This is a random soukoku drabble inspired and beta-read by @leio13! Thank you so much!

Summary:  At the end of a failed mission, all the stars go out. But it’s okay, so long as Dazai is next to Chuuya.

“Hey, Chuuya,” Dazai whispered, frantically searching the puddled ground with his hand. “Chuuya?”

Dazai felt Chuuya’s fingers wrap around his own and squeeze them. They trembled subtly, softly rocking Dazai’s hand back and forth.

“I’m so glad.” Tears streamed down Dazai’s blood-stained cheeks, sullied from their pure clarity as they rolled along. Dazai wiped at them foolishly, smudging his red cheeks like makeup. Their bitter taste was masked by the vile blood which dribbled from his mouth as he laughed faintly. In the blackness of his mind, there was ecstasy. Chuuya was alive, and that’s what mattered. “You’re alright.”

“Oi, Dazai, are you alright?” Chuuya stared at his partner. Blood had seeped through his bandages and clothes in dark patches like paint through paper. It rained from his eyes, washing sordidly over his cheeks. Chuuya tried to wipe the crimson tears away, but their flow was endless, and they only ruined his gloves.

“All I see is black. Are there stars?”

Chuuya sighed (he could only hope Dazai didn’t hear). He was honestly relieved Dazai couldn’t see him, the horrible state he was in. He was covered in dirt and blood. Something terrible had happened to his abdomen that even Chuuya didn’t want to look at. From the screaming pain, he could only guess. But Chuuya ignored that. He ignored the blood which rose in his throat, the throbbing in his skull, the spinning world around him. He would be Dazai’s eyes, even if it was only for a moment. Even if his eyes deceived him.

Chuuya stared up at the dark sky. The stars twinkled above, too grand to care about Chuuya’s trivial concerns. “No, not tonight. They’re too dim to see.”

Pushing back the dirty brown hair from his partner’s forehead, Chuuya placed a light kiss. “You don’t need to worry. I’m here, okay?” He choked on the words, bringing blood to his lips.

“Thank you.” Dazai smiled weakly. Even through the blood, it shined in its authenticity. It was a familiar grin, visible to Chuuya alone, only appearing at their most intimate moments. Even now, it comforted Chuuya, easing him through his last breaths. He lay down next to the brunet and gently squeezed his hand. He held on tightly, feeling the vibrations and pulses under Dazai’s skin–signs that he was still alive–until his own heartbeat stopped.

As his senses faded, Dazai took comfort in the familiarity of the scene: lying side by side with Chuuya in the darkness. He could still feel the warmth of Chuuya’s kiss and the gentle tone of his voice–Dazai had ingrained those deep into his memory a long time ago. Even if Dazai didn’t wake up the next morning, Chuuya would still open his groggy, blue eyes as he did every day in search for coffee. That image was enough to give Dazai hopes of sweet dreams as he fell into his final sleep.

The stars shone above, oblivious to him as he was to them.

A light cough surfaced from the dust and debris. Hoping he’d find who he was looking for, Chuuya scrambled over when a hushed whisper greeted his ears before he got close enough to see.

“Ne….Odasaku…”

Glazed over with pain, amber eyes stared at the sky. Blood glistened against the burnt gold light and trickled onto the ground.  

Keeping his face towards the heavens, Dazai slowly exhaled without acknowledging his presence.

“Was I…able to…save people?”

On sight, Chuuya froze. Even without directly matching eyes, he could see expectation glittering within brown irises as if hoping to hear something favorable.

Something to ease his troubled mind before parting.

Reluctantly, he gave in.

Kneeling beside the brunet, Chuuya held Dazai’s hand and gently squeezed.

“You were,” he whispered in a soothing voice. Several fingers twitched at the contact, and a look of relief crossed the detective’s face.

“Did…I…“

His chest burned listening to his former partner struggle to talk through gasping breaths.

“Do….well..?”

Fighting back tears, the executive brushed aside brown bangs and endearingly smiled.

“You did.”

With Dazai’s hand losing its strength, he held on tighter, unwilling to let go so soon.

“I see,” the taller man murmured as crimson dripped from his lips.

“Then…there’s nothing else…I’d want.”

At the calm statement, Chuuya grit his teeth and lifted Dazai’s head onto his lap.

“Then I’m glad, Dazai.” He replied the best he could though his tears.  

Brown eyes blinked several times. A look of confusion flickered across their surfaces; as if the brunet didn’t recognize his face.

“Though…Odasaku….” the younger one started between shallow breaths.

“There’s…one thing… I regret.”

Not trusting himself to remain steady if he uttered another word, Chuuya lowered his head and squeezed Dazai’s hand once more.

Actions that spoke louder than anything he could ever say.

Comforted by the silent gesture, Dazai contently sighed as light faded from his eyes. The brunet’s own tears fell like spring rain.  

“I didn’t…“

When the hand in his own fell limp, the executive shut his eyes, trying keep the image from burning into his mind.

“…get to tell Chuuya that….”

He screamed as Dazai’s final parting hung in the air.

18. “Here, drink this.  You’ll feel better.” - Soukoku

When Dazai entered Chuuya’s apartment that morning, he found the redhead sprawled on the couch, arm over his eyes. Feigning obliviousness to Chuuya’s suffering, he chimed, “Good morning, Chuuya!”

“Nnn…shut up…” The half-sleeping man groaned.

“Now, that’s no way to greet your boyfriend~!” Even at a time like this, Dazai couldn’t refrain from teasing his partner.

“I’m sleeping.”

“Not anymore.” Dazai pranced over to Chuuya, and, brushing his orangey hair from his face, planted a kiss on his forehead. “What’s wrong? Drank too much yesterday?”

The growl in response was an obvious ‘yes’.

“You know, Chuuya, you of all people need to be careful with alcohol.”

“You need to shut the fuck up.” Chuuya’s head pounded, and Dazai’s lectures didn’t help in the slightest. They were probably making it worse. Although the light, which Dazai had unhelpfully turned on, was extraordinarily irritating, he opened his eyes slightly only to see the brunet standing around uselessly. “Hey, while you’re here, can you get me some coffee?”

“Hm? Sure thing.” Dazai skipped away humming, a response Chuuya entirely didn’t trust.

With Dazai out of the room, Chuuya grinned slightly. Despite his annoying remarks, Dazai certainly had good intentions. They were far along in their relationship that Chuuya could discern (at least slightly) the motives of Dazai’s behaviors. Besides without the brunet, he’d be absolutely helpless. Chuuya imagined he couldn’t even stand up without the world spinning. Not that he even wanted to stand up; he was too exhausted. He tried to repress the mixing in his stomach, which threatened him to get up sooner or later.

Regardless of Chuuya’s faith in his partner’s intentions, it didn’t mean Dazai was going to bring him coffee.

“Here, Chuuya, drink this.” The brunet placed a glass on the table. “You’ll feel better.” The clear liquid sloshed back and forth in its container. Not coffee.

“I asked for coffee.”

“I know, but this is better. Just drink it.”

Chuuya stared up at Dazai with deadpan disbelief.

“Come on. It should make your headache better.”

“Fine.” Chuuya griped before lifting his upper body to take a sip. As soon as he was remotely off the couch, Dazai plopped down in his spot. “Hey.” Chuuya hissed.

“Just pretend I’m not here.” Dazai smirked mischievously. Chuuya wasn’t sure if he hated or loved that face.

“Alright.” Chuuya flopped forcefully onto Dazai’s lap.

“Agh!”

“Huh? What was that?” Chuuya grinned.

“How mean! I was just trying to help!”

“I know. Thank you.” Chuuya shifted, making himself (and Dazai) more comfortable. “You know, your stupid water did nothing.”

“Give it time.”

Dazai ran his fingers slowly through Chuuya’s hair. Their soft pressure massaged his headache.

“How’s that?” Dazai asked.

Quiet monitors beeped in the background as the silver moon casted shadows across white sheets. The curtains rustled from a cool breeze bringing a sense of serenity to the room. A steady pulse, a normal respiratory rate, a stable condition.

Chuuya tightly shut his eyes, forcing the image of an unconscious and barely breathing Dazai lying in a pool of his own blood out from his mind. Familiar bitterness of bile rose to the back of his throat and threatened to spill over as waves of fear and panic came rushing back with the horrifying memory, but he pushed it all down and tightened his hold around the brunet’s hand.

It was alright now. Dazai had been declared out of danger several hours ago.

He was still here. His heart was still beating. His lungs were still breathing. He was still alive.

The faint warmth between his hands confirmed this truth, and yet, tears pricked the corners of his eyes as smell and sight of blood dripping from slit wrists flooded back into his senses.

The slow rise and fall of the unconscious man’s chest was but a small comfort considering how pale he’d become due to the sudden blood loss. Eyes that glittered like amber jewels remained shut, and brown hair framed his face like a serene photo.

If they weren’t in a hospital, Chuuya would have thought Dazai was having a pleasant dream, but this,

This was a nightmare.  

The IV line continuously dripped, slowly adding fluid into the brunet’s bloodstream. Watching the cold liquid, Chuuya brought Dazai’s wrist up to his lips and gently kissed the bandaged skin. He knew the soft fabric would make it difficult to locate the faint pulse but looked for it anyway. Even with the machines monitoring Dazai’s condition, he couldn’t bring himself to trust them in case something with wrong, and he ended up losing—

Just the mere thought made his chest constrict with pain. He’d already lost so much.

He couldn’t lose Dazai as well. Not like this.

Sapphire eyes fluttered shut. He was aware, painfully so, that the other man viewed their partnership as purely business related, but he…

Still keeping his lips pressed against the brunet’s wrist, Chuuya whispered against the bandaged skin.

“Please be okay.”

Gentle beeping echoed in the room.

“I won’t ask for anything else so please.”

Heartache burned within and strangled his voice.
