On a Saturday morning... the kid and I like to hang out. There is much one can learn from parenting. I think we learn almost as much as the kid from it. Yesterday, we played Cricket. The kid goes to Cricket holiday club during the school break and he wanted to practice before it starts. So... yesterday's session, I had to teach him/let him practice his catching skills. Here's the thing... kids have no chill when it comes to how long an activity remains interesting for adults. "Catching" is not as interesting for someone who has been doing it for so long! For them... it's a brand new experience and they will keep at it for as long as there is a ball coming at them. I must have hit the ball into the air at least 100 times. He caught it only thrice. He would not let up though. He followed the technique everytime but didn't catch it everytime. :-) I praised and encouraged him when he got it right. Something so menial for me, is a challenge for him... we are at different places of learning/development... what seems like repetitive failure to me... is progress for him! His hand/eye coordination has only been trained to catch medium size balls. He is good at that but now the next stage of development is harder and require even better coordination. The process will help him later in life. I eventually asked him to throw the ball to me and I pretended to also miss it a few times. Why? Because sometimes those who look up to you need to know you make mistakes too. You aren't super human. If all they ever know is how bad they are compared to you... you aren't teaching them anything. They need to know you drop the ball sometimes too... and that's OK! Trial and error is a result of being alive. Or as the text puts it. "We have all missed the mark and fallen short of the Glory of God". Romans 3v23.
