Study for Love and Life (ca. 1880) ✶ ✶ ✶ ⊱⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰ ✶ ⊱⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰ ✶ ✶ ✶
Love and Life, oil on canvas (ca. 1884–1885) George Frederic Watts (British, 1817–1904) depicts a winged youth as Love tenderly guiding a frail woman representing Life up a steep, rocky path. This allegory suggests that while human existence is inherently vulnerable, it remains capable of the difficult ascent when supported by the divine spirit of love. The evolution of this concept can be traced through the 1880 gesso duro sculpture titled Study for Love and Life, which is held at the Watts Gallery. As part of the House of Life series by the artist, the canvas remains a central masterpiece of the Symbolist movement at Tate. Loc. Tate Britain, London, UK. Dim. 222.2 cm H x 121.9 cm W (87 1/2 x 48 in.).
