Babies born with such disorder may lead to serious health issues such as heart and liver disease, respiratory problems, blindness and muscular dystrophy.

The IVF technique allows transfer of genetic material from mother’s egg to donor embryo with its nuclear DNA removed. The technique is aimed to benefit around 150 couples each year. However, the regulation is receiving various contradictions, due to the ethical issues associated with this technique.  

The new embryo will contain nuclear DNA from father mother, and a small amount of healthy DNA from donor as well. Spite of these contradictions, the regulation is passed as it serves as a boon for couples with incurable mitochondrial disorders. Moreover, the DNA transfer from donor is in very less amount, thus least likely to affect the appearance, personality and features of the child.
