Two days of coding, some high-school maths and some atrocious hacks and my very simple 2D physics seems to be working.
It feels good to scale back and just write everything myself. This is done in LÖVE framework, and so far I’m liking both the framework and Lua as a programming language.
And we’re live!
I’m streaming some UE4 tonight, to test how streaming gamedev might look like. You’re welcome to join and watch at: https://www.twitch.tv/nora_sellisa ! There will be no mic, and I won’t spend too much time in the chat, but if you want to see some UE4 and listen to some Metroid Prime OST then do come by :) I’ll probably only stream for an hour or two - we’ll see.
Who knew, thrusters are actually fun.
I sometimes feel I shouldn’t ever be allowed near a game engine, all the “”””success”””” from last post was: a) not really working, as it turns out b) redundant, as UE4 has a way to define a singleton class that is created with the engine, is accessible anywhere, and is never garbage collected -_-

One horribly disgusting include of a .cpp file later, this colourful mess can commence.
I want to get back to dev again, but working full time & university ruin any chance. I have a plan though, I’ll be posting small coding problems that I’ll face during development. So it probably won’t be flashy, It’ll probably be a bit of C++ code, maybe some explanations to make it educational. Probably no sooner than Monday though :/
I may or may not have discovered something great.
Development-wise you can still consider me dead, it will be easier that way.
Sorry for all the radio silence lately. I was busy and/or lazy, got my B.Eng, and had a lot of other things to sort out. Meanwhile, vertex shaders are coming along nicely..
Ain't she a thing of beauty.

This does not look like much, but you have to believe me that under the hood everything except for moving the target to chase (green ball) and rendering arrows is done in pure C++. First time I wrote such a piece of UE4 code in C++ instead of blueprints. Upgrading to VS2017 was a huge help, for sure. Oh, and now the spider does not merely calculate where legs should be, it has a bunch of SceneComponents representing every joint. Right now I attach the arrows there, but it’ll be just as easy to add StaticMeshes to give the spider a model.
Now, I just need to expose some parameters like step length and leg length to blueprint and I’ve got a sweet reusable component to quickly build all robo-spider nightmares I can come up with.
Feels good.
It took me five days of different approaches, but a semi-okay walking spider is here. I have three ideas that could use it, so my next task will be to turn this into a reusable component that I can just drop in to an actor and have it just work.
Please consider sharing and spreading the word for Jack’s charity live stream to help the American suicide prevention agencies. It’s an important step in the right direction to help eliminate the negativity Logan Paul is spreading throughout the net.
The side effect of consuming so much content on game development and design is that there are times when basically anything is enough to spark an idea. In my head I just jumped from VR horror to cutesy RTS. Please, someone make it stop.
Each year as the end draws near I promise myself I’ll make at least one game, so that the whole year won’t be fruitless. And even though I can’t work on my last project (since I don’t have neither the oculus nor the hardware to power it) it didn’t stop me from creating yet another “third person example” UE4 project and messing around it.Â

Editor crashes each time I try to go for a VR preview. Game starts crashing too. Even though there was 3 more days of the jam I had only one left before leaving home for christmas, where I’ll have neither my oculus nor a good pc for dev.
This is it, I left the jam. The project will live on in 2018. Merry Christmas and see you all (those two other devs who like my posts) in 2018. I might post an asset here or there but no promises.
I TOLD YOU THERE WILL BE PROGRESS. This might not seem like much. I get it, believe me. But figuring out how everything connects to itself and to player’s hands was a chore. Hand waving at the end was just me feeling joy that this is behind me. Now, onto next tasks. There isn't much time left and I got only one core mechanic down, but I am optimistic. We’re back in the game, baby!Â
