Maysilee Donner, a friend of Katniss's mother, recently purchased a house on Moon Lake in Pennsylvania. The house is the former residence of a Prohibition-era gangster named Ripper Rafferty. Maysilee fled from the house in terror on the very night Katniss arrived for a visit. According to Maysilee, every night, a pack of ghost dogs with glowing eyes and mournful howls attacks her house. The dogs are believed to be the ghosts of Rafferty's four loyal Rottweilers. They allegedly vanished into the woods on the day of Rafferty's arrest and were never seen alive again. Katniss seeks out the truth of Ripper Rafferty's colorful history amid rumors of buried gold.

Katniss receives an invitation to the premiere of a world-class exhibition being prepared at the Beech Hill Museum in Washington, D.C., which is devoted to Mayan culture and will soon be exhibiting a newly discovered monolith to the public. However, shortly before the exhibition opens, one of the museum's most treasured pieces is stolen from the museum, and the thief leaves behind a mysterious red print of a Mockingjay. The surveillance system in the museum proves to be of no help as the footage around the time of the theft is corrupted. Katniss must find the stolen jade carving to save Beech Hill from financial ruin and figure out if the Mockingjay print was a message for her, or for the Capitol.

Katniss and her friend Cressida are at the Gamemakers Royale Theater in St Louis for the premiere of a new movie. Cressida is set to interview the film’s star for her job at Channel 13, but as Cressida goes into the star’s dressing room, she is kidnapped. With the theater on lockdown, Katniss has to race against time to find Cressida and the kidnapper before the angry crowd of protestors succeeds in getting the building demolished.

While on vacation, Katniss is snowed in at a Romanesque Hospitium in the mountains. Not long after her arrival, the villa’s historic library is vandalized, and another guest causes a commotion over her room having been robbed. The villa was originally owned by the founder of The Capitol, who had the Villa of the Papyri library in Italy taken apart and rebuilt into the hospitium after the Mockingjay Tragedy, though the why was never learned. As Katniss investigates the vandalism of the library, she begins to suspect that something in the library has been taken, and the vandalism was used as a cover-up.

Katniss goes to San Francisco to help a friend of her housekeeper's who is renovating an old mansion into a historical museum. The mansion is believed to be haunted, and as the incidents and unexplainable occurrences pile up, leading to a mysterious threatening letter and a fire, Katniss learns that there is something someone doesn’t want her to uncover.

Invited by a famous tenant of her aunt Merrilee to stay with her in New York, Katniss learns that another famous soap opera star is receiving death threats, and they are escalating. As Katniss becomes familiar with the world behind the cameras, she discovers that it would be easier to count how many people don’t want to kill the man.

When a student at the high school where Katniss’s Aunt Merrilee works dies, her aunt asks her to help. Katniss agrees, only to soon discover that the student did not die accidentally. He was murdered. Posing as a student at the school, Katniss begins investigating, learning that the murdered student had been blackmailing a handful of other students and a drug dealer with video footage of something each person wanted to keep a secret.
