ABSTRACT small clean space is a performance-based project that combines wearable LED technology with a simple biofeedback mechanism. A performer wearing a modified Tyvek garment will move around a dark space, while a sensor hooked up to a set of LEDs will illuminate the garment in rhythm with the performer’s heart rate. In this way, the visibility of garment, body, and performance all becomes solely contingent on the output of a beating heart – an element of our physiological “homes” that consistently avoids our day-to-day awareness, yet is fundamentally central to our existence. PROPOSAL This project is meant as a meditation of public vs. private, and the vulnerability of our only “true” homes – our physical bodies. Lead by a deep culturally-embedded Cartesianism, we often view our bodies as temporary shelters within which our rational selves reside. Like a physical home or traditional domicile, we care for and make improvements on our bodies all the while remaining oblivious to the profound kinesthetic, somatic intellect that resides in our skins, muscles, bones and sinews. The reality is far more complex – our bodies are inseparable from our experience of self, constantly reacting to our surroundings and carrying a memory of every sensation that we encounter. small clean space makes the intimate rhythm of the body public, challenging both viewers and performer: the performer to enter a place of vulnerability and honesty as their heart-rate and physiological data is revealed to the onlookers, and the viewers as their ability to see becomes immediately dependent on an element of the body that is ubiquitous yet invisible in our day-to-day lives. The distressed/embellished Tyvek suit subverts the original nature of this industrial garment, allowing the inner flesh of the wearer to be briefly visible through delicately cut away patterns and designs. Materially speaking, Tyvek is a human-made non-woven fiber that is neither fabric nor paper, yet has the properties of both. During the performance, the wearer will echo this duality, existing as both protected and vulnerable, both concealed and exposed. MATERIALIZATION The project will consist of the following components: 1) The outer Tyvek shell/suit (already complete) 2) A nude unitard onto which electronic various components can be attached 3) A pulse sensor 4) A wearable Arduino unit & power supply 5) 40-50 individual LEDs and connective wire or thread The project will be displayed as an interactive performance in a completely dark room. The performer will wear the sensor suit underneath the Tyvek garment, and slowly move around the circumference of the room. The experience of a small, clean space will be unique both to the physical environment in which the performance occurs, as well as to the performer’s own inner ability to control their heart rate. ----- Do you have any comments of feedback for this project?
