Aboriginal by viljakarkkainen
January 26 is reserved as #AustraliaDay in the land down under. A celebration it marks the 1788 arrival of the first fleet of British ships at New South Wales. today is also known as #InvasionDay, a stark reminder of the sufferings of the indigenous population ever since. The phrase #whiteaustraliahasablackhistory was also penned to remind those of the melaninated beings that called (and still) their land home. Noted that #aboriginals have a variety of skin complexions. To learn more of this topic I recommend the 2013 documentary “Utopia” and the book by Bruce Elder called “Blood On the Wattle” (not for those with a weak stomach).

Aboriginal Saami of Norway
Funny cos it’s true?
Hundreds have protested deaths in custody at G20 with minimal coverage by the mainstream media. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody, whose report was released in 1991, had provided 339 common sense recommendations as well as a explicit condemnation of shocking Indigenous incarceration rates. More than 20 years later incarceration rates are increasing, First nation people making up 26% of the population and only 2.6% of the population. For juveniles the rates are even more staggering reaching up to 80% in some jurisdictions. Since the report very few recommendations have been implemented. For example the following recommendations:
87. Arrest people only when no other way exists for dealing with a problem.
92. Imprisonment should be utilised only as a sanction of last resort.
161. Police and prison officers should seek medical attention immediately if any doubt arises as to a detainee’s condition.
are not only common sense recommendations but would have avoided the death of a proud first Nations woman, 22 year old Ms Dhu earlier this year, who was jailed for unpaid fines and then denied access to a doctor three times while in custody. Continued indifference to First Nation suffering and oppression is not acceptable.

Truth
Reports estimate that by 2050 all of Australia’s indigenous languages would of died out. Before the invasion of Australia in 1788 there were an estimated 350-750 Aboriginal languages and dialects in use in Australia. As of the 21st century 150 remain in daily use with almost all but 20 of them considered to be endangered. The largest of these groups such as Warlpiri and Tiwi retain between 1000-3000 native speakers.

Some shots I took from a visit to a Malaysian Aboriginal village (known as Orang Asli - which literally translates as Original People) located on Banjaran Titiwangsa in Perak, Malaysia.
