- Stella James is technically her first name, but she only really gets called it when she's in trouble. TW: ableism, bullying - It was at some point in kindergarten that Stella decided her and school didn’t mesh well. She wanted to like school, it just felt like school didn’t want to like her back. Math was boring, trying to sit still took up most of her attention, and the words she was supposed to read always seemed to be scrambling and floating off of the page. In the less than stellar 90s Special Education system, it took a long time for anyone to pick up on the fact that she wasn’t struggling out of laziness or a lack of trying. The specialists and ADHD medication helped her academics, but they sure didn’t make things any easier socially. Bullies pounced on the few extra seconds she needed to process things, ignorant adults dramatically slowed down their speech when she needed clarification, and if she had a nickel for every time someone called her “special Stella” she’d have enough money to drive away the Richies. It was all endlessly frustrating, but much easier to swallow with her Walkman to drown it out. And when that didn't do the trick? Her fists turned out to be great backup. End TW - Stella knows that she’s funny (and not in the sense that she’s trying to run a stand up routine). She has a tendency to over exaggerate — she’s always a touch too loud, mouth running a mile a minute, bouncing on the balls of her feet. It is funny, as long as she’s in on the joke, as long as no one is mistaking her silliness for stupidity. She might not have her nose buried in a text book or some fancy degree, but she’s smart, she’s talented, she’s capable. There aren’t a lot of ways to get on her bad side, but treating her like she’s incompetent will earn you a one way ticket. - Is almost always found with her music journal in her back pocket and a pen shoved somewhere on her person — behind her ear, caught in her long hair, held between her lips when she needs her hands for something else. She has more than a few items of clothing stained from accidentally leaving a pen in the pocket of her jeans when she threw them in the wash. In the rare instances that she doesn’t have her journal close by, nothing is safe from being covered in scratchy handwritten lyrics. It might have been her (read: definitely was her) that jotted something down on the counter in a moment of desperation. To be fair, she’d never thought permanent ink actually meant permanent on anything but paper! Weren’t you supposed to be able to scrub it out? The tape recorder that lives in the bottom of her tote bag has seen better days, but it still works well enough to document the humming and scattered thoughts that don’t make much sense to anyone else. - Thrift shopping is her love language and if you need what you bought tailored? Baby, take her to city hall! Her guitar might be her first born, but her sewing machine gets called her baby just as much and she could never pick a favorite child. Though, if someone made her she’d always pick the music over the fashion, no one tell Bobby! (The aforementioned machine had been named that ironically, considering she was always wrestling with the bobbin.) She’s messy in almost everything she does, the process of sewing is no different, but just like her music you would never be able to guess it from the product.
