Was going to go by myself for this trip, but my friend decided to join at the last minute. It was warm (low 80s) and there were mosquitoes (wtf, I blame the previous day's abnormal humidity). New tent was pretty easy to set up, didn't have too much trouble even though it's semi-freestanding and the ground was kind of rocky and hardpacked.
The sad part of this camping trip is that when my friend and I were waiting to check in, he and I noticed this boat docked near the ranger station. It was full of people, and there was a party atmosphere. There was just something off about the boat... the guy on the loudspeaker sounded unprofessional (for lack of a better descriptor) and maybe we're just more used to seeing chartered boats or ferries docked at Angel Island, but something was unusual enough about this that my friend and I both stared at this boat for a while.
When we got to our site about an hour later and finished setting up, he checked his phone and there was a news alert that a boat had capsized in the bay. There was some helicopter footage, and it looked exactly like the boat that we had seen during check-in... The latest update is that one person and a dog died and three are missing. This really shook us, and we talked to a ranger about it the following morning, who basically confirmed that this was the one that was docked there the previous afternoon. 😥 Life is short, spend time with your loved ones and enjoy all the little things. And if you get on a boat, make sure there are life vests available and within reach.
