All's Well That Ends Well || Death OS
Lizzie drops to the ground. Sloane's a crumpled mess. The sabre stabs through my stomach and there's a moment of complete shock, the cold blade jabbing out of my stomach. My life flip-flops instantly, from pride over my kill, my victory, my first arena accomplishment, to instant terror and shock. Father's likely home, laughing about my failure to the other children. Showing them this is not who you should be. Slowly, I look down at the wound. I look back up at Raf, and our eyes meet. I give him a look, a look that just says do it. Do it now. Let me die on my own two feet.
Careers don't fear death. When the sword comes for my neck I don't shut my eyes. I accept the sharp pain and the strange sensation. I accept the darkness and the numbness and the boom of my cannon. I am a trained soldier, I am a Kaledon. We do not fear death. I do not fear death.Â
I stand up, my head back on my body. Well, it's not back on my body, because I'm standing over it and staring down at my headless corpse. It's incredibly weird and I'm angry, so fucking angry. I lost. The only thing I was ever good for was the Hunger Games. It was everything I had to be, and I lost. I lost the Games.Â

Child Protection Services || Sloth || Day 3
I was glad to get away from this freak show. I didnât want to know what else this man had up his sleeve. A fish daughter? What was next? His wife was part crab? It made no sense and honestly I didnât want to stick around to find out. North and I picked our way back to the camp site, gathering our meagre belongings before returning to the river bank to find it blissfully abandoned.
I let North in on the plan, handing her off my pack as I busied myself with felling a nearby tree. I didnât care about the noise it made as it crashed over the river. If a tribute was stupid enough to slink out of their hiding spot to come and investigate they would be dispatched with swiftly. Once I was sure the tree was going to hold us, I collected my pack from North and started the perilous walk across the river. Carefully balancing on the trunk of the tree as I slipped across the gap and motioned for North to follow. Once both of us were on dry land once more we were greeted by the crumbling castle. âYou ready, North?â
The man scurried away with his fish girl in his hand. "This is easily the absolute strangest day of my life," I commented as he joyously left us. "What the fuck even was that? Was it a fish or a person? Never mind, I think the answer would just disturb me even more." We headed back to camp and grabbed the rest of our things.Â
Sloane took down a tree and I kept watch, knowing the sound might attract another tribute. We cautiously crossed the river, slowly and surely, until we were standing on the other side. I moved the log away, letting it float downstream so nobody else could take advantage of our intelligence.Â
I nodded once. "I was born ready." We approached the castle and as I looked into the main entranceway, I could see bloodstains left over from the bloodbath. I clutched my weapons tight and let a smile come over my face. Now the real fun begins.
Child Protection Services || Sloth || Day 3
I followed Northâs line of sight, spotting the red flash in the water. I frowned, if she was in there wouldnât she be dead by now. I ran down along the bank, kneeling on the pebbles when I reached the tiny red clump and reached out to grab it. I thought it was just part of her dress caught on a branch but as I dipped my hand under the water this tiny face stuck on a fish body snapped up out of the water. âPonyo!âÂ
"What the actual fuck?" I whispered, staring down at the fish that now dove under the water before coming back up to splash around in my palm. "Is this yourâŚuh..daughter?" I offered as the man practically gleamed at the sight of the little fish thing. This was getting stranger and stranger by the minute.
I followed Sloane down the bank, the red-haired man hot at my heels. When she pulled the piece of fabric from the dress, I was shocked to see it attached to a fish... with a human head. I heard Sloane's whispers and barely stifled a giggle.Â
"Yes, yes!" He exclaimed, taking the little fish girl into his hands. "Oh, I was so worried..." he cooed over the little thing while Sloane and I stood back, exchanging a glance. This was easily the strangest thing that'd ever happened to me and it was taking every ounce of self control I had not to ask about a billion questions.Â
"We've got places to go, things to do," I commented, drawing the man's attention away from the little fish-person. "Are you two good now?"
Child Protection Services || Sloth || Day 3
I didnât want to waste time looking for his child but if we refused? Would the Gamemakers have programmed him to attack? I didnât want to risk it especially if we were going to go frolicking in the castle once the deed was done. I could tell North was pissed about this whole situation but what other choice did we have?Â
We fell into step behind the man, picking our way through the tree line until we came to the river bank. I glanced over my shoulder to our camp site, wondering why the man hadnât stayed there but it seemed he wanted to take an avid interest in our search. I walked along the bank, looking for any signs of life before turning back to my partner.Â
"You see anything North?"
I pouted all the way through the trees, all the way across the clearing, and while we stood at the banks. The man followed us, at least he was relatively compliant with us. He wasn't staying behind to look for any items we might've left.Â
We split up, each taking a different direction along the bank. I didn't see anything, frowning as I walked up and down the line of the water. It was even more apparent now how much shallower the water was, it should be easy to find a child. Unless it was a freakishly tiny child.Â
I shook my head in response, going a little further up the bank before returning. "Nothing." Suddenly, a little flash of red caught my eye up the river. "Hey, wait! Look! She must've floated downstream, I didn't see her before. The current's fast," I idly explained to the man.Â
Child Protection Services || Sloth || Day 3
Iâd been dozing off and on since North woke me up. Spending my time scouting out a tree we could fell to use as a bridge across the river before returning to my sleeping ally. When North awoke, the first rays of he sun were just starting to streak across the sky and I indulged in eating breakfast as North made an observation about the River. It made it easier to cross, especially if we had to tackle crossing it again once we reached the castle. I stood, my axe at the ready when a tall gangly redhead stepped out from behind a tree.Â
I tilted my head to the side, analysing him as he pleaded for our aid. Iâd expected a mutt but this? This wasnât really fitting with the idea I had in my head of an arena danger. I placed my hand on Northâs arm, silently asking her to think before she spoke. âWhatâs she look like?â
Sloane laid her hand gently on my arm, essentially shutting me up. I pouted, but put my knife away. I didn't want to waste time helping this dumb guy find his kid, we had far more pressing issues, but it didn't look like I had much of a choice.Â
"She's just little, she has red hair like me and wears a little red dress, she loves to play by the water..." The man trailed off, looking upset. I rolled my eyes. This was becoming more and more of a complete and utter waste of time.Â
"Well, she isn't here." I repeated bluntly. Sloane shot me a look and I sighed. "I guess we could help you look for her by the river. I guess." I scowled a little and reluctantly followed the man and Sloane toward the river, my trident gripped threateningly in case he attacked.
Child Protection Services || Sloth || Day 3
I woke up stiff and sore from the night spent in the woods, curled up next to that log. I sat up, brushing sticks from my hair, and instantly zeroed in on the river. "It's lower," I observed, excited. "Now we can actually cross it without nearly dying!" I handed Sloane a roll from last night and munched on one of my own when I saw a figure nearby.Â
Prepping a knife, I gasped as he stepped out from behind the tree. It wasn't a tribute, just an old guy with red hair and a suspicious-looking bag of chemical stuff. "Don't kill me!" He exclaimed. "I need you to help me find my daughter." I nearly laughed. Was this guy for real?
"I haven't seen any little kids around," I replied. "I don't know where she is. We're a bit pre-occupied with this whole fight to the death thing right now."Â

Arena Update: Day 2
Location:Â Camped in the trees near the river in the centre of the map across from the castle
Allies:Â Sloane Oleksei, D3
Weapons:Â Quarterstaff, trident, six throwing knives
Items:Â Coil of wire, flashlight, Camdenâs token (wolf-shaped pin), thermos of stew, two rolls
Injuries:Â None
Notes:Â Woke up surrounded by gross creepy spiders who trapped us in their webs. We escaped and spent the rest of the day exploring and retracing our steps, aiming to get closer to people. The walk took a full day once again but now we're back where the other tributes might be so we can go hunting. I recieved dinner and some knives from my sponsor while Sloane made a slingshot. There are eleven left and tomorrow, we finally spill some blood- that is, if we can find anyone.Â

I pulled my jacket tighter around my body, slipping down beside the fallen log as I stretched my legs out. I wanted to sleep, I needed it if I was going to manage putting some sort of thought into our river crossing and the inevitable hunting that would come once we made our way into the castle. âWill you be alright with the torch?â I asked as I tried to get comfortable on the forest floor.
My gaze was fixed on the stars that twinkled above us and the moon that hung bright in the sky. I wanted to just switch off for a few hours, to pretend that tomorrow wouldnât be the be all and end all of my time in this place. âGoodnight North, wake me up whenever you want to switch okay?â
I nodded, clicking on my trusty flashlight and shining it down at the ground for a moment before shutting it off again. Luckily tonight we had the stars and the moon to brighten up the space and keep me just a little calmer as I stared up at it. "I'll be okay," I assured her.Â
Sloane leaned up against the log I perched on and I smiled down at her for a second. We'd made it through yet another day and while tomorrow would certainly be an intense one, it was going to hopefully be just as successful. "Night, Sloane. I've got the watch from the pack, I'll wake you up at midnight so it's equal, sound good?"Â
She nodded and I looked up into the sky, touching the wolf pin. I knew Camden and Fay were both looking down at me, cheering me on to go home. I knew I had people to fight for, even though going home would be terrifying I was willing to do so for my siblings. "Tomorrow's another day," I murmured, gripping my trident and ready to wait out the night.Â

The rocks would be easy enough to grab, I could fill my pockets with stones tomorrow. The slingshot wouldnât do very much damage but in the end I could use it as a small distraction in a fight. âI can make you one if you want to part with one of your hair ties but with those shiny knives of yours you probably donât need one.â We were luckier than most. I knew some of our fallen foes hadnât had as much as we did to protect them from the hazards of the arena. But we had a pretty heavy bounty between us and with Northâs sponsor backing her every step of the way we would be okay for a little while longer.
I wasnât worried about Calin. I was reminded of the boy who had practically begged me to take him out on the train. He was free from his parents. He no longer had to meet their demands. I just hoped that his death was quick. âYeah, heâs better off. As long as it was swift⌠that was what he wanted.â I swallowed, handing back the bowl to North as I shrugged back into my jacket. I felt cold suddenly as I blew into my hands.Â
I smiled. "I'll hold onto my knives for now. Besides, I've never used one. I'm sure I'd end up my own eye out instead of my opponent's anyways. I'll be deadly enough with these," I added, running a finger down one of the smooth blades. It made me feel like I had a little piece of Cam along with me, besides his pin, of course. The little wolf was still on my collar and it'd given me peace since we'd come in yesterday.Â
Losing your partner was never easy. Careers were always told to gloss over it but it was a reality that you were the only one representing your home when your partner was killed. "I hope it was, too," I mused. "Quick's good, I'd kill quickly if I could. But sometimes you can't help drawing it out." I took the lid of my thermos back and put it away.Â
"You want to sleep first tonight?" I asked. She looked chilly and I figured after losing Calin she might want to sleep it off. "Besides, when you take watch when I sleep you can work on our river-crossing apparatus and it'll be all ready for when I get my sleep too."
Webs We Weave || Arena Day Two
North tiptoed over to me just as I was applying the finishing touches to the slingshot. I had no sponsor for fancy gifts but I really didnât need any. I was capable of making my own weapons and looking after myself. It was how Iâd got here in the first place. I accepted the bowl of stew, thanking North for her charity as I broke off pieces of the bread into the stew. It was nice to have a hot meal, something to keep the chill that swept off the river from clinging to our backs.
We ate in relative silence before I looked up. âI couldnât, they were your gift. Besides Iâm better with a mace than anything. I was lucky to get it in the cornucopia.â I returned to eating just as night started to fall. Using the remnants of the roll to scrape the sides of the bowl as the anthem started to play. Three were dead. Calin. The boy Mika had ran off with and the redhead. So many had died on Day One that looking up and seeing only the three faces filled me with a sense of dread. âTheyâll want action tomorrow.âÂ
I was impressed with the quality of the weapon as I weighed the slingshot in my hand, running my fingers over it. "Damn, you weren't kidding that you were good at this," I remarked. "There's a ton of rocks by the riverbed, we'll have to grab some before tomorrow." We had a nice warm meal together as we took in the quiet of the forest by night.Â
Nodding, I understood what she meant. I'd pass her off one in a fight if I needed to, we'd cross that bridge when we came to it. "You were, we got lucky with what we got," I added softly, touching my trident at my side. The anthem played a few moments later, and I peeked up as I munched on my roll. I reached over to squeeze Sloane's arm as Calin's face lit up the sky. Next, Pachenko, meaning Mika was likely alone now. And Dotev. "I agree, it's a good thing we're close to the castle now, likely the people are close to it too, we'll have to hunt... you okay? With Calin and all."Â
Webs We Weave || Arena Day Two
Another gift arrived, it seemed like Northâs sponsor knew just when to show her tribute of choice how much she believed in her. Last night it had been a torch, tonight it was a weapon and food that didnât come pre-packaged. I had to admit I was a little jealous, but it was just how things worked out. I moved further into the tree line, sitting down on a log as I dropped my pack at my feet. Shrugging out of my jacket, I set it on the ground lifting my axe to cleave off part of the fur collar. I had an idea and while North busied herself with her gift I wanted to see if this would work.
I strayed away from my pack, going in search of just the right âYâ shaped stick, finding it and returning to my pack as my head filled with ideas. I sat, scraping off the fur from the leather to cut two thin strips of leather. Laying them across my jeans, before pulling the hair tie from my hair. I finger combed my hair back, using one strip of leather to tie it at the back of my neck. I sliced through the elastic, fixing it to the sticks in my own crude way. The second piece of leather was wrapped around the middle giving me a small cup to dispense a rock from in my new slingshot. It was basic but it was something else I could use. âSeems like someone knew that, huh?â
Sloane crept into the treeline as I got my gift. I tried not to gloat, really, I did, but it was hard not to. I focused on organizing my stuff, strapping the belt of knives around my waist before I got the food out. The lid of the thermos was round and served as a bowl, so I poured half of it out into the little dish for Sloane and kept the rest for myself. I put one of the rolls into the bowl with a spoon and walked the short distance over to her.Â
"Brought you dinner," I smiled, passing her her share of the stew. I sat down next to her and took a bite of mine, thankful for the food. "That looks fantastic... no idea how you came up with that, but it's awesome." We ate in quiet for a moment before I nodded in reply. "I guess they did, I'm thankful for it. Not having a blade is never good... if you want to take one, that'd be alright with me."Â

Between the spiders and the forest we really had been having a sick sense of deja vu. Weâd barely seen any of the arena past this forest and even though I was thankful to be in one piece, my hands itched with the desire to get dirty. To demonstrate some of the skill Iâd shown in Private Training. To show the Capitol what we were capable of back in Three. âI have to admit, Iâm kind of sick of all the trees.âÂ
The possibility of crossing the river and slipping into the Castle was something we needed to do but in the waning light it was dangerous. âTomorrow morning, we can wake before dawn and I can assemble our crossing.â I couldnât do it in the dark even if North held her torch. I needed to at least be able to see what I was doing unless we wanted to end up neck deep in the water again. âWe can make camp, have something to eat and I might have a nifty little invention that could come in handy when we cross tomorrow.â
I nodded earnestly in agreement. "Agreed. Everything just looks the same, it's enough to drive anyone absolutely insane." I nodded in agreement. Crossing right now would be incredibly stupid, but taking it before dawn ensured we could camp out here tonight and hit it tomorrow with full energy and ability. "Sounds good," I added. "I trust you not to drown us," I added teasingly.Â
I was just about to ask about what she had in mind when the beeping of a parachute interrupted me. It got caught on a branch and I jumped up a bit to grab it, pulling it down. "I think Esmeralda took care of dinner for us," I joked, seeing the thick stew through the clear lid of the thermos. Rolls, two spoons... and six shining throwing knives. I knelt down, pulling out the knives and smiling softly.Â
"These were Cam's weapon of choice, the only reason I'm as good with them as I am is because I spent hours and hours training to beat him with them," I explained with a laugh.Â
A large parachute floats down to North. Â Inside, is a thermos of hot stew, two spoons, four warm rolls, and six throwing knives.
"Keep yourself and that friend of yours warm. Â Youâre almost there!" -Esmeralda
