You all presumably know the facts of life by now. The birds do it. The bees do it. Hopefully you’re all doing it, too. Sex is, obviously, everywhere. And Prince and most of his songs are no exception. Ladies seem to love Prince when he begins to stroke the guitar or when he starts grinding out those licks. This has left an indelible mark (or wet panties) on many purple ladies..
I wanted to take a look at one of the songs that pays tribute to dancing in the sheets. There were too many to choose from, so it was hard to find one that really spelled out SEX . Some of these are subtle, using some clever metaphors and imagery to get the message across. Some of them are not subtle at all. But then again, if you’re wanting lyrical poetry, Prince was the master (or the daddy) of it,
Generally speaking, men seek sex because they like how it feels. Women, although they very well may also derive pleasure from the act, are generally more interested in the relationship enhancement that sex offers. Prince knew did and adapted it well to many of hs songs but then he quickly began to mix and dilute both of these.
Body centred sex is where you are only interested in your own physical pleasure, the other person is just there doing a job but i believe Prince knew he was onto something better where both can derive pleasure. Person centred sex is when you have sex to connect with the other person. You care about the emotions involved and the relationship, this is where Prince was heading with many of his songs, the connection (both spiritual and physical and the full attention on your lover) was what got him excited not the other way around. his lyrics deal with pleasuring his partner ( how many songs has he recorded which talk about oral sex?)
The one song to me screams out SEX is an underrated cut from his 90′s masterpiece The Gold Experience, no it’s not The Most Beautiful Girl In The world (that’s more of a wedding soon) no im talking about ‘Shhh’(more of a honeymoon song).
There something deeply freudian about the imagery in this track, private affair, break it down, after school, ball of wax all these are staples of 70′s R,n,B but none were used and adapted like Prince was doing. He bought those lyrics right up to date with screeching guitar solo’s and that undescribable drum intro which has to be heard to be believed.
The song is structured as a sex act, the beginning drum intro is when you know both of you are getting ready and have acknowledged each others intention - the excitement. The first 2 chorus to me are always about the touching, the kissing the feeling of the other’s body close to yours. The first guitar solo is to me the first true sexual act, it could be the beginning of performing oral sex on your partner (his guitar solo’s in the song are sex acts) the second chorus is again the heavy touching and deep passionate kissing that bridges the sexual acts together. the second guitar solo is where it really gets down, the screeching, grinding and fluid dripping solo is a thing of sexual ecstacy.Just listen to it again and you wont be able to keep your hands above your waist.The songs slowly comes back down which is the end of the sexual act itself - the way in which he sings ‘down, down, down, down’ as the somgs comes to the climax screams of ejaculation. The ‘I love you’ is what im hoping you say to your partner after the business is done and not you saying it as you roll over and hit door grabbing your pants as you leave.
Prince sang the song live during the Gold Tour and he made it sound a bit more aggressive than it actually was on the record but where he really did the song justice was during the musicology tour. I have a video from a New York show he did on the 13th of July 2004 and its probably my favourite version of Shhh for the only reason that he performs a guitar solo that actually bought me to tears, i mean like real tears because at that time i was preparing to get married and the love we had between me and my wife was so strong and unique that this song in that video performed on that date just struck a profound chord in me.it still sends shivers through my whole body, the version of Shhh made me see the song not just as a carnal piece of audio sex but as something deeper and more connected to spiritual sex.
It’s the most complete SEX song he has ever recorded, both the physical and spiritual aspects coming together in unison to create something that only bodies can describe. Its lyrical beauty is second to non, the closest another song has come to capture it’s stunning beaty is HARDROCKLOVER from the Hit n Run Phase 1 album. That song almost captures the magic and guitar fluidity from Shhh but where that song falls a bit short is with the lyrics are more concerned about the introduction of the participants whereas Shhh is about the act of SEX itself.
So please do yourselves a favour and give this song a spin if your partners are in the mood (your prince friends, you should always be in the mood!) Its needs to be experienced by 2 people (or more!) together in unison.
Also a quick mention to Tevin Campbell’s version which was released on his ‘I’m Ready’ album with a few other Prince penned tracks, it’s a decent 90′s slice of sweaty R’n’B cool but nothing compared to the majestic quality of prince’s. If Tevin’s is a toyota then Prince’s version is a Ferrari.
