Synopsis: Abby finally comes back after two years, you still feel the same, does she?
Notes: hiii, this is the first time I post something I wrote here. This is very short and not proofread. English is not my first language, please interact if you see or like it.
โIโm never going to the beach with you guys again!โ
I feel my skin stick to the leader seat, the comfortable warmth and post beach tiredness finally hitting me
โYou love us, mayโ I reply with a sweet voice as Maya parks in front of my house. I immediately notice a strange car parked on the drive way
โwhoโs at your place?โ james asks putting his shirt back on, no shirtless boys allowed in the house as my mom would say
โi was wondering the same thingโ i quickly gather my stuff, me and james say our goodbyes to the designated driver and walk to the front door.
I hear a familiar male voice talking, everyone laughs, soft music plays and we can smell good food on the making. We are greeted with people I recognize to be my parents' friends in the living room, we follow up to the kitchen to try to find my mom, and what we find there makes me stop in my tracks. Jamesโ comment about my taste for muscular women being left as a joke for my subconscious.
โHi ellsโ Abigail Anderson, the girl i spent all my days with from the age of six to fourteen, was standing right in front of me, flash, bones and the sweetest smile ever. Just as pretty as the day she left, but much taller and more muscular.
I couldn't move, my mouth was slightly open and my eyes were wide. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and before I could stop it, the words had already left my mouth.
โCan I hug you?โ my voice is shaky, unsure. She nods. A soft of course seems to leave her lips, but I don't quite register. I drop my bag to the floor, letting it hit the ground with a thud as I almost throw myself on top of the blonde girl.
I throw my arms around her shoulder, grabbing her as hard as I can as if she's gonna disappear at any moment. She seems to do the same, hugging my torso so tight it keeps me off the ground, she seems to make so significant effort for that to happen. Her smell hits me, a mix I do not recognize and an unforgettable Abby scent.
โI missed you so much, Abbyโ I say with my face buried in the crook of her neck.
โSo did I, Ellaโ I felt her hot breath against the back of my neck.
The day passes by light and fun. I finally got to talk to Mr.Anderson, still the same sweet wise guy he always was, not much different from his daughter.
Abby and I dance around each other all day, we talk briefly when some of her fatherโs friends arenโt trying to catch up with her, or my parents arenโt ordering me around. We steal glances when words aren't possible, and sneak touches when we pass by each other, just like we always did. Some things never change.
When the night comes, the house empties out. My parents and Abby's father talk on the messy kitchen table, we sneak to the pool area.
โwhat has changed?โ she asks me as our feet dance in the chilly water.
โA lot i think, i actually like summers now, I have more friends, iโm not scared of horror movies anymoreโ
โdoubt the last oneโ she says scrunching her face in the same way she did when we were kids.
โWhat about you?โ
โI was never scared of them!โ
I chuckle softly, "What has changed?โ
โNot muchโฆ I ditched basketball to focus on soccer and we adopted a dogโ she says shrugging her shoulders โBut im pretty much the sameโ
โAnd youโre fucking jacked nowโ I say it like it was a joke. It was not.
โYeah, I heard James comment on how you really like buff women, does that mean you have a thing for me?โ She asks with a smug grin on her pretty face.
โOh Abbyโฆ Iโve always had a thing for youโ That comes out so naturally it even surprises me. If i told fourteen year old me, Iโd confess my feeling for our biggest crush so casually, she wouldโve freaked the fuck out.
she seems to not be able to tell if i was bluffing or not, her pupils are blown wide.
โDonโt play with me Ella, not about thisโ her voice is low and serious, almost hurt. Her eyes are locked on mine.
โIโm not playing Abbyโฆ at allโ Its almost like the air has been knocked out of my lungs. Suddenly, Iโm scared of her reaction.
โyouโre not?โ she brings her torso closer to me
โNopeโ I whisper out, also leaning in
โgoodโ i can feel her hot breath on my face โcan I kiss you?โ

โก shy! abby. confident! reader. mentions of alcohol & weed consumption. jock! abby. stem! reader. questioning of sexuality implied. les! reader. confused! abby. lesbian yearning. ++ best friend! els ( for abby. ) no smut!
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ who you constantly catch staring at you. she really canโt help it though. you two are always in close vicinity to one another, and whenever you happen to be passing by to your desk, her eyes will wander to the way your hips move. it only began happening recently. before, abby kept to herself and only spoke if she had to. now, her bright blue eyes stayed glued to your figure. someone woulda thought you used magic on her.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ doesnโt party. she doesnโt drink and definitely doesnโt smoke. sheโs an athlete, so sheโs always scared that there might be a random drug test and sheโll get her scholarship taken away. okay, scratch that. she used to not party. until you dragged her to one, claiming that it would be good for her to socialize instead of only practicing and sticking her nose in books.
she was hesitant at first, but because it was you dragging her out, she couldnโt exactly say no. & now, with being slightly drunk and buzzed off of weed, she was definitely leaning into whatever thoughts she had been having about you for the past couple months. abby had been lying to herselfโsaying these weird feelings and needs were just her being confused. nah, it wasnโt confusion. it was straight yearningโnot straight, gay yearning.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ who makes any excuse to see you during the day. you two donโt share the same classes because of her soccer scholarship, but whenever sheโs in the same corridor as you, she tries ( and fails miserably ) to start conversations with you. sheโll trip over her words and make random comments, to which her best friend, ellie, teases her about it non stop. you, of course, donโt mind and even giggle a bit at her attempt to talk to you.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ who noticed you had a bit of a habit with twirling your hair when youโre nervous. after keeping her hair relatively short because of soccer, she opted into growing it out a bit; offering to let you braid her hair or do random hairstyles when she notices you getting anxious during studying.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ who blushes every time you give her a compliment. sheโs not used to being girly or anything because of being a jock, but whenever you give her small compliments about how beautiful she is or how well she did her makeup, she canโt help but flush completely. her entire face will go red, making you laugh. she knows youโre not making fun of her because youโll end up cupping her cheeks and squishing them between your palms, morning about how cute she is.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ came to terms with her sexuality after following you to a party. she didnโt want to get high, but with the whole atmosphere being lose, she couldnโt help but follow the motion of the crowd. with the haze and daze of weed, abbyโs eyes stayed on you the entire night. she admired your curves in your dress and the way your lips curled when you smiled. what really brought out the yearning for you was when she saw the way you kissed another girl drunkenly.
she knew you had a habit of one night stands. abby wasnโt too particularly fond of the idea of you sleeping with random girls, but when she saw your hands cascade into the other girlโs hair.. yeah, she knew she was in to you in a completely different way than just friends.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ invites you to all of her soccer game and of course you come! you even sport her jersey, painting black lines beneath your eyes and shouting her name in the stands. she absolutely adores it. itโs like having a personal fan girl, and she canโt help but look at you between goals. ellie, on the other hand, teases her about it non stop. you three had gotten close recently, and ellie always tells you about how abby canโt stop talking about you to her.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ gets desperately shy when you flirt with her. she knows your gay, so she also knows that you mean everything you say. youโll call her pretty, beautiful, gorgeous, and even let a โbabeโ slip out here and there when asking her to do something. it makes her heart race. like youโre talking to her as if sheโs your girlfriend. she had never gotten so excited about the word before, but when thinking of you, it makes her jittery.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ finally confesses to you at the end of the semester before summer break. she doesnโt do it in this whole dramatic way like she intended. instead, she does it quietly. when the two of you are binging a show and suddenly your bodies are closer than before. she knows that she wonโt see you for two months and you might not even dorm together next year. she couldnโt let the opportunity pass by her.
โy/n.โ she murmurs your name beneath her breath, making you turn your face to her. her blue hues admire your own; taking in the way they sparkle from the movie in the background. you look beautiful like thisโall cozied up beside her with messy makeup and pajamas. โcan i kiss you?โ
her question doesnโt catch you off guard. no, youโve been waiting for this the entire year. โthought youโd never ask..โ

comphet!abby, angst, straight s3x (sorry it literally won't happen again)
a/n: this scene was based off of something that happened to me irl so it was kinda hard to write, so sorry if the detail isn't great! enjoy my pain lol
...Looking deep into his eyes, a small pain pangs in her chest. Was she lying? No, this canโt be lying. She does love Owen; theyโve been together so long. They just made sense together, everyone they met said so. No oneโs ever pursued Abby like Owen did. Every other guy just gave up when Abby didnโt respond to their affection, but not Owen. If anything, he deserves Abby for it.
Then why did she feel like she was lying? Sitting a few inches from him yet feeling an impossible distance between her andโฆsomething she could not name. Abby felt undeniably empty and this feeling is starting to not only haunt her but hurt the people she cares about. She knows whatโll fix thisโฆit makes her feel disgusting, but she has to. Itโs her fault Owen feels this way, she should be the one to fix it.
โHey,โ Abby reaches her hand to cup Owenโs face, โI love you, okay? And I am so,โ Abby pulls Owen close, their lips brushing against one another, โSo attracted to you.โ Abby kisses him softly. Owen greedily grabs at her waist, lifting her to straddle him. Abby lets it happen, moving in robotic tandem with him. A familiar pattern that Abby didnโt even have to think about to replicate it; she knows him so well it feels boring. This isnโt about her though; she purely just needed Owen to feel better.
Owen lays Abby down, kissing down her neck. Wordlessly, Abby undoes her pants, waiting for the inevitable. Abby hardly reacts when Owen presses into her, she lets out a few required moans as to not throw him off. Abby lets her mind drift, simply hoping he is done soon.
Why did I let him do this? Why do I keep letting him do this? Why donโt I like it, why canโt I like this? Whatโs wrong with me?

Content: small town, tiny bit of angst, exbsf to lovers, lil bit of a slow burn (as slow as a short series can be lol), firefighter!abby, fluff, no warnings for this part but the overall story will touch on dark topics such as death, grief and religious trauma.
เงก
You hadnโt seen Abby since she moved away from town five years ago.
When she left she didnโt even bother telling you, her best friend, of all people. She even deleted all of her social media accounts, seemingly going off grid.
You have to admit, from time to time you do wonder where she is now and why you care so much. She obviously didnโt want anything to do with you when she left you in the dust like that, so why do you find yourself obsessively wanting to reconnect with her? You think about her more than youโd like to admit, but thinking about her a concerning amount wonโt manifest her in the flesh right in front of you.
For some reason the hardware store garnered a particularly large crowd of customers today, you joined the back of the line with indifference- neither annoyed nor glad to wait for longer than usual as you had nowhere to be urgently. The large bucket of paint you held in your hands began to dig into your skin of your palm, so you set it down and resorted to kicking it the rest of the way to the cashier. As you filed through the thoughts in your mind- should I get a coffee after this? My lips are dry, whereโs my lip balm? Did I leave it at home again?- a ghost from your past emerged. You choked on air as you followed the familiar sight with your eyes. A dirty blonde braid resting at the back of a tall woman swung lightly as if mocking you, tempting you to follow it like a white rabbit. You planted your feet firmly into the resin floor, protesting against the desires of your heart.
To follow or not to follow?
As your heart and head battled, you felt your pulse spike at the mere thought of meeting Abby once again.
You glanced back up to where you spotted the elusive woman and she was gone. A sigh of relief escaped you.
You knew what decision you wouldโve made and it disappointed you.
A pathetic amount of thoughts about Abby inundated your mind, so you resorted to your usual source of distraction and therapy- music. You popped your wired earphones in your ears and exhaled as the harsh yet cathartic music soothed the relentless noise in your brain.
It only worked for so long until the thoughts of her recurred. You sighed, disappointed in yourself; still longing to restore a lost cause of a friendship after half a decade.
The line shortened pretty quickly, and as you moved forward someone stepped onto the back of your shoe.
โOw!โ you turned around.
The person was taller than you thought, you craned your head back only to see a more mature, somehow prettier and much more muscular version of your former best friend.
โAbby?โ
She returned the expression, bewilderment pulling at her features as she said your name just as breathless as you did hers.
โYou look so differentโ she quickly scanned over your face and figure. For some reason it nerved you, even made your stomach flip for a second.
You felt yourself about to choke and pushed through the nerves as the next words left your mouth.
โYeah, thatโs what happens when you abandon someone for five years Abigailโ.
Despite how much you missed her, you couldnโt miss the opportunity to reprimand her for her thoughtless actions. She hurt you. Bad. And you didnโt think she realised how much her absence affected you, not just at the beginning but now too.
Abbyโs heart skipped a beat when you said her actual name instead of the nickname she was used to only ever hearing you say. She felt a tightness in her chest, suddenly aware of how much distance there was between you now. She obviously didnโt expect for things to carry on just as she left them once she returned, but actually feeling coldness from you- a usually warm and open person- hurt her more than she expected.
It was now your turn to pay for your stuff, you grabbed the bucket of paint and placed it on the counter.
Looking back at Abby, guilt riddled her face. You canโt trust her, she abandoned you after all. But for some reason you believed her sincerity; her eyes were beginning to form a sheen and her remorse looked like it lived in her bones- not just skin deep.
As you turned to talk to the cashier, Abby reached an arm forward to lightly pull you back to her but thought better and retracted it.
Abby didnโt know what to say, no excuse could give you back the five years of her love that you deserved.
The cashier looked between the both of you, sensing the tension, a curious look on his face.
โYour total is $18.99โ
You smiled and went to pay with your card but Abby beat you to it. You didnโt expect that at all. It was sweet but you still had to make it clear to her that that action alone wasnโt anywhere near enough to rebuild the trust you had for her.
โYou canโt buy my forgivenessโ
โI knowโ she gave you a small smile, abandoning the items she picked up at the store on the counter and instead carrying your bucket of paint for you as she walked you out.
An awkward silence settled over the pair of you as she walked you to her car. You werenโt sure where she was taking you but you couldnโt help but follow and entertain the chance encounter. You planned to initiate some small talk, make something of this seemingly fleeting moment but all of that flew out the window the second you met her eyes.
Those warm, watery eyes. A shade of blue youโd never forgotten even after five years.
โWhy did you leave, Abby?โ, you abruptly stopped.
Abby held her breath, hands now clammy- the sweat of her palms licking the handle of the bucket she was holding.
This was going to be a long, hard conversation.
Her brows furrowed as her expression morphed into one of partly veiled anxiety and pain.
โIโll tell you over coffee, itโs a long storyโ she was about to reach out her hand to grab yours out of habit and guide you to the nearest cafeโs entrance. Even after five years the urge was still there, to always be close to you, to protect you.
Abby bit the inside of her cheek, a habit sheโs formed every time sheโs anxious.
You couldnโt tell if she was bullshitting you. Sheโs just trying to buy more time to come up with a convincing excuse, you thought to yourself.
Abby could always read you like a book "I had good reason".
She watched you contemplate your decision and pleaded one more time by softly saying your name.

one thing about me is I will never adjust my writing style to avoid people believing itโs AI. I spent my whole adult life learning this skill. I will not go out of my way for even a second to make room for AI. if my writing ever, ever feels like AI, itโs because AI stole from us. learned to mimic us. I was here first, and it will not take a single thing from me. and another thing: I love em dashes. they are mine.
This is somewhat in chronological order of how I think they should be placed in the AU, not of when I wrote them.
โฆ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ (๐๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ)
[slight smut] [3.6k] Abby Anderson's been falling for you since the day you moved to townโsoft curves, sunshine smile, whiskey-warm eyes that see right through her. But she's spent her whole life learning she doesn't get to have nice things, and you're the nicest thing she's ever wanted. Every glance you throw her way, every accidental touch, every time you bite your lip and look at her like you've got a secret... it's getting harder to remember why she's supposed to keep her distance. One of these days, she's gonna snap. And when she does, she's gonna ruin youโjust a little, just enough to mark you the way you've marked her.
[fluff] [4.4k] In the hazy glow of a bonfire, fuelled by liquid courage, a drunken confession cracks open the carefully constructed world between a cowgirl and the woman she's been pining for. Abby Anderson, all calloused hands and a guarded heart, has spent weeks watching from the shadows, convinced her rough edges could never be worthy of something so gentle. But one whispered admission shatters every excuse, forcing her to confront a truth as terrifying as it is undeniable: the feeling might just be mutual.
โฆ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ
[fluff] [4.8k] Abby's been waiting on this moment for forever, but something about it just doesn't sit well with her.
โฆ ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค๐๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง'
[fluff] [2.3k] Abby Anderson is a morning person. You are not. When you fall asleep in her arms, she learns something about herself she didn't expect: she'd burn the whole day down just to stay a little longer.
๐ โถ [smut & fluff] [4.7k] Abbyโs always been good with her handsโroping, riding, and ruining you with just one kiss. Tonight, she plans to do all three.
โบ ๐ฉ๐ญ. ๐๐ [hurt/comfort] [6.7k] When a poisonous rumour seeps into your relationship with Abby, the trust between you shatters overnight. Will the truth come out in time to stop the wildfire of hurt between you?

โ เป summary โ abby wants you to come to her game even after you explained multiple times the only thing you knew about hockey was that they shot pucks into a net. however when you agreed to go and wear her jersey, you didn't realize what feathers you were ruffling
โ เป word count โ 2.4k
โ เป content warnings โ people are mean, reader is oblivious, hockey? subtle angst foreshadowing
โ เป pearly insights โ chapter three has finally arrived. i'm so sorry it has taken me so long to get it out! i'm hoping to get chapter four otu sometime before august... but considering it is kind of a filler chapter do not quote me on that! just a friendly reminder that the only way to join the taglist is by clicking down below!
You wouldโve never thought running into the star hockey player on your first day of college would lead you to this moment: her on her knees in front of you on her bed.
Itโs been a month of late nights spent in Abbyโs room giggling incessantly over stupid Instagram reels, walking to classes with your hand brushing hers, doodling on each otherโs paper as you studied in the library. And every second you feel like youโre getting hockey shoved down your throat.ย
She started slowly, mentioning practice whenever youโd meet up or text; exaggerating how tired she was or how some of the freshmen were acting as if they were better than the rest of them. Then it turned to her sending you her practice schedule so you knew when and when not to call her, not because she wanted you to be aware of the event that was happening on September 24.
Only after you got the calendar invite did she start dropping hints as to when the Wolves' first game was. Sheโd say how hard coach was grilling them because, in his eyes, the first game set the tone for their entire season; sheโd ask if you had any white because they had announced earlier that the student section theme was white-out; sheโd mention how a few of the teamโs girlfriends were coming to support her teammates.ย
However, you seemed to be oblivious to her insinuations, always simply nodding along whenever she would bring up hockey. So, Abby thought it was finally time to ask you point blank the Sunday before the game.ย
The two of you had set up camp in the library; you had a quiz tomorrow, and Abby had a mound of homework she had been procrastinating until the very last second, like she usually did. You werenโt paying too much attention to her rambling, focused on the words in the textbook in front of you.
It was only when she nudged you that you finally looked up for the first time since sitting down. โWhat?โ
โDid you hear me at all?โ
โUhhh no.โ
She sighed, closing her notebook and placing her hands on the table, โI asked you if you were busy Friday night.โ
โDonโt think so, why?โย
โYou wanna come to the game?โ
โWhat game?โ
โThe game that Iโve been talking about for like a month now.โ
You blinked at her, โOh. Right. Uh, I dunno, Abs. Iโm not a huge hockey person.โ
โYou donโt have to be! I can give you a crash course or Iโll have Dina sit next to you and she can explain everything.โ
โAbsโฆโ She pouted at your hesitant tone, that cute, adorable pout you had grown to love and typically succumb to, but your uneasiness outweighed it this time. โIโll think about it, but do not get your hopes up.โ
For the next three days, youโd get a text, or sheโd show up to hang out and would always start by asking if you would come to the game. You were lucky if that was the only time youโd get the question that day.
And thatโs what led you here, to the night before game day with Abby kneeling in front of you, hands pressed against your thighs as she all but begged you to come to the game. โPlease please please please please. Iโll even give you my jersey! We can match.โ
You stared down at her. โWhat do I get if I go?โ
Abby froze, mind racing a million miles an hour at the possibilities of the things she could get or give you for coming to her game, โIce cream?โ
โYouโll need to do better than that, Abs.โ
โI- Iโll buy your textbooks next semester!โ
โNo way. I donโt even know if Iโll need textbooks next semester.โ
Her lip jutted out, her list of ideas now running out. She waited a few seconds before she spoke again, eyes lighting up with a new suggestion, โIโll let you take that hoodie you always ask me for and two more.โ
โI get to pick the other two?โ
โYep.โ
โFree range?โ
โYeah.โ
You paused, โFine.โ
Abby jumped up from her knees, letting out an excited yell, โYes! I knew I would get you to come to the game. Ellie owes me twenty bucks.โ
โYou bet on whether you could get me to come to a game?โ
โWellโฆ yes, but I did genuinely want you to go.โ
You glared at her before relenting, flopping backwards on her bed. She lay down beside you, poking your nose, โYouโll wear my jersey right?โ
โDo I have to?โ
โNoโฆ but Iโd like you to.โ
You stared at her for a second. โI suppose I will. It doesnโt smell gross, does it?โ
โNo! I washed it.โ
โUnlike some other things you wear.โ
โHey!โย
You giggled at the offended look on her face, blocking your stomach as her hands came up to tickle you, โAbby! Stop stop! Iโll wear it.โ
She grinned, โGood.โ
You watched as she got up and walked to the closet, grabbing it off the hanger and handing it to you, โHere you are, your majesty.โ
โThank you, good sir.โย
โYouโre welcome, mโlady.โ
โYou do remember I said I know nothing about this sport, right? The best I can give you is a go team.โ
โGo team?โ
โYeah, at least Iโm being supportive of everyone.โ
โHow about you just cheer me on?โ
โYou think so highly of yourself donโt you?โ
โYep.โ
๐ผ
You were not prepared for the number of eyes you were going to have on you walking into the arena. Sophie and Dina flanked your sides, talking back and forth as you self-consciously glanced around you at everyone staring at the name across your back.
โDina?โ
โWhatโs up? You okay?โ
โWhy is half the campus population looking at me like I just committed a crime?โ
She smirked at your question, โYouโre wearing Abby Andersonโs jersey; surely you didnโt expect people not to look at you.โ
โI mean, I guess I thought about it, but I donโt understand why itโs such a big deal.โ
The three of you settled into your seats, shivers running through you as you tried to grow aclimatized to the colder temperature in the arena. You werenโt really paying attention to warm ups, going through your text messages, swiping away notifications you couldnโt care less about. Though, when the girls behind you filed in, you overheard their conversation, plucking away your focus.
โSheโs one of those girls isnโt she?โ
โWho?โ
The girl sat directly behind you gestured in your direction, โPaid an obscene amount of money to get Abbyโs name plastered on her jersey.โ
You tensed at the mention of Abby, glancing between your roommate and Dina, who had seemed to aslo be eavesdropping on the conversation. You werenโt going to say anything, it didnโt mean anything to you. You werenโt dating Abby, you didnโt even like her, at least that was something you were telling yourself as the days went on.
So when you saw Dina turned around, a fake smile on her lips, you stiffened even more.ย
โYou know, it isnโt a good habit to make assumptions.โ
The girl only rolled her eyes, โItโs obvious, Abby never gives her jersey out to anyone, you know how many people in this arena alone have tried to get it from her?โ
โIโm sure lots, but this lucky lady did it in the matter of four weeks, didnโt you, y/n?โ
You looked up, looking over your shoulder, โI guess?โ
โEllie told me she had to practically beg you to wear it.โ
That seemed to make the girls eyes widen. Everyone knew Dina and Ellie were dating, it was as much common sense as the sky being blue. โThereโs no way.โ One of them murmured.
โItโs true. So stop saying things when you donโt know the truth.โ Dina turned back around without another word.
โWhat did they mean?โ You whispered, confused.
Your newfound friend deflated like she had never wanted to tell you what she was about to say, โAbby was a huge player last year, donโt ask me how many people she slept with, but. Anyway, a lot of girls tried getting her jersey to wear to games but she never let themโฆ some of them resorted to ordering a customer jersey with her name on it so people would think they finally got it.โ
โOh.โ
You didnโt say anything else, shifting your gaze to the ice where the girls were still warming up. Your eyes found Abby immediately, standing near center ice as she talked to one of the members on the opposing team.ย
Once she skated away, she scanned the crowd and found you almost immediately. When your eyes locked, you felt a sudden warmth flow through you, a tiny, shy smile making itโs way onto your face. She smirked back at you, waving, which caught the attention of several teammates and people in the crowd.
It was then that you heard a snicker from behind you again, โCanโt believe Abby gave her jersey to her. I could name a hundred other people who shouldโve gotten that jersey instead.โ

Everything Dina explained to you about hockey went right over your head. She tried explaining offsides and icing, tried to explain the penalties, tried explaining what players were doing at certain times, but you were retaining no information other than Abby was a defenseman and Ellie was a center.ย
Throughout the game, you could hear snide comments from everywhere around you; the girls behind you making it their personal mission to antagonize you, people surrounding you as you waited in line for the bathroom or to get food, etc.ย
You tried not to pay attention to it, you did, focusing on Abby when she was on the ice and trying to understand the logistics of the sport, cheering whenever the team did something good and booing whenever they did something bad.ย
So when there was three minutes left to go in the third and the Wolves holding a comfortable lead over their opponents, you sighed in relief as Dina nudged you and grabbed hold of your elbow, โCโmon, we can meet them in the tunnel.โ
The three of you pushed through the crowd of students and Bridgehaven fans, you and Sophie trailing after Dina as you attempted to calm your nerves; something about meeting Abby after the multiple side-eyes and comments were thrown at you all night made your stomach flutter with butterflies.
Your hands fidgeted with your rings, twisting them back and forth, focusing on the faint sounds from the rink as the game continued. It wasnโt until you heard skates tapping across the floor of the arena that you looked up, seeing Abbyโs wide grin.
You squealed softly as she wrapped you in a hug and picked you up, twirling you around slightly before setting you down. โYou came!โ
โI told you I would, you doof.โ
โAnd you're sporting the best jersey in the world, I see. Wonder where you got it from.โ
By that time, Dina had left once she laid eyes on her girlfriend, and Sophie moved away from the two of you to give some sense of space.ย
โI think I remember someone threatening me to wear it.โ
โI did not threaten you.โ She glared, โI asked nicely.โ
โYou were being a pest.โ
You jumped when multiple members of her team clapped her on the back, walking towards the locker room, each shouting their own form of congratulations or good job with the occasional whistle or teasing remark about how they had never seen her smile that much since they met her.ย
โWhatโs all that about?โ
You watched as she flushed a deep shade of red, but chalked it up to how hard she had been working throughout the game, and it was only now catching up to her. She shook her head, โNothing, theyโre just being assholes. You okay?โ
Abby mustโve noticed the uncomfortable look on your face, tilting her head as if trying to figure out what had happened to cause you to feel that way.
โIโm fine.โ You gave her a weak smile in return.
โLies. Cโmon, tell me.โ
โI just- people were making comments.โ
Her face hardened. โWhat kind of comments?โ
โNothing big!โ You tried to reassure her, โThey were surprised I was wearing your jersey, thatโs all. I promise.โ
โYou swear that was it?โ
โYeah.โ
She took a deep breath before nodding and moving on, โYou comin to the after party, right?โ
โMaybe.โ
โMaybe?โ
โIโm kind of tired, Abs. Plus, I used all my energy trying to muster up the courage to come to the game.โ
She pouted but nodded anyway, โFine. But tomorrow I definitely expect you to be at the party.โ
โThat I will agree to.โ
โThen Iโll see you tomorrow?โ
โTomorrow.โ You smiled before kissing her cheek and walking off, linking arms with Sophie as you headed back to your dorm.
Abby went the whole way back to the locker room with a stupidly love-sick smile on her face, plopping down on the bench next to one of her teammates and untying her skates. Her teammate nudged her, โWhatโs with that look? Has Anderson finally found someone to obsess over?โ
โWhat! No! I donโt know what youโre talking about?โ
โBullshit!โ Ellie called from across the room.โ
โEllie.โ Abby scolded, her voice firm enough that it shouldโve deterred anyone from continuing the conversation. However, her teammates were not just anyone.
โYouโve gone soft.โ
She rolled her eyes, โI have not gone soft. Youโre imagining things.โ
Her captain finally but in, eyes narrowed, โTheyโre not lying, Abby. Youโve beenโฆ different.โ
What Abby failed to notice was the quiet fondness her captain held in her voice, like her personality change was for the better and not for the worse. But Abby was always one to jump to conclusions, and if her teammates thought she was going soft and it was affecting her game? Then she was going to fix it.
She made quick work of changing out of her uniform and taking a shower, throwing on the clothes she had stashed away. Once freshly clean and changed, she sat down on the bench, phone in hand, fingers flying over the keyboard before finally shutting it off and throwing it in bag.
