elvis Presley and Sophia Loren met, photographed by Bob Willoughby at Paramount Studios, 1958. According to Willoughby, Loren spotted Presley eating lunch in the Paramount commissary and decided to go over and introduce herself. Which is to say, she promptly sat in his lap, gave him a kiss, and began mussing his hair. He didn't mind.
"I didn’t know Elvis at all, but we were both making films at Paramount and eating in the cafeteria and we both thought, ‘Oh, I want to meet you.’ And so I sat in his lap and we laughed like two kids. I played with his hair and joked about all the women who were screaming for him. We were really just like two little kids." - Sophia Loren
“'I bet you wish they would stop screaming' said Sophia. 'Never' answered Elvis. 'And I'll tell you why; they cover up my mistakes. Lots of times when I start reaching for a high note I know I'm not going to make it so I just make some crazy movement and the kids scream and no one knows the difference. You know, the hardest thing in the World is to be yourself. Everytime I'm myself I get criticised for it'. At this Sophia comforted him; 'Elvis I think you are a very nice boy' 'Thanks a lot!' answered Elvis. 'You know thats the worst thing you can say about me'. The King of Rock n Roll is one of Miss Lorens most devoted fans. He turned to one reporter and said; 'You know, I've seen every picture she's ever made. She's only seen one of mine'.” - Bob Willoughby for ‘The People’ magazine, 1994.
