Spencer didn’t understand you at all. Well, he did. Of course he did. Usually. But not in this moment.
Because it’s just been roughly an hour since you both arrived back at your apartment building, still exhilarated after one of your successful plays on stage, the happy and carefree air between you two making it feel as if the night would never end.
And some moment between closing the front door and opening the one to your bedroom, your lips were pressing against his, and you both stumbled onto your bed, loosing his tie here and your bra there, ending up entangled and close and intimate with and to each other.
And then, after, you lied entangled in Spencer’s arms, skin touching skin still, the blanket covering both your legs and nothing else.
He could only hear your breathing, how it slowed down into a rhythm he knew, he recognised. From all the years spent with you, being close to you, recognising it like a pattern, like a habit, something as obvious as your eye colour or your favourite movie.
He fell into a light slumber, in the darkness of your bedroom and the comfort of having you with him. He was tired and happy and he definitely nodded off for — minutes? An hour?
He wasn’t sure. But it didn’t feel long. He still lied there just like he did when he fell asleep. The night still hasn’t fallen away to morning light, but he felt the shift.
You didn’t lie close to him anymore. Not with your legs entangled with his, or your face pushing closer against his chest, your arms around him. No. He felt cold. He never felt cold when sleeping with you. Maybe that’s what’s woken him up.
Or, it was the whispering. The mumbling, the ones sometimes coming from you when you were completely focused on something. He listened to them fondly whenever you learned the lines of your new play, watching you walking around the living room in focus.
His eyes cracked open only a tiny bit, sleep wanting to pull him back already. But there was a glow, faintly, and he blinked, and then recognised it as your laptop.
And then the confusion sat in. He blinked a few more times, lifting his head slightly to get a better understanding of the situation.
You were still in bed (lucky him!), half lying-half sitting, perched up against a pillow you stuffed in between your back and the headboard of the bed. Against your knees sat your laptop, screen brightness turned as low as possible.
He could make out your focused frown, the small crease in between your eyebrows, which appeared whenever you were thinking. Your fingers danced over the touchpad of your laptop.
What?
And then-
“Are you playing GeoGuessr?!”
You stilled. He noticed it in the way your fingers stopped moving, the way your frown eased off your face and in the way your eyes lost their focus for a moment. Then you carefully glanced over at him.
You thought he fell asleep.
Which he did. You’ve counted his breathing, noticed how it evened out. The way it always did when sleep pulled him under its spell. Just like his facial expression always seemed to soften, making him look even younger, softer, more innocent.
But he seemingly wasn’t that deep asleep yet.
Spencer could only look at you, confused and slightly offended, but with a hint of amusement.
Because — what?
His gaze flickered to the alarm clock standing on the nightstand behind you — 2:16 am. You both came home around midnight. You literally had sex maybe an hour ago.
And now you were playing GeoGuessr like you haven’t given him one of his best orgasms just an hour ago! Like you haven’t completely wrecked his mind with your soft body against his, or the way your fingers and mouth felt on him.
And now you sat there and played GeoGuessr.
“I can explain,” you said, but didn’t continue. You just stared at Spencer, and he stared right back, and the silence settled in between you two for a moment.
“Uh-huh,” was his dry response, and there came no answer from you. Well, you had one. You had the truth. But-
“I had to work on my high score.”
“That is your explanation?”
“Uh-huh.”
Silence.
“It’s the middle of the night.”
“Yep.”
You said it so easily. As if it wasn’t unusual at all. As if you did this regularly — playing GeoGuessr right after sleeping with him. Which…you didn’t do, right? …right?
“Do you do this all the time after having sex?” The question escaped him almost right after thinking about it.
He felt a slight blush rising to his cheeks at the picture of him sleeping peacefully next to you while you played GeoGuessr. Of him being completely out of it, head comfortably numb and body fully relaxed, while you seemed to still have enough energy to play some game.
You blinked at him through the dim light of your laptop screen.
“Yeah,” you answered, adding: “it helps me relax?”
You noticed the strangeness of your statement the moment the words left your mouth, resulting in it sounding more like a question. Spencer also seemed to catch up on that.
The softness of sleep still hanging onto his expression melted away to his usual sharp intellect, which was always the first warning of him rambling off about a topic-related fact he needed to share.
“Actually, after an orgasm, the body shifts toward parasympathetic nervous system dominance, while stress-related activity decreases. Neurochemically, there is increased release of oxytocin and endogenous opioids, along with a drop in cortisol levels. These changes reduce arousal, lower muscle tension, and promote a state of physical and mental relaxation.”
You blink at him silently, taking in his rambling. He blinked back, asking silently with his gaze if you understood.
“…what’s your point?” Yeah, you decided to do it the hard way. Even with his use of factual language, you still got the memo of his explanation. You just wanted to see how he’ll answer to that.
Spencer blinked back at you, silence remaining between you both for a moment.
“I gave you three orgasms.”
He didn’t say it arrogantly, or even proudly. He just stated it as a normal fact to undermine his explanation. Like an example for a thesis he just made. Maybe that’s the reason you’re the one blushing now.
“It’s just…a different kind of relaxation,” you answered, lifting your shoulders in an almost-shrug before letting them fall down again.
“A different kind,” Spencer repeated. You nodded. He just looked at you for a few more seconds, expression not letting anything through, except the face he made whenever he worked through a theory to understand.
Then he nodded back at you, slowly.
“Let me watch.”
He scooted closer slowly, eyes still on your face. Searching it for a small twitch that would indicate your disagreement. When he didn’t find any, he finally came to rest right next to you again, already feeling your body heat warming his own body.
You always ran hot at night, which was perfect for him — he always felt too cold.
Now he was the one lying his head on your shoulder, body relaxing, eyes finding your laptop screen. He blinked a moment at the sudden brightness in the dim room.
You glanced down at him for a moment longer, heart beating at the picture of him looking so comfortable leaning against you. With his eyes sleepily blinking against the bright screen, his brown hair in complete disarray and slightly tickling the sensitive skin of your neck.
You blinked, shaking your head slightly to focus back on the game, and you started another round.
Spencer watched you play for a while, slowly but surely getting familiar with the game. He never was one for computer games, or the internet in general, but he had to admit that this looked rather fun.
Like every time he discovered a game about knowledge, he was hooked.
But he also realised that you seemed to be really good. Like, not halfheartedly guessing halfway through, or hastily searching for any indication of language to narrow down the country you’re in.
No, you looked like you knew exactly what you were doing!
“How did you possibly figure this out?” His voice came out quiet, surprising both him and you. He didn’t even intend to voice this question.
“The pavement.” It was your only response, and he quickly glanced up at your face. But you looked serious, already focused on the next round. His mind pulled the picture of the pavement back up, trying to figure out what you meant by that.
Even a genius could learn something new!
“The pavement?” he asked slowly, glancing back at the screen. You gave a small humming sound in response, finishing the third round and winning — of course.
“It was Argentinian pavement.”
He would definitely read up on the different kinds of pavement around the world.
