Hiatus extended

Mini Hiatus!

So tomorrow I'm going to NYC! I'm super excited, but I'm thinking I won't have a ton of time to be online. I'm going to try to draft everything tonight and work on as much as I can. Whatever I get done on here and on my Clint (xhawkass) will be queued to come out while I'm away. :D

Steve nodded. Talking to the people- yeah. That was a good idea. Just see where they were at supply-wise, get them on their way to the compound where the pregnant woman could get the proper care that she needed. It was good; at least they’d be able to help no matter how slight it might seem. Once he’d put the radio away, he slipped back into the house to grab his own gun, sliding the holster onto his belt at his hip. He tucked his knife sheath onto his belt next to it.

Then he headed back out to grab the second pack they kept ready. Steve poked through the bag then slid it onto his back. When James gestured for him to lead the way, Steve made his way down the ladder and out onto the street. His gaze flicked up and down, all around. This area was safe, of course; there were enough alarms to ensure that, but one couldn’t be too careful. Once James was at his side, he made his way through the streets toward the communications post the other man had set up.

As they neared the group, Steve slowed, eyes wide. One of the men was pale and practically swaying on his feet, bloodshot eyes obvious even from the distance. There was a pregnant woman, but she didn’t look much better than the man. “What’s– James?”

James shoved the ladder back up into the escape, the screech and moan of the metal making him write mentally to look for some kind of oil to make the transition smoother. Now that their world was so very quiet, it only made sense for the ladder to be as well. Taking a deep breath, James checked his weapons again as they began to walk towards the group.

He was wary and his senses sharpened as he realized how sickly the other people looked. “Steve, they’re infected.” James felt his stomach drop as soon as he said it. Lead was eating up his insides. They should’ve never left, goddamnit they must’ve just gotten a strand of the last airbourne virus. “Shit.”

Stepping forward and in front of Steve, he pulled his gun and held it at the ready at his side. “Don’t come any closer. You’re infected, don’t try to say you’re not. We’re going to give you some supplies, but you’re going to have to go.” The gun at his side said what he didn’t . The only other option was death by bullet. James felt cold even as he spoke, sealing off the part of him that had been awakened by Steve’s presence.

Bucky inhaled deeply the brisk morning air, right arm wrapped around his waist as though it could keep him from breaking apart. He looked across the Wakandan jungle, heartbeat still rattling around in his ribcage. Sleep had been hard, so this wasn’t the first sunrise he’d seen since they’d arrived, battered and battle broken.

If he closed his eyes he could still hear the sound of his left arm being torn from his body.

He shivered at the thought, glad he was alone on the balcony for the moment, bile rising up in his throat, but he swallowed back the memories and tried to focus on what the doctors had said. They’d promised a new arm and a cure for the trigger words. But so far all they’d come up with was an offer of putting him back in cryostasis and ridding the words that way.

Bucky knew that was what he should do, but the idea of sleeping another part of his life away made him ache. He was dangerous, a weapon of mass destruction, even without the metal arm. But he didn’t feel like that. Watching a brilliant scarlet bird fly across from one tree to another, Bucky longed to join it.

Hearing a knock on the door inside, he turned reluctantly away. “Come in.”
