BACKSTORY:

Niklaus was born into poverty in 1923 to a fisherman of a father and a mother who made dresses out of their tiny 3 bedroom house. He is the 2nd born and the first boy of 7 children. He attending school in the middle of grade 7 when his father died during the Second World War and started working in a paint factory to help support the family

In 1942, at just 19, Niklaus enlisted in the German army to further support his family as his factory had been closed down a few months prior

He never believed in the war or most of the news of why they were fighting. He believed what his parents taught him that the world wasn’t as black and white as the politicians in charge made it seem to be

As the war took its final turn, Niklaus fled his post upon learning of the true horrors of the army he was fighting for. During his abandoned, he helped 3 men and a woman flea from their annex to flea with him

In the snowy woods away from most of the fighting, Niklaus broke his leg but continued on the march of hope to freedom, making the break worse, eventually stopping in a small cave in a hillside while telling the others to go on without him

When Elric arrived, he was sure he was hallucinating from the infection in his leg and told the man his story, forcing mostly on his siblings back home and of the stories of the 4 people he had been traveling with. He spoke of all of them with fondness, praying they all lived to the end of the violence they were stuck in

When Elric asked him what he would do if he was given the gift of immortality, he laughed and said he would use his immortality to kill Hitler and end the war. He then went on to say he’d spend the rest of his days trying to make amends with every single person he wrong by joining the German army

The next thing he knew he was crawling out of the dirt, scared and confused with a powerful hunger he couldn’t understand. Elric stayed with him through the haze of being a newborn and helped him feed and explained what was in fact happening

For years following the end of the war and his transformation, Niklaus followed Elric dutifully while he learned to control himself. Even after he was “set free” to be on his own, he chose to stick close to the elder, unable to bring himself to return to his family.

Years after his transformation, through word of mouth and public records, he learned that two of his sisters, and a brother had all perished since he had left for the war. His mother had been put into an asylum, diagnosed with insanity upon the death of so many of her children.

During his travels, he kept his promise to his maker and did his best to help where he could in efforts to help after the war. For years he worked rebuilding the distractions and helping to reconnect families separated by the war

In the mid seventies, he left Elric’s companionship to explore for himself. While many moved on with their lives as yet another war ended, he dwelled in the past, still donating large sums of money to various organizations and charities that were founded due to the wars

In his travels people cared less about the accent he couldn’t shake and more about who he was. He lied of course, saying he fled his homeland with his family if he was ever asked, claiming to have lived in the slums of New York City,

“Elric. He’s ancient.”

        With Dusk’s promotion at the bank she was going well…a bit wild with her spending. She’d told herself that she would treat herself for the first month of her new promotion and then get her finances in order the way they should actually be and she intended to stick to that but she still had a week of going wild with her raise. It was…well, maybe silly, but Dusk had decided that skincare, new towels and a new cookware set were not enough, she wanted to do something fun. So, on a Sunday without the kids she had decided to go to the most expensive bakery in Wolford and go nuts on treats.

           “You have to try this,” she told the next person who walked inside, holding out a keylime sugar cookie from a pack of four she had just bought. “It is so delicious and soft, how are sugar cookies so soft?”          

Niklaus enjoyed the outdoors, even if the sun was still a pain to both his eyes and his skin. Other vampires and witches he talked to told him as long as he wore his ring, he was fine. That any burning he felt was all in his head. Twisting the ring on his finger, he had to remind himself that he was fine. If he was going to burst into flames it would have happened already. After all, he had been sitting in the shade for nearly twenty minutes as he picked at his lunch.

Normally when it came to draining blood from bodies, Niklaus would simply drain the directly from the vein into a jar for selling. It was only slightly different than how he would drain a body simply for embalming. As of late, he had had a few live clients that required a more delicate hand. Getting his hands on the blood drawing equipment was easy. Working closely with the hospital had had him a few friends with nurses who would give him what he needed. Live blood sold quickly and was harder to come by than that of the dead. Thankfully business was slow as the popularity of specific blood banks for vampires grew. Although that was on a strictly voluntary basis. Rarely did the vampire choose what kind of blood they were receiving and the donor was doing it out of the kindness of their heart. Niklaus paid handsomely for donors and charged next to nothing to the pickier vampires. Or just those who didn’t enjoy the blood banks.

Vera was a regular donor. Not that Nik minded in the least. She was nice and pretty with sweet blood that sold quickly. When he didn’t keep it for himself. Normally Nik sustained himself on the blood of the dead like he had for decades or animals he hunted. Biting people always came with risks. Draining them dry was his biggest concern. Even just hurting them was a concern of his. So drinking from the source of a human was something he tried not to partake in.
