The Grocery Store Collision
Part 13 — Officially Dad
A few months had passed since the wedding.
Life had settled into a happy routine.
You were married to Dylan.
Bailey was seven and completely convinced that she had the best parents in the world.
But Dylan had been thinking about something for a long time.
Something he hadn’t told either of you about.
He wanted to officially adopt Bailey.
Not because he wanted to replace her biological father.
But because he wanted to make the promise he’d already made to her official.
⸻
The Surprise
One Saturday morning, Dylan walked into the kitchen carrying two envelopes.
You looked at him.
“What are those?”
He smiled.
“You’ll see.”
Bailey was sitting at the table eating breakfast.
“Daddy, what’s that?”
Dylan smiled.
“Something important.”
You raised an eyebrow.
“Dylan…”
He laughed.
“Just trust me.”
He walked over and sat beside Bailey.
“Okay, kiddo.”
Bailey looked at him.
“What’s going on?”
Dylan took a breath.
“You know how you call me Dad?”
Bailey nodded.
“Yeah.”
“And you know how I’ve told you that I’ll always be here for you?”
“Yeah.”
Dylan smiled.
“I wanted to make that official.”
Bailey looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
Dylan opened the first envelope.
Inside was a document.
“I asked to adopt you.”
Bailey’s eyes widened.
“You want to adopt me?”
Dylan nodded.
“If you’ll let me.”
Bailey immediately jumped into his arms.
“Yes!”
Dylan laughed as he hugged her tightly.
“Really?”
“Yes!”
She squeezed him.
“You’re already my dad!”
Dylan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
He kissed the top of her head.
“But now it’ll be official.”
⸻
Y/N’s Surprise
You had been standing there quietly, tears streaming down your face.
Dylan looked at you.
“There’s something for you too.”
He handed you the second envelope.
You opened it.
Inside was a copy of the adoption paperwork.
You looked at him.
“You did this?”
He nodded.
“I’ve been working on it for a while.”
You started crying.
“Dylan…”
He stood and walked over to you.
“I wanted you to know that I don’t just love you.”
He looked toward Bailey.
“I love her.”
You wrapped your arms around him.
“I know.”
He held you tightly.
“And I wanted to make sure she always knows that I’m her dad.”
⸻
Bailey’s Question
Bailey came over and hugged both of you.
“Does this mean I’m really your daughter?”
Dylan crouched down.
“You’ve always been my daughter.”
She smiled.
“But now it’s official?”
He nodded.
“Now it’s official.”
Bailey hugged him again.
“I love you, Daddy.”
Dylan closed his eyes for a moment.
“I love you too.”
You knelt beside them.
Bailey wrapped her arms around both of you.
“Our family is official!”
You laughed through your tears.
“It always was.”

A Special Promise
That evening, Dylan tucked Bailey into bed.
She looked up at him.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you going to be my dad forever?”
Dylan smiled.
“Forever.”
“Even when I’m grown up?”
“Especially then.”
Bailey smiled.
“Even when I get married?”
Dylan pretended to look shocked.
“Let’s not talk about that yet.”
She giggled.
“Okay.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Goodnight, sweetheart.”
“Goodnight, Daddy.”
Dylan turned off the light.
Before leaving, he looked back at her.
For years, he’d loved Bailey as if she were his own.
Now, he had officially become her father.
But the paperwork hadn’t changed how much he loved her.
It had only put into words what their hearts already knew.
Dylan was Bailey’s dad.
And Bailey was his daughter.
Forever.
