I. Things you see while driving north in Tucson
the mountains. you're close enough to see the other shapes emerging from their rocky faces -- the valley here, the bluff there, the spire, the horn, the ridge. you're close enough to see the shadows on their flanks like cool, lazy hands, sliding over the stubborn forest, the roads you can't discern.
then the sun slides west and it blurs red and gold, a brief united front against the greying sky. then it leaves altogether.
at night you can see all the traffic lights on Swan, up, and up, and up, green, yellow, red, green, green, green.
