my issue with the portrayal of katniss in the films is that they skimp out on prim’s importance throughout their decisions. while film katniss seems to be wholly indifferent towards the capitol throughout the first two movies, and only grasps the inhumane tactics used by the government AFTER witnessing the uprisings during the victory tour and the bombings in district 8, book katniss has a very different perspective; experiencing a lifetime of poverty and seeing how starvation affects the poor and largely children, katniss is already aware of the immoral habits of the capitol, especially surrounding the games. they already have an acute understanding of what’s going on in the districts, so while the victory tour and the uprisings are absolutely traumatizing to witness upfront, they aren’t unexpected.

the glaring difference between the adaptations is that katniss’ selfishness is not out of obliviousness, it’s out of love. before the reaping, their entire monologue revolves around the unfairness of the games and their district reflects that when they salute them in silence after they’ve volunteered. they aren’t indifferent towards the capitol before the games, they’re fucking furious and that manifests itself in the decision to show dissent after rue dies, to only side with peeta when it’s convenient, to disavow the games by attempting suicide; it’s all that pent up anger that ultimately gets them home, but it’s at the expense of starting the rebellion, and in turn, indebts them to snow to try and stifle it.

SHE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A MONSTER,   but  the  deadliest  things  never  do.   the  glint  of  her  red  hair  against  her  gay  green  eyes  reminds  me  of  the  bright-bellied  snakes  lurking  beneath  the  forest  swards;   for  every  pretty  scale  on  their  back,   there  was  an  ounce  more  venom  to  put  you  on  yours.   ---   the  mention  of  prim  piques  my  interest   &   i  think  she  means  it  to.   kim  rye  told  me  New  Eden’s  sister  has  “eyes,”   that  their  Mother  is  a  Red  God,   that  this  Archangel  can  see  everything   .   .   .   i  suppose  they’ve  seen  prim  too,   or  she  wouldn’t  think  it  significant  enough  to  mention.   but  it  is.   &   now  i’m  interested.   even  if  i  shouldn’t  be.   there’s  a  lot  of  things  i  shouldn’t  do,   but  i’d  do  any  of  them  for  her.

❛   WHAT’S THE CATCH?   ❜     my  father  taught  me  enough  to  know  people  like  this  don’t  offer  anything  out  of  the  goodness  of  their  hearts.   especially  not  in  a  world  like  this.      ❛   Eden’s  Gate  was  causing  all  the  trouble  around  here  before  the  bombs  even  dropped.   giving  yourselves  a  new  name  doesn’t  necessarily  mean  you’ve  got  new  morals.   ❜     i  dig  the  heel  of  my  boot  into  the  coarse  earth  as  i  ponder  the  options.   they’ve  got  a  school,   with  children  prim’s  age.   a  place  to  learn  medicine  from  the  earth,   like  my  father  taught  me,   with  the  stock  to  actually  understand  it;   a  community  for  prim  to  grow  up  in.   it’s  safer   &   surer  than  prosperity,   or  anywhere  else  we’ve  been.   the  highwaymen  left  them  alone  for  a  reason.   BUT EVEN A BED OF SNAKES IS SOFTER TO SLEEP IN THAN NOTHING AT ALL       ❛   ---   i  don’t  want  your  diplomatic  bullshit.   i  need  more  than  empty  words.   for  prim,   i  need  assurance.   i  need  action.   ❜
