I think that Kuusuke makes really yucky and unappealing meals because he views eating as a tiresome chore you need to do regularly to not die and as such chooses meals based purely based on the basic nutritional requirements that he needs them to fulfil, without considering how they will taste at all. The latter probably feeds back into the former, no pun intended.
