When it comes to the topic of art, most of us will readily agree that music is a form of art. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of which kinds of music are considered art. Whereas some are convinced that only opera, classical, or jazz music are considered high art, I maintain that R&B music should also be considered. In my opinion, The singer/songwriter Frank Ocean is one of the best in the game. In his song āBad Religionā, he has a conversation with an assumed Arabic taxi driver. Ocean feels like a sinner, so he resorts to spilling his emotions to his taxi driver. The driver responds with,āAllah hu akbarā which means, āGod is the greatestā. The driver was telling Ocean to confide in God, but as the title says, Ocean believes it to be a āBad Religionā. Ocean is an out bisexual man, which is considered a sin in many religions. He says, ā If it brings me to my knees, Itās a bad religion, this unrequited loveā He purposefully draws attention to the fact that heās expected to pray to God for forgiveness of his sin, yet his sin is the reason his relationship with God is strained. Itās similar to Dan Savages viewpoint in āOur Man of Perpetual Sorrowā, seeing as they are both members of the LGBTQ community, and they both struggle to consider themselves religious because of their sexuality.
