the ground beneath their shoes had been scorched , from the blast and the subsequent fire that had spread across the terrain. the fire had eaten everything in its path , gluttonous , favoring all who were unfortunate enough to be within it. bodies were scattered , though the police and fire department were doing their best to collect them , to bring them where home could collect them. dante's gaze danced from one to another , but he couldn't focus.
maybe it was the smoke , perhaps it was the screaming that still echoed in his ears. maybe it was his own mind playing tricks on him. creating false statements that he'd focus on the next body , only to see sloane's face staring back at him. his jaw tensed , the muscles popped , and he only came back into focus when sophia's words echoed through his mind.
the words stuck with him , as he came to a slow halt. he shouldn't care , they'd chosen their affiliation. they had staked their lives with the mob , chosen that path for themselves. but even as he counted off the reasons , he found himself taking that step closer. to pivot in their direction. just as his hand came up. fingers pressed first to his forehead , then the center of his chest , his left shoulder , and finally , his right shoulder. all while the words fell silently from his tongue.
it was the least he could do.
in the blink of an eye , the moment had passed. and dante had stepped away , drawn back to the matter at hand. to the situation that still faced them. and he'd barely made it a few more steps before the reality hit him. like a punch to the gut , a slap to the face. like he'd been hit by an eighteen wheeler that hadn't even attempted to stop or slow its collision.
❝ god , no. ❞ the words tasted like sacrilege , but he couldn't seem to be bothered. not when the truth lay in front of him. burned , broken , the remnants of the man that he once was. dante stumbled as he stepped closer , until he slowly , carefully eased himself closer to the ground. closer to the broken body. his hand reached out , hesitated in the air , before he pressed it to the man's unmoving chest. this couldn't be happening.
