Ok but hear me out...

A story/series where the main char who looks so plain is approached by a hero like or legendary warrior looking dude and is told that Mr. Plain dude is the chosen of the prophecy and is sent on a quest to a far and dangerous lands. The main char then meets his comrades on his quest, along with enemies, rivals, love interests, etc. All calling him "the Chosen One" and "Fate's Hero." Then comes the climax of the quest and the big bad or something is confronted by the heroes and goes "Ah... Hero Protagonistman, alas we meet and-"

The main char then goes like "Wait... But my name is Steve"

And it turns out that the chosen of the Prophecy was the Hero that sent our dude on the quest trying to evade responsibility because he couldn't be bothered to do it.

So he just got a random schmuck from the streets to do his quest for him and hoped destiny wouldn't notice
