As an eldest daughter there’s something so refreshing about Dick working through his familial trauma as well as all his other problems so here are some of my fav fics I’ve compiled over the past like week LMAO

- absolutely loved this one shot,,, dick is always doing his best to play mediator because he’s known bruce the longest and understands his motives the most but playing mediator and understanding both sides is an exhausting task so i love the fact the author explored that here

This one is less eldest daughter syndrome and moreso exploring dick’s trauma after the catalina incident but if clark showed up right after. i think what i enjoyed most abt this fic was the vulnerability and numbness after the incident,,, def resonated with it to a degree and i liked dick and jason’s interactions, they felt realistic.

- omg omg this author. This author. Phenomenal. I heavily encourage yall to read more of their stuff if you like this oneshot because all of their stuff is good. But this fic specifically was just so so so so good. I felt dick’s emotions and stress in this one,,,when you force yourself to carry the weight of your entire family’s emotional wellbeing—including your own—onto yourself, it weighs on you. So much so that its not unrealistic to go nonverbal. I just resonated a lot with this story and found that dick’s stress was extremely well written. Def one of my favs

- this one. This is the favorite. It’s kind of lengthy but it’s so so so worth it. The spiraling (pun unintended) of dick’s mental wellbeing is written beautifully. Not to mention the core of the entire fic is dick wanting to get himself help, something that i think is incredibly important when writing abt mental health. Outside influences can only do so much and i found it really beautiful when dick finally found it in himself to stay just that much longer to check on damian. Also speaking of, the dick and damian parent/child relationship in this is just so so so good it hurts. fell in love with their dynamic in this one, especially with dick’s obsession with not letting damian carry all the weight of dick’s stress on his shoulders. That is peak eldest daughter syndrome and it was written phenomenally. Pls read this

Zuko didn't call her 'Mom' often. But now he didn't know if he'd ever have another chance to.

I started doing it when after brain surgery my husband had trouble forming responses to questions for a while, and realized that the habit was helping my students engage more truthfully with me.

Some examples:

Yes/No: “Did you clean up your room like I told you?”

This/That: “Did you clean up already, or do you still need to do that?”

Yes/No: “Are you going to sit quietly?”

This/That: “Are you ready to sit and do our quiet activity, or do you need some time by yourself first?”

Yes/No: “Are you doing anything fun for your birthday?”

This/That: “Are you having a party on your birthday, or are you going to relax?”

I think many children (and adults!) are averse to telling adults “No,” especially when a command is implied. (“Did you clean your room?” “Are you going to sit quietly?” Hmmm if I say ‘no’ I will be in trouble with the adult.) So they are actually pretty likely to just lie and say what they think you want to hear.

The figure moves quickly, but Peter’s faster. He’s still adjusting to the sudden brightness, so dark red is really the only thing he takes from this initial encounter, but it’s enough.

The 6 Times Peter Wanted To Reveal his Identity (And the 1 Time He Did) by Spongeekat (28k)

Anyways, I live in the area and saw you standing on the ledge, and I thought I could maybe talk you down. Dying hurts, in case you were wondering. It’s not worth it.” Dying...hurts? Talk him down? Bad decision?

Oh.

“Oh.” Everything suddenly connected and the gears started turning in Peter’s brain. “No, wait, I wasn’t…” He didn’t quite know how to explain he wasn’t there to do that without completely explaining why he was up there in the first place. Any resolve he may have had earlier about revealing his superpowered persona had melted away, his plans going awry within seconds. "

Or Peter is madly in love with Wade, and plans to meet him on top of his apartment building to reveal his identity. Wade thinks Peter is standing on the ledge ready to jump, and takes it upon himself to make sure he gets home safe and finds a reason to live again.

My Boyfriend's a Murder Bot by Fredegund (55k)

Wade Winston Wilson is ugly. His skin's inside out. It ripples and moves every second of every day, at constant war with the cancer. Vanessa put on a brave face for him when she first saw the changes, but it turns out even she can't stomach the sight for long. He's ugly and alone and nothing will ever be good in life again -

If only that were his only problem.

But Weapon X is at it again, under crisp new management, turning orphans into super slaves and bringing out the big guns to make sure nobody interferes this go around (namely one Pool comma Dead). So now, not only is Wade alone and ugly forever, but he's got a bit of a pest problem in the form of a black-clad murder-happy man spider with a collar around his neck and an unhealthy obsession with tying Deadpool up.

So maybe it's not all bad...

Paradise (spread out with a butter knife) by Sarah_Sandwich (72k)

He sighs from where he’s prone, arms akimbo, and roof gravel digging into his spine. “I lost my job. My… other job. The one that actually pays the bills.”

He doesn’t want to dwell on why he’s telling Deadpool of all people. Surely it has nothing to do with his desperate lack of friends. MJ is in California chasing her dreams, Harry’s undergoing treatment for his mental health and isn’t allowed visitors (not that it matters since they blacklisted Peter after last time), and Gwen… Well.

And it’s not like he can talk to Aunt May without her worrying about him starving to death under a bridge or something so… Deadpool it is. Man, when did his life get this pathetic?

OR: The one where Peter and Wade are literal soulmates but don't realize it for literal years because they're literal idiots.

Wherein Deadpool is reluctantly hired to protect Peter Parker from an organization out to hunt him, with varying success on both ends and quite a lot of feelings, revelations, and identity crises.

If you’ve read the amazing Salvage by MuffinLance or the equally fabulous The Art of Burning by hella1975, PLEASE go read Ozymandias, King of Kings by Think_of_a_Wonderful_Thought.

Basically, it’s an incredible AU carefully built on a twist: instead of being sent to hunt down the Avatar after his Agni Kai, Zuko went in a prison camp to die digging for coal. Three years later, Zuko is still alive but traumatized and resigned to his fate; one day, however, the prison gets attacked.

There’s a million reasons I couldn’t recommend it more, but here’s a few of them:

This AU features an alternate version of canon!Zuko, with even more trauma and angst, but he’s exceptionally well portrayed. Honestly, I got as attached to this version of Zuko as I am with the show’s version. This Zuko is more wary, ready to do anything in order to survive, and I cannot describe how enjoyable it is to follow his character development.

The main pairing is Zukka, and once again, it is amazingly written. We get to see them act as teenagers and try to build an awkward, but incredibly sweet relationship, despite the context of the war and the misunderstandings between the two.

Unlike in the show, the matter of the war is treated with more crudeness and a realistic perspective. There is violence, there is moral conflict, there are well-loved characters who struggle to do the right thing (looking at you Hakoda) and it is an absolute delight to read.

The relationship between Hakoda and Zuko is a tortuous one, especially because of Hakoda’s behavior and Zuko being an unreliable narrator. I am a lover of the trope featuring Hakoda adopting Zuko (I found this fic while specifically searching for this trope) and, reading Ozymandias, I can say the experience is as fascinating as it is painful. I cannot wait to see how their relationship will evolve. It is my favorite part of the fic and the primary reason I would recommend it to all lovers of Dadkoda. The author chose a particular take on Hakoda’s character, but if you want to know more, you’ll have to go check this wonderful piece of writing!

You know what I love about The Count of Monte Cristo? How everyone gets exactly what they want. It’s like in any movie where someone gets 3 wishes, but everything goes wrong because they aren’t specific enough. Let me explain:

Danglars did what he did for the money and the position/title. Monte Cristo comes along and says “ya like money? Ya like titles? Well here’s a rich Italian prince. Now ya have exactly what you want.” 

Mondego was after Mercedes, and decided that framing an innocent man for a crime would be the best way to achieve his goal. So Monte Cristo comes and says “Hey, I know you like pretty women. Well here’s the prettiest woman I know.” and introduces him to Haydée. 

Villefort probably justifies what he did by telling himself that he wasn’t selfish, he was just protecting his career, but more importantly, his family. Monte Cristo arrives and says “It’s ok, I understand your motives. Since you love your family so much, I’ve brought along a family member of yours” and gives him Benedetto.
