Hazing initiations are believed to serve as a test not only of recruits’ masculinity, but also of their readiness to adopt a near agentic-less state determined by the power structures of team leadership (Kirby & Wintrup, 2002). Hazing is thought to be a ritualistic enshrining of leadership positions, where team leaders are granted considerable power whereas recruits are positioned as docile. However, hazing is also thought to serve multiple other social control purposes.

Synopsis:

“If you want to leave,” she said quietly, “I’ll take you away tomorrow night.”

Hinata did not answer.

She only lowered her head, her dark lashes hiding her pale eyes. The hand Temari was holding slowly pulled away, not to reject her, but to rest over the full curve of her stomach.

The child inside seemed to move.

Hinata’s fingers paused, then gently stroked the soft fabric. The movement was so tender that it almost hurt to watch.

“Temari,” Hinata said, “where else can I go?”

Temari opened her mouth, but no answer came.

“One day, you won’t be afraid of me,” he said.

Hinata looked up, “Do you truly believe that? Because you’ll treat me well?”

“Yes.”

“Because you love me?” Sasuke did not hesitate, “Yes.”

Another tear slipped down Hinata’s cheek. “That is what makes it frightening.”

Sasuke stood completely still. Hinata turned towards the window. The sky outside had begun to brighten, a thin line of white appeared beyond the trees, falling across the river near the estate. That was the direction of home. Sasuke approached the bed again. This time, Hinata did not move away, but she did not look at him either.

“Do you hate me?” he asked. It was the same question he had asked when they were ten, at the gate where he had once caught her trying to escape. Back then, Hinata had said she did not know. Now, she gave him the same answer, “I don’t know.”

Sasuke knelt beside the bed, he did not touch her, he only placed both hands on his knees and looked at the profile that had become unfamiliar to him in a single night. “Then stay until you know.”

Hinata closed her eyes, “Do I have any choice?”

Sasuke did not lie, “No.” It was the only truth he could give her.
