Ryland Grace - When We First Met (Fluff)
Word count: 1.8K
A/N: My schedule looks really busy for the next few months, so I may just stick to headcanons/ shorter fics till I get more time to write, but Iâll do my best to keep them coming. I also feel like my brain has stopped working several weeks ago, so I do apologise if there are some inconsistencies, pls let me know so I can fix them :)
I am currently working on a mixture of smut/fluff headcanons for Adrian Chase, Ryland Grace (ofc), and Eddie Munson, so wish me luck! I hope you enjoy this! Definitely wasn't inspired by real life or anything....
Content: Set before PHM, starts off with them as undergrad students. Gender neutral reader (I tried), meet-cute, mutual pining, both cowards about their feelings (who said that?đ), late-night confessions, and a brief kiss at the end.
â----------------------------------------------------
You and Ryland first bumped into each other in the lecture hall of a gen ed course during your undergrad years. It had been a quick interaction; both of you were just trying to find a seat before the professor started talking. You would never admit it out loud, but you were contemplating dropping the class until you met him; something about him made you want to say. You never really said much to each other, only acknowledging the other with a passing smile if you happened to make eye contact, which happened quite often, actually⊠that shouldâve been the first sign. Still, neither of you had the guts to do anything about your festering feelings beyond a few glances and smiles at each other, so nothing came of it. Â
That was until you met up with some of your friends for a study session on campus a few weeks before exams, and lo and behold, one of them walked in with a shit-eating grin, alongside the guy you had been talking her ear off about over the past semester.Â
âHeyy, guess who I bumped intoâŠPeople, this is Ryland. Heâs in one of my molecular biology classes, and heâll be joining our little study sess.â She proceeded to introduce him to everyone, listing off the names of everyone sitting at the table, but he couldnât stop his eyes from staring at you the entire time. â...and finally, this is-âÂ
âHi⊠um, I think we actually have a class togetherâŠâ Ryland said, raising his hand to wave at you awkwardly while smiling at you. âSorry, I didnât mean to interrupt.â He said, turning his head to face your friend. He looked equal parts excited and nervous as he glanced back at you.Â
âItâs fine, seems like you two know each other well. Why donât you go and sit next to them.â She said, throwing you a wink as she nudged him towards you. What she didnât tell either of you was that both of you had been talking to her about your feelings for each other. Now she wasnât going to be a bad friend and share what either of you told her in confidence, but she definitely didnât have any issues playing matchmaker. As the evening went on, both of you had pulled away from the others, laughing at each other's (terrible) science puns, and getting to know a bit more about the other.Â
The chemistry between you two came so naturally; if anyone had seen you two together, they wouldâve thought you had known each other for years, and that's what most people assumed every time they saw you together for the next few years of your lives. You two would catch up over coffee, both of you complaining about your Masterâs research, talking about the book you decided to read together, teasing each other, and ofc Ryland begging you to teach him how to âcriss-cross with the needle and thread.â And without a beat, every single time someone would come up to you two, usually a sweet older lady with her husband, commenting on how you two make such a cute couple. It never failed to make you blush. Initially, you would correct them, but after a while you two thought it would beâfunnyâ to play along.Â
You two were so preoccupied with your own feelings that you didnât even consider the possibility that the other might return it, too afraid your own feelings would ruin your friendship.Â
I mean, what if you didnât feel the same way? Thatâs what was holding back Ryland. He didnât want to risk ruining things with you on the off chance you mightâve liked him back. If you didnât feel the same way, then you might think he was only friends with you because he liked you, like your friendship didnât mean anything to him. Then you would definitely pull away, and he couldnât⊠no, he wouldnât risk that. He would much rather pretend his feelings didnât exist if it meant you would stay in his life.
You had been having similar feelings about him. You had always liked him, but along the way your little crush developed into something more. He wasnât just some guy you admired from afar anymore; he was Ry, the person who made your heart flutter when he complimented you, the person who brought a smile to your face when you were having a bad day, the person who never made you feel like you were too much for him, and the person you knew you could rely on at the end of the day. You couldnât imagine your life without him now, but even those thoughts werenât enough to pull a confession out of you.Â
It wasnât until you both had a movie marathon at his place one evening that you considered he might return your feelings. You were comfortably curled up on one end of the couch when you caught him glancing at you from the corner of your eye. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothingâŠWhy would something be wrong?â He responded awfully quickly.
âYou were looking at me, so I thought something was wrong.â You shrugged.
âI wasnât looking at you.â He said, avoiding eye contact.
âYeah, you were. I saw you.â You insisted.
âOkay, even if I was, which I wasnât, thereâs nothing unusual about it. With how often we hang out, Iâm technically always looking at you.â He reasoned.
âIs that so? Please, tell me more about how you look at me.â You said teasingly now, turning to face him.
âNot like that! UmâŠYou know what I mean⊠weâre missing the good part of the movie.â he said abruptly, his ears turning cherry red to match his face as he turned to hide it from you, suddenly watching the T.V very intensely. You both settle into a comfortable silence, a smile playing on your lips as the movie plays in the background. Does he like me? Surely I wouldâve noticed if the person I liked felt the same way, right? You glance at him for a second, contemplating the possibility of him returning your feelings, thinking back to the times he would get shy when complimenting you. HuhâŠMaybe I wouldnât, you think. You see him shift towards you out of the corner of your eye, laying his head in your lap contentedly with his eyes closed.Â
âIf I ever moved to Iceland, would you move with me?â He asks, opening his eyes to look at you.
âIceland? Why there? You ask, looking at him quizzically, gently dragging your hands through his hair, pulling a sigh from him.Â
âIdk, itâs just a place that popped into my head. Forget I asked anything.â He says, moving to sit up.
âWhy are you moving?â You ask quickly.
âIâm not movingâŠIt was just a hypothetical question.â He responded, sitting with his back to you.
âI wasnât talking about Iceland. I meant, why are you getting up from my lap? Stay.â You said, gently tugging him back. He settled comfortably on your lap, and you both stayed like that for the remainder of the evening, raking your fingers gently through his hair as he tried not to fall asleep. He wishes he could stay here, in your lap forever, but his roommates return from their night out, slamming the door shut on their way in, causing Ryland to shoot up and fling himself to the other end of the couch, his heart racing, feeling like a couple of teenagers caught making out by their parents.
âHey, lovebirds, weâre home!â His roommates joke like usual, but this time something feels different. The tension in the air is thick, and with neither of you able to make eye contact, you decide itâs best to call it an early night. Youâre staying at his place tonight, so after you brush your teeth, you go to his room to find the air mattress covered with a bunch of blankets and pillows. He watches you settle into the pile of blankets, watching you make yourself comfortable
He walks over from where he was standing and collapses on top of your blankets, trapping you underneath him.
âRyâŠWhat are you doing⊠Youâre too heavy. Youâll suffocate me to death.â You say, giggling as he moves his arms to circle you, trapping you in place. Â
âThatâs okay, Iâll just bury you in the backyard. Thereâs enough space for you.â He mumbles into the blanket.
âVery funny Ry.â you say. God, he really loves it when you call him Ry. Youâre the only person who does. He looks up at you in the dimly lit room, smiling before burying his face in your neck.Â
âI swear Iâll do it.â He says, tightening his hold on you.Â
âThen who will move with you to Iceland?â You ask teasingly, hoping to distract him so he doesnât notice the blush creeping up your face due to the proximity. âIf Iâm being honest, I would prefer to move somewhere more tropical. If you want me to move with you, it needs to be somewhere I like too.â
âReally?â He mumbles. âWell, I guess Iâll have to marry you so I can take you with me.â
âYouâre going to have to ask me out first before you marry me.â You respond.
âAnd if I did, would you say yes?â he says, the words slipping out before he can stop himself. He looks up at you with his puppy dog eyes, waiting for you to push him away. Instead, you pull your arms out from underneath him, wrapping them around his neck to pull him closer.Â
âDoes this count as a yes?â You whisper, your breath ghosting his lips, before you pull him forward, causing him to crash into your lips. It takes him a second to process whatâs happening before he starts moving his lips, his hands moving up to cup your face gently. He breaks the kiss, pulling away slightly to catch his breath as he takes in what just happened. He smirks, his hands now caressing your face.Â
âYou know, I donât think I quite got it. Maybe we could do that again, just so weâre clear on whether youâre saying yesâŠâ He says, leaning towards you again, causing you to humm against his lips once they touch yours again.Â
Eventually, you told your friends and his roommates you started dating and were met with happy responses. âWere you two not already dating? Then why was I calling you lovebirds?â Was his roommate's response to finding out. Your friends on the other end were a bit more enthusiastic. âFinally! It took you two forever to figure out you liked each other.â But you two were happy; even if you had wasted years pining over the other, it worked out in the end.Â
