OMGGG THANK YOU:,] Im rlly glad people are liking my AU, I've had it cooking in my brain for wayyy too long- haha !! But in terms of inspiration (aside from my own upbringing in religion), I originally started with just the designs for Devna and Saint-Ton before I was later urged to make them into their own AU. At first, it would've been something more in line with actual Hell and Heaven, but I thought this had already been covered as a topic, so I switched to covering the question 'what if hometown was more religious?'

So, building off that, I wanted to explore how Faith and Reilgion effect people! So going into the boss desings I gave them all little sentences to explore how faith effects them!

King: How would feeling betrayed by one's faith affect them? Queen: How would being given power by faith affect them? Tenna: How would being seen as inherently evil by faith affect them?

With the fung gang reflecting similar statements;

Kris: Being used and betrayed by a faith you never fit in with. Suzie: Being demonised by a faith and never allowed to grow beyond that. Ralsei: Being expected to perform a faith you know little about.

In terms of Darkworld designs, currently, I have it that the Card Kingdom will have an overall gothic look to its design. Having faith be something long-standing to reflect how long King has been dedicated, before switching to the knights 'following'.

Cyber city will have a lot of divine machinery imagery, since it's a banger aesthetic. And rlly suits for a relgious AU- haha havnt thought much beyond that.

Then Tenna's TV world is going to be more in line with an abandoned movie studio, which has lots of brutalism and empty large halls, kinda like those mega churches.

Saint-Ton and Devna have a conversation during the Bigshot era, after filming a western movie.

He was never happy.

He was awful at everything.

Everyone hated him.

He hated himself.

But it wasnt his fault.  He knew that if he could just get lucky, one time.  It’d all work out.

He refused to just be the white Congregant.

Drinking his days away with the little money he had left, he’d watch the others achieve what he could not.  They’d pray and be rewarded.

But no angel would ever bless him.

Growing up being the smallest, the dullest, the wingless.  It did something to him, made him angry with the world.  

Simply, he could not be.  If destiny deemed him worthless, what is the point of trying in the first place?

No angel would ever appear, no one would save him, no one could.  Or wanted to.  The angel had abandoned him.

If it even existed at all.

Oh.  I guess this could work

Inital Saint era

Finally, everything he ever wanted

Finally, all he ever sought

He was everything he ever wanted

He was big.

This was perfect, better than perfect, this was heaven.

All he had to do was listen, talk when he was told, and say the right stuff to make the people do the right things.  Exploit some people, manipulate some others, kidnap- kill-  No, he’d never. Saint would never.  Saint-Ton?  Eh, well, he got a free pass.  Anything for the dream, right?

The ‘angel’ had some strict stuff to follow, but he did care.  If he was getting by, then what was the issue? 

Sure, sometimes it got lonely, and he sometimes felt out of place-

But the new wings sure helped with that- and he got interviewed a ton about the message of the ‘angel’, so with all the attention, how could anyone ever feel lonely?

But he needed more- the ‘angel’ wanted him to get more.

TV was always a good option.

Bigshot era (with Dev)

This TV had issues.  He hated that; he was all kinds of wrong.  He needed fixing- lots of fixing.  Saint’s list comprised of these main ideas.

Voice- too squeaky, it was goofy, sure.  It would work well in those funny pictures and shit.  But it doesn't work for anything else, he's gotta fix it.

Height - too tall, Saint was well aware he was smaller than everyone, but Antversary was too tall.  Sure, he’d shrink down, but never far enough.  He despised it and took a bit of pleasure in demeaning him.  Telling him to lose a couple of pounds was just the easiest way to get to the guy he could think of.  It worked on most people.

Fiddling- he fidgeted and fiddled with his fuck ass hands too much. Why couldn't the guy stay still?  IT was distracting- not even for the reason that socially it was a bad move.  But Saint just hated how he moved.  In general, a visceral hate.

His eye, Ant, had a staring problem.  Saint didn’t mind it as much as he thought it would.  Honestly, it was nice to have eyes on him.  But Ant thought too much; he knew that, so each slight twitch of his eye made him very aware Ant was thinking.

His outfit... Genuinely, what was this guy thinking?  He apparently hated being demonic, yet walked around like a walking red prick.  Change it right now, the red’s iconic, but it's just too much.  Gotta tone it down.

Cold,  Ant was cold.  Not even in tone, everything.

Then again, there was one part of him that was warm.

Saint and Ant had begun a kind of de-stressing relationship.  They fought- fist fought- verbally fought, and then shared moments you could confuse for intimacy.

Saint found himself loving the thrill of it, wanting more of the guy.  Knowing he couldn't truly ever share anything with him.

He needed to protect not only himself, his position, his ‘angel’, but in a way, Ant.

The last one was just there to make the rest sound better.

Ant had grown on him, and Saint convinced himself it was merely a pleasure thing.

It was lonely at the top, not that Ant was even close to the top, but the height kinda bridged the gap.  IT made Saint feel uneasy; desperately, he sought that fragment of warmth that Ant hid away, knowing he’d only ever truly feel it if he were to reveal everything to him.  Ant was obsessed with his secret to get bi; he was very obsessive about the manipulation of it all.

Ant would probably give up on him if he actually told him.  Nah, he definitely would.

Gotta start being nice to him.  Well, he was, he was looking out for him.  But Ant loved those cheesy romcoms- those stupid buddy-cop movies.  He’d lean into it.

For the first time since the initial meeting, they started to get along.  He’d even given Ant-Devna a new name.  Something a bit less on the nose compared to ‘Antversary’.

Maybe he could let him in a little.

Old Dev timeline- I gotta redraw this (with explanations!!)

Wedding gift

Not necessarily born yesterday, but his exchange to new owners essentially gave him a memory gap.  Where he became a new person.  

The phase lasts for about as long as it takes to get a CRT from the wedding back home.

He’s very excited, can't control his emotions of happiness, so he’s just jumping around and is joyful that he’s going to get a home.  Due to this overexcitement, he wasnt able to pay attention to doing his job.

Accidentally chewing up the tape he was given.

He apologised, but it wasnt heard.

Thus began Toriel’s resentment of him.

Mr Antversaary Tenna

Initially called a ‘devil box’ by Toriel, his appearance wholly changed, becoming demonic-looking.  

He already wasnt good with his emotions- controlling them or understanding them.

So being hated for something he couldn't control about himself- left him to watch and rewatch movies- trying to figure out the correct social cues to become the perfect whatever Toriel wanted.

Nothing he did ever really pleased Toriel, and he would become very angry over this very fast.  He wouldn’t show it as he knew that Toriel had rules about it, he also knew from movies that it wasnt right.

Repressing lots of his own emotions, he started to have a lot of violent thoughts.

He grew to ignore people that were not important to him- everyone besides Toriel

He’d try to keep a polite attitude; however, he was still working out the imperfections of his persona, so it came across as quite flat and uninterested.  Which he was often.

He was never outwardly violent, but he’s extremely repressed and hates himself for appearing as the thing he hates- he's quite isolated during this. 

When he first strikes a deal with Saint, he treats him like a means to an end due to their closeness and the sudden reveal of a fake accent- Dev experiences something more than just tolerance and hate- something he confuses for love, so he acts accordingly to the best of his abilities.

Curses occasionally, but only when upset

Mr Devna

He got a rebrand from Saint. 

His edges got softer, and he learnt to better control all the negative traits he had, letting them out through his acting.

He became quite a good director during this time and started to enjoy the work and praise Toriel would give him.  However, he knew it was all because of Saint.  So jealousy began to fester.

He still has violent, intrusive thoughts, but they're always directed to Saint.

His employees don't avoid him as much as they used to, but they still prefer Saint.

Mr Devna is opposed to hearing his old name; he doesn't like it

He is quite passive-aggressive and still maintains the fact that he doesn't like people.

He changed a lot of parts of himself because Saint told him to

Still thoroughly obsessed with pleasing Toriel, he took to quoting her rules in a very chipper tone.

When speaking to others, besides Saint, he becomes overly friendly.

Often speaks in phrases: ‘that's how the cookie crumbles’, ‘don't look a gift horse in the mouth’, ‘early bird gets the worm.’

Trying to control his voice more- tries not to break his voice as often

Dev

He was moved to the garage after Saint left him. Toriel couldn't stand his programming, and to be frank, he just showed a lot of horrid stuff on it instead.  Plus, Dess was missing, and Dev couldn't seem to care, not with everything that was going on.  He just couldn't do it anymore.

Prepetually anxious 

His employees started to avoid him after a couple of months of his repeating the same questions, “How's your day?”  “Are you having a good time?”

He zones out a lot now, doesn't speak for days on end, and due to this, he stopped being able to control how much his voice cracked.

He fidgets too much and can't contain his emotions all that well.

He often assumes things about others rather than ask, which makes him quite erratic to deal with, constantly jumping through emotions.  

He thinks any feeling is a good feeling, so if he feels angry or happy, both are the same level of dopamine.

He wanders around the studio, not doing much

He gave up directing/performing after the garage 

When the fungang arrives, Dev falls hard and fast into becoming his old Mr Devna persona.

But it's like he's put on a poor skin suit, where things are rotting away, and his bones are showing.

He delivers lines wrong and makes too many costume changes. Dev’s emotions are going too fast a rate for him to keep up with, and he can't stand it. 

He hits himself in the head a lot due to Toriel doing similar when he was younger, and just as a method of punishing himself.

His hands must be fidgeting at all times.

He’s not ever violent towards the funga; most of his violent thoughts died after the first couple of years.  He’s just very intent on keeping everyone with him.

He locks Toriel up in a ball because of petty anger 

He never made a deal with Kris or the knight

Suzie helps him open up about his feelings and dispel some of the old thoughts he used to think, and she still keeps him chained in his mind.

At the end of the chapter, he's finally ready to start a new life with the promise of being taken to Castle Town instead- he lets Toriel go.

The Angel in this AU is wholeheartedly the player, but taking on the form of this world's religious deity. It's not the actual Angel, just looks 'close enough'. There is no actual Angel at the end of the day (?), just people trying to place themselves in the roles of Gods to gain power.

The 'Angel' / Player is just going along with the route of the game, since there's only 'one' ending, it makes sense that whatever they do- save people or not- will have no effect on the outcome. It's just here for the ride.

In terms of 'saving' people, everyone within the darkworlds seems to see the prophecy and the religion differently, so they cannot 'save' everyone in the way they all want to be saved. Therefore, the player will just go with the easiest interpretation of this as the literal 'spare your enemies.'

There are elements at play of 'futility in the certainty of doctrine' within this that I'd like to flesh out when more of Deltarune is released. :D

KING / THE POPE KING

IMG TEXT - The Pope King after following the religion of the deltarune for his entire darkner life, waiting for an Angel that’ll ‘never show’. Fed up with abandonment from both the lighteners and his Angel, it was no surprise that when the Holy Knight showed itself. King became endowed with something new, a figure who gifted him a Sacred Fountain. King, in a show of dedication to his new cause, usurping the other Popes / Kings and instated the Knight as the new holy entity, himself becoming the anointed Blessed King. He betrayed the other Popes / Kings, now holding onto the sliver of purpose he derives from his newfound religion, he sits ruling over a Kingdom with a false God.

My goal with King is to have him be someone who was disillusioned with his faith, due to never seeing it 'fulfilled' in his eyes. So naturally, when something else comes along (this case, the Roaring / Holy Knight), he'd rather switch to another religious purpose instead of confronting his own reliance on religion to bring him purpose in his life.

Also, he looks like a hamster/mole because he was kept in a hamster cage in Castle Town in the OG and Moles are blind (blind to his actions that are anti-faith, like idk overthrowing your fellow leaders in a coup isn't very peace and love of you)

Also, the reason for there being four popes/kings in this is because the Darkner's concepts of religion are an exaggerated and unguided version passed down from the views of the lightners. This was something forced upon them without their understanding of its basic concepts (e.g. one pope). Most darkners wouldn't describe themselves as religious because the Deltarune's existence in their lives is more like a 'why is the sky blue?'

QUEEN / BISHOP

IMG TEXT - Queen (bishop) is the computer lab’s new computer, bought to help code the local church’s website. She places herself on a high pedestal as she believes that since she’s the object the ligthners use to spread the deltaurne’s word. This has led to her parroting most of what the website says- even if it's a gross oversimplification. No small town church website will have the whole bible on it, so she fills in the blanks, usually with herself. She sees herself as the ultimate figure on all things Deltarune. She sees the Deltarune religion as a means of exerting power. And is unwilling to acknowledge any hypocrisy that the religion has or her own. She thinks the knight is all part of the deltarune- because it has to be or else she will have gotten something wrong, and she can't do that- since she’s apparently ‘the expert authority on the deltarune’.

Queen in this AU is meant to show the side of religious leaders who use their faith to give themselves more power, whilst not fully understanding the religion itself and its guidelines. Queen doesn't necessarily do this out of malice. She's aware that she's filling in the gaps in her knowledge with whatever 'feels right'. Since only having access to the church website, the base her beliefs off isnt a lot to work with. (the rest of the internet being heavily firewall-ed) Queen also pushes down any uprisings against the Deltarune heavily, since it's the thing that gives her power, and by giving her power, she can protect not only herself but also those she cares for- like Noelle. She will not give that up. So in a way, she's also a commentary on how marginalised people who are given power sometimes oppress people the same way they too would be oppressed if they didn't possess the powers that put them in higher positions.

Since all the darkners are considered 'lesser' than the lightners they serve. (Obviously they're not really- since technically the lightners are no different from the darkners in a meta context). Queen still retains a lot of her OG personality, with more of a focus on being 'holier than thou' - and she exclusively listens to church parody covers.

SAINT-TON

IMG TEXT - Spamton in this universe is not a spam email but a religious Insta comment (joking here- he’s a religious spam email). Being the smallest Addison, he didn't have much confidence- his wings were small, and so was his ability to fear monger about the oncoming raptures, like the others were able to do. One day, he gets a mysterious vision- and is gifted the opportunity by a false god to become its prophet, its puppet. He takes up this opportunity and becomes ‘the angel prophet”, where he went on to spread a massive amount of misinformation. Everyone around him assumes he speaks the will of the Angel. He soon comes to make a deal with Tenna, now able to spread more religious propaganda through the TV’s connection to the lightworld. Toriel started to have the TV on more as it showed more religious programs. Yet, when his partner finds out the facade, he comes clean. Attempting to share his secret, he's suddenly cut off. A book of scripture calls his name, and within an instant, he knows he's been cut off. So he runs. Slowly, he starts to morph into a puppet. Exactly what he was on the inside, a mouthpiece and doll for a false god. speaking in psalms, living in a garbage can, still attempting to grasp onto the fame he had prior. Leading failed cult after failed cult, even having to chop a finger off to fake his death after a particularly bad one. Freedom is a dream he wishes he could grasp again.

Saint-Ton, like Queen, uses his religious position to get what he wants in life, but where he differs is that he's held to the ties of the Benefactor. Who, in this case, is a false God trying to usurp power through the guise of being 'the Angel'. Using Saint as it's mouth peice to spread its own version of the Deltarune.

Saint isn't thrilled to do the things that the benefactors ask of him, but he separates himself heavily from it: 'it's just something I have to do to get by, everyone does things like this.'

When the Benefector gave him the offer for all of this, he also gave him a new pair of mechanical wings, getting rid of the flesh'n'blood ones (GUYS THIS IS SYMBOLIC FOR THE FACT THAT HIS ROLE AS THE 'ANGEL'S PROPHET' IS JUST AS ARTIFICIAL AS HIS WINGS), giving him two Halos since he's 'better' than eveeryone now, he deserves two.

ANTVERSARY TENNA / DEVNA

IMG TEXT - Antversary Tenna was gifted as a wedding present to Toriel and Asgore by Rudy. Toriel was originally not happy with the idea of having a TV in the house, due to her upbringing. However, Asgore had twisted her leg and managed to convince her to allow him to have it. Mainly marketing the idea that Toriel could play her church choir videos on the TV. She could not, however, as whenever she’d attempt to run the tapes, they’d malfunction. Already displeased with the fact that she had a TV, she opted to start calling it a ‘devil box’ because why else would it not play the damn tapes? Later, he changed his name to Devna to appear less ‘demonic’. After Dess disappeared, Saint-Ton, alongside her, Devna was blamed for influencing her to run away. Fearing he may affect her children, Toriel locked him away in the garage. Devna became discouraged to perform, no more rehearsals, no more scripts. He and his employees tend to just waste away the day waiting for something to change. Devna became an isolating recluse. He often follows Toriel's strict rules in an effort to prove he wasn't a "Bad TV".

But anyway.

Devna is meant to be a stand-in for those who are born in opposition to the religion they're raised under. Dev is seen as something inherently demonic within the eyes of the Deltarune, therefore, he is expected to be demonic himself. This expectation weighs on him heavily throughout his life. Thinking every action he dose is in some way 'self-serving' or 'evil', which in a way is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Why try to be good when people will never see you that way? But he does try at first.

During his younger years, Dev was fixated on appealing to Toriel- she was the only person he ever wanted approval from (he saw her as his mother), everyone else wasnt as important compared to her. So he'd pay little attention to them beyond being their boss. Yet, nothing seemed to work in terms of getting Toriel's approval.

However, when Saint showed up and gave Dev (at this time Antervsary Tenna) a deal where, in exchange for screen time, he'd make Toriel like Devna. They'd work together, with Saint giving Dev insults 'helpful tips' on how to change everything 'appeal' to Toriel more. This is where Dev got the stage name 'Mr Devna', which Saint nicked named him off 'Devil Tenna', which Devna never knew was the origin of said name. Dev later adopted it as his full name.
