Han Youngsoo - Jangchungdan Park, Seoul, Korea, 1956-63
Ainsworth Gladsly, ambitious young scholar, research fellow and up-and-coming historian is finally ready to make his mark on the world. When his supervisor learns of a rustic inn at the foot of the legendary Mount Vengeance, she sends him to be the first to document the exploits of the bold adventurers who face the perils of the mountain – and the dragon said to inhabit it.
But the inn is far from the sophisticated city life he’s grown to love, and even as he grudgingly warms to its rustic charm – and its lovely innkeeper, Honey – the mystery of the mountain refuses to reveal itself. Worse, Ainsworth can’t find evidence that anyone has ever undertaken the climb – every adventurer comes to the inn, stays for a single night, and then returns home.
And with Ainsworth’s reputation as an academic on the line, it’s a mystery he can’t allow to remain unsolved – even if he has to push the adventurers up the mountain himself.
thinking about having gone from being a teenager whose main personal spending was on books to an adult who basically never buys new books in a bookstore. there's a few reasons all mixed together I think: 1) I read e-books easier than physical books now, 2) I don't mind waiting a couple months for a library e-book hold to come in, 3) inflation in book prices is very visible to me
but I think also it's that getting a book, any book, that I want to read is so easy now, I just put a hold and wait, and I don't mind waiting, or if I can't wait an e-book is cheap and always there, and so whenever I'm in a physical bookstore, looking at the nice range of books I could buy, I'm very aware that I can get the exact same books just as easy and cheaper online
and what this ends up meaning is I only buy physical books when it feels like something special to have found the particular book, so used book stores, or the discount section for overstock, or at a con buying some tiny press novel directly from the author
no real conclusion here. just changes in how I structure my life I did not anticipate

It is so human and so not romance novel that after Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice reads Mr. Darcy's letter and accepts that Wickham was the real villain and not him, her reaction is not, "Oh no, I loved and lost him!" it's "Oh shit, I fucked up! I hope I never see that man again in my entire life."

A future that is already broken. A paradox that must be solved. A love that can never be erased.
In the beginning, the world will end. This is the story of what happens next.
When Cal meets a soldier of the French Revolution, he knows his lover is destined to die. But what's the point of being a time traveler if you can’t make a few small tweaks to the course of history? A little paradox here, an alteration there―nothing Cal can’t fix, to save the man he loves.
When Fadimatu walks into a museum in 2018, she stumbles upon her own mummified corpse, setting her on the path to a betrayal that has already killed her, and a murder that has not yet come to pass.
And when a sudden rupture in the fabric of history rips through the lives Cal and Fadimatu have built, breaking both past and future, they must reckon with death foretold, love forsaken, and a secret that will shatter time itself.
Wow, what a great plan these characters have created to solve their problems. Too bad there are still 300 pages left in this book

Have you read How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler by Ryan North (2018)?
yes
no
I've read parts of it
I've never heard of it
trying to sell the murderbot diaries to other robot fans is an uphill battle. yes, i also prefer it when my robots don't have human looking faces. i understand why you might not be happy with its appearance, but guess who's also not happy with having a human face
