Cinnamon
Made of chocolate, made of words. Finest quality cocoa, 33% milk, handmade in Amsterdam. Creamy with a hint of caramel. I have travelled far and across many oceans, driven by a restless desire to discover new flavours. I left bits of me on burning lips and, while conquering hearts, I never thought I could die. Iâve loved in drops of spice and comforted many. Melancholy of warm rice and milk, memories of palm trees, of the West-Indies. I am of a faded brown. Velvet. I become golden when loved. My skin is cinnamon, my soul Indian.
I melted on a warm Saturday afternoon under paper flower garlands, Seville a cloudless sky. I loved his smile instantly. The generous sound of his laughter, the way it sang out in the plaza and filled it with happiness. My stomach turned, my mouth ran dry. His eyes sparkled with adventure. Fresh smell of sea. He was fresh like the Levante wind, fresh like green mint drizzled with honey, invigorating long nights of rum. Tattooed arms and knowing hands that shaped wood with great tenderness.
I liked how they leaned on my thighs, his fingers pressing gently into my flesh. Cinnamon looked good on him. It could very well be his favourite spice. He held his liquor well, this handsome sailor of Alameda nights. Iâd crown him King right away, to rule my heart the way he ruled his plaza, with his stubbled face and deep gentle voice. I guess that bold lips taste sweeter. So when his mouth covered mine, on a spring night below the neighbourhood tree, I gave him bits of me. Sweetly, softly, in chocolate almonds and showers of white wine. I liked how he tasted, intoxicating, hungry. Slightly salty breeze as he pressed his body onto mine.
I wanted to rub him into my skin like coconut oil and give him the Caribbean. Weâd be warm and soft like a tropical night, sticky like rum cake at a street party in the neighbourhood. Like rain in early monsoon in October. Just warm. Iâd call him sugar. Weâd swim in the Atlantic at night and watch the constellations brighten our path. Weâd find refuge in homemade butter chicken on wooden porches and dance merengue. Weâd take off at night and not look back. No lime, no ginger, just my sugar and me. Because he goes best with me.
Temperatures rose quickly as slow is not my style. Seasons changed. It was hot as Seville in July, suffocating and sweet. I lay burning, naked on a couch. Even caramel meets a bitter end at times. The wind blew as he stirred his Puerto de Indias and smiled. I wondered where he had gone.
Without a goodbye, I was left to drown. Midnight. Open sea. A small corner in plaza San Marcos. I loved his hands and the way cinnamon tasted on his fingers.
