this painting depicts a scene from georg eber’s 1880 novel ‘the emperor’. as the woman navigates the halls of a unfamiliar house in the night, she encounters argus - ‘something which as she approached it resembled a dog, and which was larger—much larger—than a dog should be.’ she attempts to flee the monstrous creature but is violently struck down, dying where she lay.
