She was on AT LEAST two groundbreaking TV shows that I know of (keep in mind I don’t pop culture, so for me to know two means there were undoubtedly more): The Golden Girls of course, where elderly women were allowed to have full and vibrant lives, but also The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which was one of the first sitcoms about 1) a female main character who 2) was not married and 3) was self-sufficient with no need for a father, brother, close male friend, etc. to ‘save her from herself’. It’s been cited as a key work in the second-wave feminist movement and much of it still holds up and is relevant today.

An actor is lucky if they get to be on one “show that changed the world” in their lifetime. Betty White managed AT LEAST TWO.

When some Southern stations objected to his appearances due to his skin color, White refused to budge on his inclusion. “There was some resistance that was put up. I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.

But the combination of imperialism, colonisation and multiple social and economic crises has left us in a state where THERE’S NO MONEY. Our industry is used mostly as outsourced labor for giants such as Disney. No, your favourite movies and series aren’t fully made in LA. A lot of the bulk of the work is made by us! We’re the cheap, overworked labor that doesn’t even get mentioned by name in the credits!

It's called "The Boy and the World", and it's from Brazil. It's deep, political and sad, but also entirely ok for kids to watch and ultimately hopeful. It's low budget, but very colorful and beautifully designed. So far my very favourite animated film made in Latin America so far, and on par with Ghibli stuff in terms of depth and vision (IMO).
