trickcardā:
āā You quietly listen to what he has to tell you, figuring that was the answer. But when he says he was training⦠did he mean running? Was he lifting weights? Orā¦
Ā You furrow your brow, tilting your head a tiny bit as you try to read him better. But the guilt on his face could mean anything, and yelling or asking bluntly could just make him want to retract more.
And yet, knowing itās the wrong option, you pick authenticity anyway.
āYou thought Iād make fun of you?ā You look to him for a moment, meeting his eyes and holding the contact for a few seconds. You donāt hide the hurt, or disbelief. Youāre not sure what would be worse, if heās lying to save face, or if thatās the honest truth. What did you do to make him feel like he couldnāt come to you ā to feel like you werenāt a team?Ā
You think back to the night of the dance, how you rested your head on his shoulder on the bathroom floor. How he looked so in his own head back in the hallway. You replay the sleepover in your head, walking by his side with a bag of cheeseburgers. You thought things were okay.Ā
Maybe you donāt know anything.Ā
āI wouldnāt have,ā you tell him, quietly. āI wanted to know why we werenāt talking.ā
You fall quiet afterwards, the ticking of a clock from down the hall audible even from where youāre sitting. These walls are so thin. Itās not like Leblanc, where everything is thick and sturdy, covered in dust. But at least it smells like home, despite Ryuji feeling worlds away.Ā
āWas it something I did?ā
The silence is suffocating, and he canāt help but wonder if heās going to have messed this up irreparably. Between his fucked up headspace and inability to voice all the words choking him like too much sea water, he wouldnāt be surprised. But the thought of losing Akira...his best friend...it makes him want to puke. Without him, heād be nothing, would have nothing left. He breathes, brow furrowed.
āNo, never, thatās not what I-ā he cuts himself off, trying to keep his nerves steady, to control the words that try to flow from his mouth,Ā ādamn it.āĀ
He takes another deep breath, twisting the sheets in his hands, āYou didnāt do anything, dude, itās...shit I aināt good at talkinā about this kinda stuff, I....āĀ
He has to be honest about something, Akiraās hurt expression like a punch to the gut, he canāt just lie to him. Heād be the worst kind of friend then.Ā
āI wanna be able to stand beside you...ā he starts, voice suddenly small,Ā ābut I feel like...like Iām competing with myself...itās stupid and I know you and the others would just tell me Iām fine the way I am...and maybe this is how Makoto and Yusuke are feeling but...I feel like...Iām gonna let you down.āĀ
Another breath, eyes glued on the hand on his knee,Ā āI didnāt come talk to you cause I knew Iād end up spilling all this shit but...itās hard, knowinā that Iām missing somethinā, and I feel like Iām just gonna drag you guys down, I aināt as powered up as you and...I donāt want you to leave me behind.āĀ
The words just keep coming, and his face is hot.Ā
āAnd once I got that idea in my head I just...I couldnāt shake it...It wouldnāt be the first time. And I knowĀ you wouldnāt, I do, I just...I got in my own head and needed to blow off some steam and before I knew it Iād overdone it and I just...didnāt want you thinkinā that I wasnāt someone you could depend on.ā
He knows his words are a mess, that they only half make sense, and he goes silent, refusing to make eye contact, in part because heās scared of what expression heāll find there, and because heās not sure if heād end up spilling more than he means to. How he doesnāt want to get left behind by the two people that matter most to him, that make him feel wholly himself, totally at home. He wants to put his hand over Akiraās on his knee like a reassurance, but even that feels like too much, and right when heād told himself heād stop getting between them, so he doesnāt, biting the inside of his cheek instead.Ā
