because stefan is already defensive about having a brother (an older one especially) and how this person could upset his and his sister's lives, but then there's the branch rivalry. and 1000% stefan doesn't have much respect for air force/ naval pilots in the way a lot of enlisted men do in this inner branch rivalry (flyboy...ect).

dominic flys in big toys vs stefan who highly specialized ops into extremely dangerous situations that are so high security his family doesn't know where he was 98% of the time he was in the service. stefan has horrific nightmares and can't speak to anyone about what happened due to the high security clearance leaving him often shut down and distant from near everyone vs dominic who also has lost pilot friends and buddies, but it was always more at a distance compared to the up close intense trauma that stefan dealt with and lead men into.

in comparison to dominic, who still can find a way to laugh easily, charm quickly and be the most socialized and have more relationships (romantic and others). it frustrates stefan beyond belief. he gave and grew and sacrificed and he feels he's stunted despite giving his all, but everyone is going to want and love dominic over him.

his sister, liesel, immediately bonds and gets close to dominic. romantic relationships wise its the same story as it always is for stefan. dominic is 'fireworks' and stefan is a 'hearth' and most people want the fireworks and passionate romance- which is not stefan's MO when it comes to relationships if it lasts long enough for him to be 'intimate' with someone (in an emotional aspect not physical- he gets enough of the sexual relationships which don't interest him as much as one would think). versus dominic who can maintain a variety of relationships of all kinds and seemingly fit in everywhere and with everyone.

Home sweet home.

The trim of her skirt was soaked, caked in mud and grass, from running through puddles of water through the rain, cutting across various neighbors gardens. All to sneak into her own yard, swiping up the hidden spare key to enter her shop.

A shop she hadn't seen in what felt like ages. The quite dim of it was a comfort as she locked the door behind her and sloshed inside. The tears nearly bursting through in relief to finally be home. In her home. The bookstore was exactly as she left it and she knew the second floor, her flat, would be just the same.

Which was why she stumbled forward through a door and up the stairs to her floor. Fingers shaking with the key to open it and stumble inside to the open floor plan.

A lamp light was on. She knew she didn't leave it on. She also knew the figure reclining on her armchair beside the small fireplace already blazing. Soaked from the downpour Liesel stood as the door clicked shut behind her, the soft patter of the water dripping in a pool around her as she stared at the figure.

Heart pounding, dispair rising, she could only croak out one horrified word. "No."
