Todd and Amanda’s eyes
I was wondering if anyone else noticed, when Todd and Amanda are in the backstage place, and their eyes go all weird and mandelbrot? I didn’t notice the first time, but their eyes are a little different.
Todd’s mandelbrot eyes point inwards.
Amanda’s mandelbrot point outwards.
Knowing this show, the design choice was definitely on purpose. Mandelbrot sets grow outwards from the largest heart shape, getting finer and more complex until they are too small to see. It is a good representation of the will of the universe, of a few large events that ripple outwards touching thousands of little things.
Now for the Brotzman siblings, Amanda’s mandelbrot set would grow outwards, connecting with everything. This is probably something to do with her new quest, collecting the tools to fix the universe. It also reflects Amanda’s tendency to look outwards. Most of her motivations across s1 and s2 are selfless, either to help people or make things easier for others. When Todd was “sick” Amanda did everything she could to give him a good night out. She helped Vogel, who she barely knew at the time, to track down the other rowdies. The moment she learned of the conflict in Wendimoor, she vowed to help. She befriends nearly everyone she meets.
Todd, in contrast, looks inwards. He has repeatedly acted in incredibly selfish ways, and even now when he is trying to be better, Todd can’t bring himself to care for the well-being of people he doesn’t consider friends. He was happy to leave Dirk alone in a strange world, minutes after Dirk had a panic attack, just because Dirk didn’t immediately want to search the forest for Amanda. Todd was also ready to leave the people of Wendimoor to slaughter each other, as long as Amanda was safe.
It’s an interesting contrast, both looking in different directions with the same gift. And as Dirk said, together you can look in two places at one.
