Jinhyuk isnât sure how he ended up on the ground in an alleyway. Sometimes, he just set himself up for failure. Animal shelters were dangerous places for him; they were too often filled with hopeful vibes, hopeful but with an overwhelming sadness.Â
But he often forgot, heading in that direction unconsciously, drawn to the voices. He recoiled the moment he walked by the storefront, as the long-time residents of the shelter recognized him and their voices drowned out his other senses.Â
Itâs Jinhyuk!
Jinhyuk! Did you bring a friend?
Come in and say hi!!
Maybe if I look really happy, someone will come for me today.
Whereâs Gina? Sheâs came in to see me just last week...
Hungry.
Please take me home.
Jinhyuk!
Please.
It was a myriad of excitement and hope and desperation, and Jinhyuk couldnât take all of the commotion inside his head. He tried to block out the voices, but they kept clambering over one another, pushing against his head until it felt as though his brain was about to explode.Â
He stumbled along, eyes not focusing on anything, and somehow made it far enough into a side street to collapse onto all fours. His arms were wobbly where they held him up and he tasted bile in the back of his throat.Â
Coughing loudly, he squeezed his eyes shut to stop the world from spinning around him, muttering a slew of curses into the ground.Â

@odjinhyukââ
Saturday early afternoon and the cafe is a chaotic gathering of eclectic characters, human and otherwise. Not even halfway to the counter and heâs nearly stepped on the tails of no less than three cats, almost been bowled over by an extremely enthusiastic Labrador missing its owner, and had to duck out of the way of what might be a parakeet disappearing with the corner of someoneâs croissant.
All in all, rather the norm for a weekend at this fine establishment.
Order finally placed, he winds his way over to the booth where a familiar mop of black hair peeks out from between a potted plant and a truly amazingly plush tabby. Thereâs a strange ease to being around Jinhyuk that heâs come to appreciate, a reprieve in how quiet the other man is compared to the white noise of his every day backdrop.
âDonât look now, but I think that Samoyed is making eyes at you.â
Thereâs laughter coloring his words as he slides into the seat opposite Jinhyuk. This kind of casual mischief is still something that sits strange on his tongue, normalcy never a concept heâd had a chance to settle into even before his days as a government dog. He hasnât decided yet if he likes the role he plays in this new stage, but for now, heâll go along with the easy pacing of civilian life for however long the trial period runs.
âOr maybe your sandwich, canât really tell. The girl with it is definitely eyeing you though.â
His coffee arrives with a generous piling of foam for topping, shaped into the head and front paws of a cat peering over the mug rim. He sighs.
âWell now I feel bad about drinking my latte itâs so cuteâŚah well. So, how are you? Been a while since I came by, hear any interesting gossip lately from the little critters?â
All he had wanted was a quieter day at work. Jinhyuk sighs as he fixed the tabby in front of him with a stern glare. He had gotten maybe an hour of sleep, and had just washed down two painkillers with his morning tea before heading into work, where he was promptly smothered with the aforementioned tabby, her owner pleading for him to help cut her nails.Â
âItâll take me less than a minute,â he mutters at the feline. One of the upsides to working at a pet friendly cafe was that nobody really questioned why he was talking to the animals. Most found it more endearing than odd.Â
I donât like the way it feels!! Sheâs indignant, trying to squirm her way out of his grasp.Â
âYeah, well Iâm sure Rachel doesnât like the way you scratch up her carpet and furniture either. Besides, itâs just nail clipping. Youâve had it done hundreds of times, and youâll have it done a hundred more. Now be like this stuffed animal,â he gestures to the inanimate kitten next to the window, âand hold still.â The last bit comes through as more of a demand, and Jinhyuk can feel the pressure behind his eyes as his pupils flattened to that of the tabbyâs. She stops moving immediately, and he gets to work quickly.Â
True to his word, a minute later, heâs depositing the nail clippings into the garbage can beneath the booth. Free, the tabby immediately jumps off, kicking her hind legs backwards at him as she struts off. He rubs at his eyes, feeling the pressure lift a bit as his pupils round back out, and takes a sip of his coffee before someoneâs sliding into the booth with him.Â
He grins at the familiar face, âHow can you be sure sheâs not also eyeing the sandwich? Maybe we just make some killer sandwiches.â Itâs not too often that he gets friends coming into the store, and he gives his coworker an amicable smile when the latte arrives.Â
Jinhyuk shrugs, âMâalright, same old same old.â The headache is starting to abate, and thank god the chichuahua had stopped being so fascinated with the husky across the street.Â
âApparently thereâs talk that the new liver pâtĂŠ they just stocked at the pet store is to die for.â His head jerks as the husky outside started hyperfixating on a scent trail, but his gaze doesnât waver from the fixed spot of his friendâs latte cup. âAnd the sparrows are trying to figure out how to rescue their territory back from the pigeons.â He streches a bit before taking another sip of his coffee, âHowâve you been?âÂ
Empty Homes
@odsorenâ
Food.Â
The thought bounced around inside his skull before Jinhyuk turned his head to see a white pomeranian sit up from itâs spot tied to a bike post, her tail starting to pick up speed as she zeroed in on the smell eminating from his backpack. As he walked closer, the pomeranian jumped up onto her hind legs, tugging at the rope.Â
The thought had evolved into a loud chorus in his head echoing until Jinhyuk blinked a few times, hard enough to send colour popping behind his eyelids.Â
HEY ENOUGH.Â
The loudness abated, but the voice persists, albeit much less demanding and a little more whiny. He kept walking, tapping the pad of his right thumb to his pointer finger repeatedly in his pocket. Maryâs literally inside there, buying you jerky. Calm down.
Before he can hear the canineâs response, he switches to tapping against his fourth finger, tuning into the much calmer mind of a white rat napping in his left coat pocket. It was humming a weird tune, but it was better than the yipping of the pomeranian.Â
He had ventured out of his apartment with a bag of assorted candies and a large ziplocked bag of raw meat. Perhaps he would use two ziplock bags next time to further mask the smell, although he doubted that it would make much of a difference.Â
The whole journey took him just over an hour, him having to stop along the way to feed a few mountain lions, a vulture, and a few leopard cats. He also managed to lob two larger steaks up into the cave where he knew an asiatic black bear lived. Jinhyuk had affectionately called the bear Rufus, but wasnât quite comfortable enough yet to chance hand-feeding.Â
By the time he had made his way over to the dark abandoned mansion, he had ammassed quite a few creature, ranging in size from the rat still curled up in his coat, to a lynx and a tibetian wolf padding along just behind him. He didnât mind a larger crowd with wilder animals; they didnât tend to babble as much as domestic animals, and were generally less curious beings.Â
Approaching the large building, Jinhyuk let himself in with a light push on the old oak door, grimacing as the hinge creaked in protest. One of these days, that hinge would just give up and there would be no more door. There was a buzz in his head, a slight edge that he could sense off of the wolf who nudged at the back of his thigh before trotting off into another room. He called her Brin, off of her brindle coat, and her senses were arguably sharpest out of all of the animals who had decidedly to join him. She wasnât too concerned though, having smelled that particular odd scent a few times now. From her thoughts alone, Jinhyuk could almost taste the metallic scent on his tongue.Â
âHappy Friday,â he called out in the open space, as the animals around him dispersed momentarily for their initial exploration of new smells in the house. Jack roused from within his pocket and clamboured out onto his shoulder, sniffing around, but that was about it.Â
