18th january 1486, King Henry VII married Elizabeth of York at Westminster Abbey.
(my ‘romanticised’ version of Henry/Elizabeth wedding… It should go without saying that this gifset is obviously not *entirely* historically accurate ;D)
Near Christmas 1485, the House of Commons, when granting Henry VII the usual royal supplies, added a petition “that he would please to take the princess Elizabeth to wife”. When this was read every member of the assembled houses of parliament rose and bowed to the king, who answered “that he was most willing so to do.” From that day Elizabeth of York was treated as queen consort.
Henry and Elizabeth were married January 18, 1486, at Westminster abbey, by their kinsman the Archbishop of Canterbury, “by whose hand,” says a quaint chronicler, “was first tied together the sweet posy of the red and white roses.” It had been planned for some time and their betrothal, which had been cooked up by Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York’s mother and Edward IV’s widow and Margaret Beaufort, saw the union of the Houses of York and Lancaster which led to the “a new unified regime in which York and Lancaster would sink their ancient differences.”
The marriage between Henry and Elizabeth seems to have been happy and successful. The couple had seven children but only three reached adulthood: Henry, Margaret and Mary.
