hi everyone and apologies for the radio silence! you’re very much owed a progress update. 2.3. is essentially done - i’ve just been held up as I wanted to recruit a sensitivity consultant, but you’ll be glad to know I’ve now contacted a consultant and should be hearing from them in the next few weeks. i’ll be implementing their comments on 2.3. as required, but then it should be published shortly and we can get underway with the rest of the volume!

Was Felix bisexual or gay? Did he have any idea of his sexuality before meeting Ambrose, or was Ambrose his bi/gay awakening (if you choose for them to have a romantic relationship)?
Good question! Of the two, Felix certainly starts off being the more open-minded to different ways of life beyond their respective class constraints, so I'm inclined to say he was already interested in experimenting with his sexuality before he met Ambrose. As to whether he's gay or bi - idk man, those labels didn't exist in the time, and compulsory heterosexuality was so much more intensive than it is today - there was only really a meaningful distinction between men who loved men and men who didn't. I think I picture him as also having had relationships with women, though!
Hi, I've really enjoyed reading and playing oblivious melodies these past 2 days after sort of stumbling across the game! The atmosphere is written very well and I can tell you have a great depth of knowledge about the period/culture it's based on, even though I don't myself. One thing I'm curious about though is how to get the different options for handling (for lack of a better word) Mariah in chapter 1. I've went back and forth with various personalities for artemisia chosen at the start, but I haven't seen anything other than physically restraining, telling her to be quiet, and calling for help. I'm unsure how other choices in the chapter can affect this and I hope you'd be willing to give some insight on this.

It's been a while since I revisited this chapter so I'm just having a look at the code to remind myself what the relevant variables are! Haha. it seems there might actually be a bug here and other options were meant to be available, specifically ones based on Artemisia having a learning or society-oriented way of looking at the world! I'm not sure if you're playing on the standalone version of the chapter or the full volume version, but I'll take a look at both and see if I can get those working! i think there was also a continuity error present in the full volume version, so I've fixed that while I was at it - thanks for pointing it out!
In the meantime, don't worry - it shouldn't drastically change the course of your playthrough if you didn't choose those options!
Lucas appalled us all; he eloped with a young woman, defying all the good hopes we had once cherished for him, and found himself disowned from his inheritance.
If you choose this option, what happened to Lucas? Where is he in the present (if he's still alive)? Do Artemisia and Ambrose have cousins out there?
In this eventuality, Lucas's elopement didn't work out; the scandalous marriage was annulled and eventually he returned to public life, though not to the career of Chaperone. He remarried to Artemisia and Ambrose's aunt Helena, and then died. Aunt Helena has a daughter, Sophia, with a second husband, who you'll recall appears in the opening chapter of Volume 1.

okay, been on more of a writing kick these last few weeks and now I'd say the chapter's about halfway finished! 🎉 super excited for you to see it.
i should however mention that there's going to again be some pretty heavy subject matter dealt with in this chapter, and so i would be very interested in having a sensitivity reader look at it before it's published. i ask specially because it's going to deal with the subject of slavery (and this is also going to be a component of the following chapters, too). if you are a person of colour (ideally from an african/african-american background) and would be interested in this role then please do send me a message! i really want to deal with this properly and have any potential blind spots covered. i would be willing also to discuss forms of payment for this role, i don't want that work to go unrewarded!

I've stumbled onto Oblivious Melodies and I am completely in love with your prose and characterization, every time I get a choice I get so giddy about the implications and wonder about how things might differ in another playthrough. The Horne siblings are fascinating protagonists. You have such a way with words, it's a delight.
What a lovely ask this was to wake up to! I'm so glad you find the choices compelling - it's very much designed to have a butterfly effect kind of vibe where a seemingly innocuous choice might have unexpected outcomes far down the line, so this is really encouraging to hear! 💞

would you consider adding some accessibility options, like font size, color, etc? the cyan on white can be hard to read😅
Hey! Sorry, it took a while to get back to you on this after Christmas. I will definitely look into this - I didn't realise this could be an accessibility concern, however, and I don't yet know exactly how to implement these options.
What would be a better solution - an alternate version (or perhaps just a mode) of the games with a different colour palette? Or an option to change font size/font style/colour at will? I'm mindful that it might not be a one-size fits all situation when it comes to accessible reading!
Is it too spoilery to ask about Harry and Hyder’s romantic histories?
Despite his age I get the vibe that Hyder doesn't have any. He seems kind of closed off as a defence mechanism for how people treat him (although based on how the girls reacted in that town, there is clearly some thirst for him lol).
But with Harry, if Artemisia kisses him, she thinks that he's done that before, is that accurate? I noticed he also seems to toe (or cross) the line of propriety a lot (from Artemisia’s POV). So I'm guessing he doesn't put much stock in that, or he has experience interacting with women who are less “proper”/upper class? And Harry moves quite quickly with Artemisia, has he ever seriously courted anyone else before? Or considered marrying someone else before?
Haha, not too spoilery, no! And to be honest, I'm pretty delighted reading this because it seems like you've got a pretty accurate read on these characters, at least as I was intending to put them across!
Hyder's desirable to people, certainly, because he's polite and well-dressed and has some money and reputation to his name, but unfortunately he's also kind of fetishised as a person of colour too. He tends to be closed off, as you say, as a sort of defense against people who are only really interested in his outward novelty rather than his actual character. btw I also really don't see Hyder as particularly neurotypical - in his work and spirituality he's found his niche and doesn't really like leaving that comfort zone all that much, and interpersonal romantic/sexual relationships are a bit much for him to handle at times. That's combined with a serious mistrust in people's intentions, so he tends to deflect romantic attention all he can, and not really feel entitled to it either, as you can see with him really not expecting Artemisia to want to go ahead with the engagement.
Harry's a bit more typical for a man of his class bracket in this period - as I've mentioned a few times wrt: Ambrose, young men with some spending money tended to get away with a lot more sexual experimentation than their female peers, and I'm sure you can imagine that, as a businessman in the capital and abroad, Harry's had plenty of opportunities to do just that. Many of these dalliances, in cases like these, weren't serious romantic prospects - they were a sort of prelude to more mature and legitimate marital relationships, and yes, many of the women involved will not have been of the same standing as someone like Artemisia. In my mind, Harry has not had a "serious" relationship before - only rather casual encounters with women that he himself regards as immature experiments, now to be put aside in favour of a proper commitment.
I was just wondering if a glossary or codex could be added in the menu of the game, for in-world lore that we learn as we go along? Stuff like months/seasons, major countries/cities, religion, etc.? Just to keep track of it all in one place
Sorry for taking a while to get around to this, I've been very busy lately! I see why that would be helpful, but there are two big issues that make me reluctant to do that: firstly, there's just too much haha. The lore's pretty extensive to the point that I have my own collection of pretty detailed word documents just so that I can keep track of it, and I really struggle to think how I could condense all of that into an in-game tab that doesn't get extremely hard to follow.
Secondly, and this is more of an intentional choice made about the narrative, I do NOT like heavy-handed worldbuilding. There's a certain immediacy I want to achieve by just kind of plonking the reader in the middle of this world that's kind of realistic, but also unfamiliar and strange at the same time. Essentially, I want the world to be something you familiarise yourself with by absorbing it by osmosis, seeing it through the eyes of Artemisia/Ambrose and having to infer a lot through context, gradually getting more au fait with it and truly inhabiting rather than just receiving all of the information at once. It might be that some readers prefer to have this info laid out before them so they can understand everything more easily, but the incomprehensibility and secrecy regarding some aspects of this world is kind of there by design! This is just how I prefer it, and I prefer to keep some things to myself.... at least for now hehehehe

finally finally found time to write today after so much time working on other projects. so glad to get the ball rolling again, even if it's starting a little slow!!
I'm rereading this now (it's been a while) and I just wanted to pop in to say how much I absolutely love it. It has such a unique structure, I loved how "closed" the perspective is (if that makes sense). All the pieces of the world you have to put together as the reader make me feel so invested. Plus, your narrative style feels actually authentic to literature of that time period. This Anglo world, but slanted. It's just so good, in my mind.
