What usually amounted to a three hour walk for Katniss that day stretched to nearly five hours as she was accompanied by her husband, who continued to insist that he was fine despite the walk clearly having tired him out some time ago. She didn't rush him, understanding that he needed to do this for himself, though she thought, more than once, that things would be a lot easier for them both if they could afford to get a horse someday.
As they drew close to the estate, she caught the weariness in her husband's form turn into relief upon hearing the barking of the dogs announce their arrival, which prompted a fond smile from Katniss. Her smile remained the rest of the way to her husband dropping to the ground where the dogs greeted him as cheerfully as he greeted them. Upon being met by an unfamiliar man at the door to the estate, however, her smile disappeared, and her reply to the man was terse enough that her husband, still surrounded by the happy dogs behind her, noticed the change in her posture and stilled in concern.
"No. I'm here to trade with Janet, and my husband wishes to say hello to the family."
"Och, aye, of course--" Jamie nods politely, his lips curling in a smile. He's not used to this, to greeting strangers and offering what hospitality he can. After being at Leoch, and in France before that, living rough and by his own rules, transitioning to the role of laird has been... touch and go. His sister would say that he's making things worse; his brother-in-law would say that Jamie is trying, at least.
Jenny, of course, has disappeared to tend to her merino sheep, and likely gone to the village to speak with some of the tenants. Ian has gone with her, leaving Jamie to handle the house, and any visitors, on his own.
"Janet-- Jenny, she's my sister. My name's James Fraser." He ducks his head in a small bow. "She's out wi' the sheep just now, can I offer ye some food? Or a wee dram? Have ye traveled far? Please, come in--" He gestures to the house behind him, motioning for them both to come in.
Broch Tuarach. The name didn't ring any bells and it made a wave of panic swell in her chest. Where was she? She couldn't have traveled far. Anne had only taken a short walk from the house, up to the ridge to see the circling of stones. No more than a mile or two. Certainly not far enough away to be in a place she'd never heard of.
Her mouth went dry as she scrambled around in her brain for answers. Maybe she'd hit her head? That could account for not remembering. But she remembered everything else. Well, almost everything else. She remembered her name, her real name. She remembered her age, her birthplace, all the useless information that didn't seem prevalent in a situation like this. So, then what in the world was going on?
"What? N-No, nothing's amiss." As soon as the words tumble from her lips, she backtracks. "W-Well, yes, things are amiss. Quite a few things, but I..." Anne rose a hand to her head, the dizziness creeping back into the forefront of her brain. She needed to get home, but how was she supposed to do such a thing when she didn't even know where she was?
"Can you tell me how far it is to get to Inverness?" If she could make it to the city, then surely she could find someone to contact her employers to tell them of her situation. The longer she stayed away, the more she risked losing her position at the Dunsany home and thus risking her entire life as she knew it. "I don't wish to pester you, sir, I... I just want to go home and, to be rather frank, I don't know where that is. I don't know where this is."
Quickly, Jamie gestures to the steps, indicating she should sit. The last thing he needs is for a stranger to faint in the dooryard -- Christ, Jenny would wring his neck if she found him being anything less than hospitable. He's supposed to be the laird, after all, though he's not had much practice. "Sit, lass," he says hurriedly. "Can I fetch ye a dram? Or a cup of water...? Food? Have ye eaten? I can have Mrs. Crook make ye a plate--"
She speaks then of Inverness, and Jamie pauses, calculating in his mind just how long it would take to get there. "Hmm. A day's ride to the east, perhaps, if ye've a healthy horse." As the words leave his mouth, he winces slightly. Clearly she doesn't have a healthy horse. She probably doesn't have any horse.
"Ye're at Lallybroch--" He gestures to the house, the land around it. "Broch Mordha is the closest village, but if ye're lookin' for where the English are stationed, Fort William is where ye'll want to go." It's said casually, but he keeps an eye on her reaction; there's not much sympathy for the English in the Highlands.
been a bit mia because life got busy and also i went to a convention and got to meet neil n.ewbon and samantha b.eart which i still haven't fully processed but i'm going to try and be a bit more active now that that's over!
they were both so incredibly nice and kind and respectful, and somehow i also made it into the bg3 panel with a decent seat and the rest of the cast that were there were funny and the questions were good and it was just all-around a great con and great weekend!
Anne's head ached and she felt as though she'd fallen off a cliffside. Perhaps she had. After all, she couldn't seem to remember how exactly she'd managed to get here... wherever here was. The last she remembered was trailing through some ruins that she'd found on a midday walk. Nothing special, just a scattering of boulders in a circle. Hardly menacing, and not dangerous. But then what?
She'd woken up dazed and confused and, although she was slightly less dazed now, she was still thoroughly confused. How long had she walked before finally stumbling across the quaint village? Hours? Days? She couldn't even remember what day it had been when she'd went for a walk in the first place. Her feet had managed to carry her forward, through the brush and trees, over hills and into the clearing. They had worked hard to bring her somewhere safe, and only seemed to hold on to the last bits of energy until the stranger was in range.
"I..." She felt wobbly on her feet as she glanced around her. This wasn't still Scotland, was it? It looked a bit like the countryside she'd been residing in, but something about it was... different. She didn't recognize the landscape nor any landmarks, but something about the air was familiar. Surely she would've remembered a place like this, right? "I'm sorry, but... Where exactly are we?"
Jamie doesn't recognize the stranger, though to be fair, he wouldn't expect himself to. He knows from browsing Ian's ledgers that there have been more people who've settled in Broch Mordha since he's been away. Perhaps she's from there? But-- no, she looks as though she's been traveling, what with the hem of her dress dirty and what looks like brambles in her hair.
Jamie steps down off the final stair, taking slow, careful steps towards her. He doesn't want to frighten her off, after all, especially not if she needs his help. "You're at-- this is Broch Tuarach." He gestures to the house behind him, her lack of knowledge telling him that she's most definitely not a tenant of the small town just over the hill from the laird's home.
"Is… something amiss wi' ye then, lass? Do ye need help?" Already, his eyes scan the trees behind her as though someone is about to burst from the woods with a sword in their hands.

It feels good to be home, to have his feet firmly planted on soil that he has cultivated, and his father before him. Jamie's heart swells each time he wakes to the sound of his sister's lambs bleating as they're shepherded past the house, each time his brother calls him into the study to go over the rents, each time his nephew perches on his knee begging to hear another story of Jamie's time spent studying in France.
Lallybroch is far enough off the beaten path that it's mostly quiet, undisturbed -- and so when the dogs start barking to announce a visitor from their spot in the courtyard where they'd been sunning themselves, Jamie steps out from the door and down the stone steps to greet the newcomer. Please, he thinks to himself, let it not be the Watch... or the English...
"Hello there-- can I... help ye?"
a very open starter - for mutuals and non-mutuals, set in mid-1700s scotland during season one of outlander.
@leighiche asked: “Death greets us all - but not today.”
"Well aren't ye optimistic, Sassenach."
Jamie lets his lips curl in a smile, though it doesn't quite meet his eyes. He can feel Death reaching out to blanket the camp as the sky darkens, stretching icy fingers from just beyond the edge of the moor where the British lay encamped in a dense forest. It pools in his gut, and surely those of the highlanders in their own camp, setting nerves and tempers alight as they gather their wits about themselves, readying themselves to strike.
He supposes he should trust her -- she's from the future, after all, and she has been right so far about their battlefield successes. If tonight they'll emerge victorious, well. Perhaps they'll be one step closer to changing history.
The thought in itself is a daunting one, one that Jamie tries not to think too much about. He trusts his wife, with his life -- but at the same time, he knows what's at stake if they succeed... even more so if they fail.

a selection of lines from the various companions' banter quotes (not cut scene dialogues!) from baldur's gate 3. these are generally spoiler free and non context specific so they can apply to different settings and dynamics! feel free to change names and the like to customize the prompts.
“Death can't have me. Not yet…”
“Calm yourself. There is plenty of me to go around.”
“Realmspace is vast. Countless worlds to be mapped, kingdoms to be conquered.”
“I have missed this. The adventure. The danger. The kicking of butts!
“Let me guess - you need something.”
“Such attention.. I never realised I was so popular.”
“Let's cook with fire, baby.”
“Do you intend to vocalise every thought?. Or just the most obvious ones?”
“Wherever we go, ye gods let there be something green.”
“Careful, or I will take your toy away from you.”
“Watch your elders and learn.”
“Perhaps try attacking the enemy?”
“So much we don't know, lingering in the furthest reaches of existence.”
“All the world's my stage and you're just a player in it.”
“The shadows are my friend.”
“Yes, yes, have your fun. It isn't you they're trying to kill.”
“Feet planted firmly on Faerûn, please.”
“Admirable stamina, yet terrible priorities.”
“Well you certainly have the 'omnipresent' part down, don't you?”
“I am ready, whatever may come.”
“My faith protects me.”
“Need a throat slitting?”
“Death greets us all - but not today.”
“You need my expertise?”
“Can you feel death's cold grip?”
“So many stars, so many mysteries yet to be discovered.”
“Death comes quietly.”
“And I thought we were going to be friends.”
“Locked tight, but there must be some way to open it.”
“No, you can't die. Get up, damn you!
“You had my attention, now you have my fury.”
“From silence to suffering.”
“So many worlds out there. You'd need a thousand lifetimes to see them all - more.”
“I hope this is important. For your sake.”
“Let them gaze deep into their own abyss, and wonder just what it is they are trying to achieve.”
“I ought to just burn this whole thing down.”
“We have slightly more pressing matters to attend to.”
“You have still have time to surrender.”
“Every kicked buttock, another step on the path.”
“Weave save me. I can't take much more…
“You are right to fear me.”
“Let me look around. Might be something that'll help me crack this thing.”
“Incredible, to think how many worlds exist beyond this tiny speck within a speck I call home.”
“I really wish I could cast a Hold spell on you.”
“I can fawn over my face later.”
“Ready for another round?”
“Keep your blade close.”
“I can't unlock it from here, but there must be a switch or a button somewhere…”
“No, that's not moving. There must be a way to open it somewhere.”
“Battle favours the fearless.”
“Sleep with one eye open, evil. Maybe both.”
“Gotta be something around here to unlock this thing.”
“Why do beautiful people taste better?. It hardly seems fair on the ugly - they have such wonderful personalities.”
“Oh, calm down. I'm happy to see you too.”
“Just go for the Magic Missile and fire away. Never fails.”
“Still standing, no matter what you heard.”
“Enough waiting. I crave blood.”
“Hang on - I won't allow this. You aren't dead, go it?”
“GODS, it's HOT in here!”
“No rest for the wicked, I see.”
“Better to hide than fight, sometimes.”
“Would that I could hide from you, too.”
“Are you feeling lonely, perhaps?”
“There is no right or wrong, only truth.”
“Battle is afoot - you can poke me once we are safe.”
“What good all this ethereal eladrin blood if I can still get pimples?”
“I should've been a drow. They have such stylish armour.”
“I am armed! Armoured! And entirely sick of your foolishness.”
“Let's have some fun.”
“War is an old woman's game.”
“No rest, be you wicked or wise.”
“I'm getting too old for this nonsense.”
“I would poke you back, but I fear that's what you want.”
“You have my attention - now do something with it.”
“You are insistent, are you not?”
“Do what must be done.”
“Your suffering will be spectacular.”
“Lest I sit down for a rest and not rise again.”
“Better to look evil in the eye. Even if it be very small.”
“I'm not built to crouch.”
“I think I could go another round.”
“Always the same old song.”
“Is perfection too much to ask?”
“Eyes on victory, tummy on dinner.”
“So many places to be.. and I chose Baldur's Gate.”
“I'm not opening that. Not from here, at any rate.”
“What is the point, if not victory?”
“Won't last much longer like this.”
“Let's hope the locals are friendly.”
“Let us show them how it's done.”
“Weapons high. Standards higher.”
“Must everyone be so exhausting?”
“What I would not give for a chunk of fresh honeycomb…”
“Which way to the nearest library?”
“Now this is my happy place.”
“Who shall I silence?”
“Stop, or die.”
“Wear your scars proudly.”

OUTLANDER SENTENCE STARTERS
No, I said I won’t have you dying for nothing.
I won’t be. I’ll be dying with you.
Look, you told me that you could never get close to your mother, that she lived in another world. Well, maybe she’s trying to show you that world.
It’s not important if I believe it. She believes it. I’m just saying, we need to keep an open mind.
Only two people know what the truth really is, and one of them is dead. Too bad it wasn’t you.
Can I ask you something? How do you do it? Finally say goodbye to that one person you loved most in all the world?
Truth is, I’ve never been very good at saying goodbye.
But that’s the hell of it, isn’t it? Whether you want to say goodbye or not, they’re gone and you have to go on living without them. Because that’s what they would want.
Well then maybe we’ll all get to watch her slam her head into a five ton slab of granite.
May he have mercy on us all.
What kind of god creates a world where monsters thrive and beauty and purity is rewarded with poverty and death?
The same kind of god who also offers an opportunity for redemption.
I’ve been dying for years. It’s a wearisome process. I welcome its conclusion.
It’s like you read my mind.
I kept my word. I lay my vengeance at your feet.
I must say, this is a damned inconvenient time to be conciliatory.
Why did you pretend not to recognize me? I was afraid you would just blurt out my real name.
I know what you did. You championed me and exiled me both at the same time.
What am I to do with such a bloodthirsty barbarian?
Is your thirst for slaughter not quenched yet?
Surely there’s another woman you could have kiss you goodbye?
Fortune drops out of the sky and onto our doorstep. Convenient, is it not?
Why should we waste time with all this Shiite?
It’s been horrible. He forced me to mend his socks and to fetch his meals.
I think I know a wee bit more about this than you do.
So, will I be allowed to join you at dinner tonight?
They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
We may have to rethink our decision not to lie to one another.
And you, witch who sucks the cock of the devil. I’ll see you in hell.
You’re not what I ordered. But, you’ll do.
You should have trusted me with that knowledge from the beginning.
Every now and then it is OK for you to lie to me, you know, just to put my mind at ease.
Aye. I’ll remember that for the next time.
I’ve been thinking. Remember you said I owe you a life because you saved mine? Well, I saved yours as well at least as often. Seems to me we’re even.
Ashamed. Like I’m a different person now, and I’ll never be the same.
So you had to start yourself up with a whore before you could stand to be with me?
This is wonderful news. Why did you wait until now to tell me?
The way I see it, we’re doing a bad thing for a good reason.
Isn’t that what all bad people say?
Well, I am an unusual lady. At least I used to be.
Told you that dress would bring us grief.
How can you save a man that doesn’t want saving?
I lie here feeling I will die without your touch, but when we do touch, I want to vomit with shame.
If you take away the one last thing that makes sense to me, then I will die with you, right here now.
You think I cannot control the darkness I inhabit? One way or another, I will get a response from you.
Love forces a person to choose. You do things you never imagined you could do before.
Go get the shovel.
You might want to remember who has the pistol.
It looks like I’m going to a fucking barbecue.
I want you ____. I want you so much I can scarcely breathe. Will you have me?
You are my home now, ____.
It’s often something like this. But, no, this is unusual. It’s different.
Take off your shirt. I want to look at you.
I’ll never forget when I came out of the church and saw you for the first time, It was as if I stepped outside on a cloudy day and suddenly the sun came out.
Doesn’t it bother you that I’m not a virgin?
You control your nerves. Your nerves do not control you.
It doesn’t matter where you come from. You’re here.
Sometimes I wonder what I did to make the devil punish me like this.
