This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
it would suck being a new immortal. like it’d be 2109 and people would go, “what was it like seeing ancient civilizations rise and fall like that? seeing the pyramids being built? watching the expansion and growth of the new world?” and i’d just be like, “no…no i was born in 1991. so like, wow i’m gonna see some cool stuff, but, i mean i’m not that much older than just a really, really old person, you know? phones were big back then. so big. but only for like ten years, then they got like, as good as they are now. uh. rhinos existed. don’t think i ever saw one in person. cool, good talk.”
even worse, imagine being an immortal who keeps missing stuff. “What was it like seeing the pyramids being built?” “Fuck if I know, I was in Madagascar.” “Oh, okay. Well, how was the Renaissance?” “I fell down a hole in Scotland and people thought I was an enchanted well for four hundred years, it was over by the time I convinced someone to get me out.”
And now, a lesson in biases:
We barely know anything about Madagascar pre-500CE. We don’t even know whether the island had a permanent population before then, despite finding a bunch of much older signs of temporary human presence.
Malagasy mythology makes mention of the vazimba, a “precursor” ethnic group that might or might not be distinct from Madagascar’s current population.
The point is, we do not know.
So you were in Madagascar when the pyramids were being built in Egypt, i.e. during one of the most obscure, most undocumented parts of Madagascar’s human history?
Oh, buddy, you better go and make a bunch of anthropologists and archeologists really happy RIGHT NOW instead of feeling bad about missing everyone else’s pet Major Event.
It’s been a decade since we left that comment and you have the best reply anyone’s left to it.
"You'll be left behind if you don't get onboard with AI!" okay let's assume for a second that AI is The Future or whatever. Let's assume that it will be the cornerstone of all future work. Let's assume that, like the investment guys floating on the surface of the bubble are desperate to have us believe, It Is Inevitable. Frankly I still don't think I'd lose much by ignoring it until that day comes. Like I simply do not believe that prompt engineering could take all that long to learn. Call me naive but I think that if AI became critical for my life tomorrow, somebody telling me how to access chatGPT (I imagine they've got a website or an app or something?) and being like "Remember how you used to use google when it still actually worked? Start there" would be enough. I think I could figure it out in like an hour, tops, by fucking around with the site and maybe looking up some tips on reddit. So like. Even if "AI is the future" did somehow magically turn out to be true, I don't see how that affects me at all right now or why anybody bothers saying so. "AI is the future, if you were smart you'd be using it!" no I wouldn't. It still wouldn't be a skill that's worth my time to learn yet. Pointless addition to the discussion. Maybe I'm dunning-krugered or something but I simply do not think that it would be difficult enough that I would need to start practicing right now or I'm missing out on something.
"You'll need AI in a decade so you should get familiar with it now!" I think if you start getting familiar with it now, and I start getting familiar with it in a decade, we're going to end up at the same proficiency pretty quickly. Doesn't seem like the kind of skill where "X years of experience" is relevant. I don't think that's a skill gap that would be hard to close.

When my cousin's then-boyfriend texted her that he would be coming home late because he would be stopping by the department store on his way home from work, she, knowing full well that he hates going there, never buys clothes there if he can help it, and generally asks to stay home whenever she goes, knew instantly that he could only be going for one reason: To buy an engagement ring.
Practical-minded, she responded: Don't forget the coupon we got in the mail, there's a discount on rings. Ever helpful, she sent him a photo of the coupon code.
He left her on read. When he came home, he was cagey and grumbling, and when she was like "Did you remember to use the coupon" he was like, "I don't know what you're talking about, why would I be buying jewelry, etc.," not meeting her eye.
Few weeks later he took her out to dinner at a fancy restaurant, spent the entire night grumbling under his breath and shaking his head in disbelief, before going "아이씨" and pulling the ring box out of his pocket and slamming it down on the table. "How the hell did you know," he said, begrudgingly impressed.
She was like, "It's really not hard" and then was like "Did you use the coupon" and he was like "Yes I used the coupon"
And to me, this is romance
This is atmospheric lighting. Studying how the sun (warm light) or the moon (cold light) will affect your environment and how the bounce lighting (grass, sky, nearby street, cars, etc.) reflects will inform the color palette you go for your final result. There are easier ways to do this with modern technology, using color overlays and color balance adjustments in programs that have them, but learning how your warm light source vs. cold light source vs. warm bounce vs cold bounce creates color will inform the overlay colors you use when doing this the easy digital way. You can train your eyes to see "true" color. Like, looking at the objects on my desk, I know "my glasses holder is black. my monitoor is black. my desk is brown. my keyboard is green" but because I can see their true colors, because i'm really looking at what colors are there
"black" glasses holder: a deep blue (shadows of my desk) with bounces of deep browns and red (bounce light from the lit area of my desk). highlight flecks of orange (my overhead light) and rim lighting of green (green decorative lamp on my desk) and purple (my grow lights)
"black" monitor: same base colors as the glasses holder, but there's all sorts of little flecks of bounce lighting on the rim from what'[s on my screen. It's also a much more reflective surface, so those greens and golds are much brighter than my glasses holder. It's also slightly reflecting *me*, so now we add in some bits of a peachy orange wher my arm is showing on the faint reflection "brown" desk: this joker has all sorts of colors in it, everything i'v elisted above, but now there's a soft cream from the skulls on my desk, the xbox behind my monitor, the "brown" is more a mix of navy blue grain and several shades of brown, purple, red, a bit of muave where the light is hitting it just right my "green" keyboard: it's a sort of soft gradient from blue to cream to mint. blue in shadow, cream in transition and finally mint where it's being lit by its cool (so blueish) lit LED key lights. all the shadows on it are a range of blue to purple. the normally "white" keys are a gradient of heather to cream to light green. seeing colors truly lets you look at characters and scenes lit by atmosphere and stop thinking "Pearl from Steven Universe is Cream/Oranges/Teal!" but to understand that, in a moonlit setting, Pearl would be cooler skewed Lavender, pale pink, blue and pale yellow. divorce what you know the color palette to be logically in order to see it for what it truly is in its environment. (this is also why color picking yields wildly different results depending on the lighting of the scene, time of day, etc. and why character designs often have a default base color palette that is them in flat lighting so that the color designer can then adjust their colors to be what they need to be in the required settings of the show scenes)
great job everyone lets hit the showers
Not again
gentle reminder that you can’t get this kind of nonsense from any other site
This thread is almost eight years old and it has damn well earned its place among the Tumblr pantheon as a Heritage Post™️
frieren is about discovering what makes life worth living after you lost someone before you realized how you felt about them. dunmeshi is about how we are all animals in the end, and confronting the monstrous reality of consumption, in all its forms. witch hat is about how the technology that makes our society function could be used to make people’s lives better, but especially disabled people are left out, and those in power choose very specifically who actually benefits. how fitting that three of the most popular and poignant fantasy stories of the 2010s-2020s are about grief, consumption, and power.

We salute an absolute icon 🫡
this blog supports punching fascists
[contains quote post or other embedded content]
This is so important though: "You're gonna get in trouble for that" reveals so much. He was planning on nobody doing anything, not because nobody stands up to him, or nobody objecting to what he says. He expects good people to be goody-two-shoes rules followers, and he expects the rules to protect him no matter what he does.
Important lesson to learn from this standing up to fascists means getting into good trouble. Get into trouble if it's worth it. Fascists will never expect it.

A conversation I don’t think yall are ready for yet is that you can love a character sooooo much and relate to them and see yourself in them but at the end of the day they’re still fake and that’s why someone else’s take on them or headcanon about them isn’t a direct message about you or insult to your identity. If your identity is so wrapped up in a character that you can’t distinguish between reality and fiction, then you are the problem. Not some random person online who interprets the character differently than you.
this also goes for when you hate a character soooooo much and relate them to every person who hurt you and see everyone you hate in them, at the end of the day they're still fake and someone else's love for them is not a commentary on your trauma
#i also think we should not be using 'i relate to the character' as a claim to authority on the character #just because you relate does not mean your interpretations are law for the rest of us or even correct or 'more accurate' than anyone else's #it just means you relate full stop lmao.
