The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because theyโre hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.
Did you know that soda machines at restaurants and movie theaters spy on you? That most common new cars now record your sexual preferences and send it to the manufacturer (and also data about anyone who also gets in your car, walks by your car, and maybe happens to be within visual range of your car)? That grocery stores are trying to force customers to download an app to scan barcodes on shelves instead of putting up prices, so the app can scan the phone, decide how much that customer should be squeezed for, and adjust the price? That more and more innocent people are being sent to jail for crimes committed hundreds of miles away because an AI facial recognition algorithm spit their faces out and the cops didn't bother to do the most basic of checks?
I am not uptight about privacy because I'm hiding something. I'm uptight about it because the people who dismiss my right to privacy are dangerous to you and me and our families, personally, all the time.
And often, they are assholes, too.
Been having really normal feelings about the trapped water theory and how fluids sealed away in bottles can't return to the water cycle and green waste / kitchen scraps tied up in plastic bags seals away nutrients from the environment in the same way
Love the argument "oh but if you transition you'll have to deal with being trans your whole life" because first of all there is nothing bad about being trans and second I'm still gonna be trans even if I don't medically transition I'll just be trans and miserable instead of trans and happy
Every time I hear someone say something like this I remember that one exerpt from that one book in which the author considers Gomez Addams as a trans man specifically because he has the energy of a guy who wakes up every day absolutely over the moon to discover that he gets to be a man with a family and a moustache and a wife who's taller than god yet again, and it becomes painfully apparent that people who say these things don't understand transness at all.

yes! the optics of this technique are great - because they are relying on two fronts of fear, they want to scare the population they are suppressing, BUT the also need to scare their support base
a lot of people who are in support of sending in suppressing forces really believe that TheirAmericaโข is under attack by militant revolutionary forces that want to destroy cities and murder citizens or whatever. This is a narrative that helps maintain the far right's grip on the moderate segments of their support base , and it really enhances that narrative being able to show them images of protesters that look like this
But having to show protesters that look like they are there to entertain a children's birthday party deprives the right-aligned media of a valuable tool for controlling that narrative, effectively making their position "be very afraid of these silly people, we actually need to send in the army because they are so silly" and it destroys a main tool of their propaganda machine.
plus it makes it hard for the police, who understand what it's going to look like when they claim they beat up the person in the inflatable party costume because they "felt they were in danger"
not to mention they have no idea who is in the costume - they could beat them up and then have it turn out to be a 14 year old girl, which is not beyond the scope of things that have already happened, but is the sort of thing that always gets a strong reaction from the public and is definitely not a good situation for the cops to be in
all in all, this is a great tactic
