Been reading Warren Ellis' *[FreakAngels](http://www.freakangels.com)* and came across this Paul Duffield post on the process. For reference, I've included the final image below. >The lines are drawn in pencil (a 0.5 HB mechanical pencil to be exact) over a rough image that is drawn on the computer using a tablet, and printed out in very pale magenta. Before starting the rough, I’ll look up or take photographic reference for real-life locations or tricky poses, and sometimes when I’m dealing with recurring complex machinery, or very large scenes I’ll build a 3D model in 3D Studio Max, with some crudely posed figures to get the scale right. This normally depends upon how pressed for time I am, so when you see a panel of Freakangels it could either be completely from imagination, heavily referenced, or mainly built in 3D, but there’s no single method I stick with. For an example, the recent factory scenes were built in CG first, whereas the earlier scenes showing Caz’s solar panels were mostly drawn from imagination with some photo reference for individual poses or objects. The example panel was drawn without any kind of reference. ***
