Makki Is My Jam

Max couldn’t sleep. It was the middle of the night, but he just couldn’t. Especially with how loud Neil and Nikki were snoring. Or just Neil…where was Nikki?

Max got his clothes on and decided to go on a walk by the lake. Maybe he’d find Nikki there. Surely enough, there she was, sitting on a tree stump by the lake. It sounded like she was…crying.

Max rushed over to his companion and embraced her, which startled her. “Agh! WHO…Max?” She asked. Max realized what he was doing and let go out of embarrassment. “Oh God, I’m sorry! Didn’t mean to scare you!” He blushed softly. Nikki sniffled “It’s okay I was just…surprised.” “Why are you crying?” Max asked concernedly. Nikki looked at him and sighed. She couldn’t keep repressing her emotions. She decided to tell him.

“Well… Summer’s almost over. You know that, right?” “Yeah,” Max replied “so?”. “I just…I don’t want to go back home…” Nikki was visibly upset and her voice sounded a little fearful. Max figured he knew what was happening, but was still unsure. “Are things okay at home?” He asked. Nikki shook her head. “Momma hates me…she always yells at me for being a d-disappointment…” she responded, shakily and through tears. The feeling of being a disappointment to parents was all too familiar to Max. Nikki continued “…a-and sometimes, when she’s really angry she….she beats me.” Nikki couldn’t go on. She was sobbing.

Max was shocked by this revelation. He hugged Nikki close. “Shhh, don’t cry…I’ll talk to David about this tomorrow. No parent should ever hit their child.” He reassured. Nikki managed to get a response out through her tears. “I…I just…I’m just a constant disappointment…I want to be a good daughter…nobody will ever love me.” Those last words infuriated Max. “Dammit Nikki, I LOVE YOU!”

He covered his mouth after realizing what he had said. His face reddened. “I fucked up, didn’t I?” Max whispered nervously. Nikki was speechless. “You…really? You like me?” She appeared to be blushing as well. Max decided he needed to come clean too. “I always have, Nikki…you’re just so fun and charming and brave and cute a-” he was cut off by a kiss. “That’s funny because…I like you too!” Nikki said with a smile, her face bright red. Max hugged her. “I…I promise I’ll try to protect you.” “Considering our adventures, I’m usually the one protecting you!” Nikki chuckled. They fell asleep stargazing.
