  “ Yes ma’am! ”

  Hands went up to catch the airborne bottle, fingers brushing the cool metal– before it hit the ground. Whoops! Feliciano quickly bent down and scooped it back up, fingers pinched against the bright red cap before he popped it off and set it on the counter.

  “ Ooo, yeah! That sounds like fun! ” he answered, taking a moment to shift and mimic Lapis’s position. 

  “ Three… two… one! ” he called, finger pressing down upon the nozzle as soon as he finished the countdown.

Lapis was ready. She’d seem humans consume globs of this stuff on their drinks, so it should really be no problem. But Lapis wasn’t counting on the taste. In fact, she hadn’t even thought about it. She was not at all prepared for the...sickening sweet. 

She squeezed the nozzle, letting the cream fill her mouth before it actually hit her. She coughed, dropping the bottle onto the counter and spitting.

“What the hell happened to you?”

Was his reply after he saw the girl in front of his room. Usually he would turn someone away but seeing the girl in a mess is something. Gary decided to let it pass. He gave her permission as he opened the door for her. 

“Sure, but don’t do anything funny or you’ll be kicked out.” He answered. “There’s an extra towel if you need it.”

“Oh...thank you.” She was awkwardly quiet as she padded inside, her feet leaving little smudges on the floor. Maybe she should say something nice about his hair or something? 

But all she could think about was water. In the shower, her body left mud streaks and hand-prints all over the place, but she sighed as the cold water washed off every speck of dirt. From cold to colder, the changing temperature was her only indication that she was taking a while. Finally she got out and toweled off instead of shaking off.

“My world! It’s been so long since I last had a good coffee, let me see…” there are no indicators of hurry in any of her gestures, from the tapping of her manicured fingernails to the soft hum escaping her lips. Blue eyes fell on the barista, her eyebrow arching up slightly. “What would you recommend, my darling? I won’t accept anything that isn’t the best.”

Making coffee wasn’t hard. It was actually kind of fun, especially when she got to shake and stir stuff. But she didn’t know why everyone took drinking it so seriously. It was bitter when it was plain, and when it wasn’t, she put so much stuff in it that it didn’t even look like food.

She giggled at the others aplogy. Muffet was just a moment away from letting them know that she was next in line, but at least they figured that out on their own. “Good afternoon to you too, dear. Please, there’s no rush though!”

Now that was an odd request to her. How does one… not eat before? She cocked her head to the side in curiosity, half tempted to ask, but that might be a bit out of line. At least for the employee of a bakery to ask.

“Well… I can’t say I’ve had to think about that before. But I think it might be best to start simple, with a basic cake or cupcake?” she said, though she wasn’t the most confident in that suggestion. “Have you had anything to eat before, or are you starting with sweets?”

“Cupcakes...are the small ones, right?” That seemed acceptable. Though she felt the effects of hunger, she didn’t want to rush it or hurt her form by trying to eat too much too fast. She knew cake wasn’t necessarily healthy, but she really didn’t care about that aspect.

“Can I use your bathroom?”

Lapis stood in his door way, caked head to toe in dried mud. She just wanted to step out into the rain for a few minutes. She hadn’t expected to get this dirty, or to go home and find her own shower broken. But maybe she should have. Her motel wasn’t known for being totally accommodating.

  Nine times.

  Feliciano couldn’t help staring at the radio as the song replays itself once more, brows furrowed together. He’s worked here long enough to recognize the lack of variety, but it wasn’t something he could get used to. He reached over and turned the radio in his direction, ready to mess with it until he could find another station. 

  Unfortunately, it proved to be fruitless and the Italian simply flipped the radio off. Maybe he could look up different stations when he was off the clock? It would certainly solve the current problem, but that would mean asking his co-worker for her taste in music and–

  Well, he wouldn’t lie: she made him a bit nervous. Being addressed suddenly didn’t help much either.

  “ Ve-! O - Oh! ” The sight alone brought back a recent memory, namely that of certain nations thinking it would be a good idea to have a contest to see how much whipped topping they could eat before choking.

  ( Nothing was accomplished that day besides America and Prussia receiving quite the ass-whooping, but that was standard for world meetings. )

  “ Hand me a bottle, please! I wanna do this too! ”

“Wait, really?”

She was so surprised, that she didn’t even notice the sudden silence from the radio. It did occur to her though, that if he was savvy enough to tinker with it, maybe he could tell her something about this rock she was always hearing about on there. 

She grinned and tossed a bottle at him. Maybe humans weren’t so bad after all. They were smart enough to stay out of gem business on Earth, and apparently they knew how to have fun too.

“What?”

She didn’t mean to snap at the stranger. Well, maybe a little...only because they were looking at Lapis like she was a total weirdo, and not just someone who’d darted outside as soon as they saw it’d started raining. 

Now, up to her neck in mud, Lapis had started to walk home, only to be met with staring. Well, it wasn’t like her room could get any dirtier. 

So many eyes and arms! But it wasn’t scary the way Malachite’s reflection had been. It was...pretty, in the way that the fusion statues always were at the Sea Spires. She was pretty...

“Sorry!” She’d been starring so long, she hadn’t even noticed she was next in line. She tore her eyes up to look at the menu, but she had no idea where to start.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show

If Lapis cared at all, she would have noticed that this was the ninth time she’d heard that song today. The empty cafe’s radio apparently didn’t have much of a selection. But Lapis was apathetic to it all, her only thought being what the heck was a rock show? She was a rock, but she didn’t have her own show.

She didn’t even have her powers, and with no way for her gem to power her body, she had to eat and sleep just like a human. To do that, she needed money. Steven had told her Earth had opportunities...places called coffee shops. So, here she was...working alongside a human. 

They had no customers right now, meaning Lapis didn’t even try to look busy. Would this human rat on her for laying around? Maybe...but there was a way to test how cool he was.
