According to the medieval legend, Lady Godiva rode through the streets of Coventry to persuade her husband to lift the heavy taxes imposed on the townspeople. Out of respect, the citizens stayed indoors and closed their windows, allowing her to pass unseen. Collier captures the quiet courage of that moment, turning a legendary act of compassion into one of the most memorable images in Victorian art.
