There are some things that sit in the back of your mind - things you think you'd love to have, but don't get around to picking up for yourself. This is one of those: a Rumph mug from 1977. If you did Renaissance Faire in Southern California, then you knew how legendary Jim Rumph and his handmade creations were. That he turned his skill and imagination to Star Wars (and that Lucasfilm allowed them to be mass-produced) wasn't surprising, but we fans were grateful. These aren't rare by any means, but I'm glad to finally own Obi-Wan, a kind gift from Don Trim about 6 months shy of the 20th anniversary of when we met at the IMAX opening of "Attack of the Clones" at Universal Citywalk. We hadn't seen each other for years, but we met up this week to catch up over a coffee-shop meal and he rather unceremoniously passed it over in a Walmart bag. I put another 80 feet of striping tape on the car today, mirroring both sides. The rear quarter panels never quite seem to match up with the plans I've drawn on any of the cars I've done, so require a lot of tweaking. I'm willing to take an occasional risk, and can usually find the good in any breakfast cereal - even Grape Nuts. I actually like Shredded Wheat. And I like marshmallows, and Peeps, and fun novelty. But this is something different. I expected it to be pretty bad, but not to actually be *vile.* It's made with Corn, Oat, and Wheat flour, and in conjunction with the worst cardboard box I've ever seen food packaged in, smells like it is formed from some kind of wood repair paste. I'm flashing back to high-school shop class. And it tastes like... perfume? The culinary equivalent of nails on a chalkboard? I can still smell it on my hands, a cloying synthetic sweetness of the kind that comes from a rancid Yankee Candle. If there were really an autopsy-room stench-blocker (there isn't) I would be using that right now. The "marshmallows" are standard issue, but if this is the only Kellogg's cereal I'd ever had, I'd conclude that they didn't know what they were doing. It has no milk-stamina, it just gives in to instant sogginess, like cheerful sawdust. Don't be sucked in by the happy packaging, or the colorful rings and bunnies and yellow chicks-that-look-like-poop - this cereal is a horrible lie. Work on the G-wing: I spent about an hour removing the clear paint protector bra on the front of the car. The heat of the day helped quite a bit, and I didn't have to use my heat gun or a steamer to soften it up. It wasn't exactly easy, a bit of a battle, but I managed it with only a tiny bit of residue left behind. And I did give myself quite a blister on the thumb... But I got it done. Clear skies and tailwinds to the Z-wing... Bravo Zulu. Seems silly, but there were tears. I didn't think it'd hurt - it's just a car. But it also represents so many charities served, trips made, people met and adventures had over one quarter of my life. As a teen, I was told I'd never drive, and instead l've had amazing vehicles and incredible experiences. I hope it isn't this painful when the H-wing goes.
