He was born into a family that occupied a precarious position between the middle class and the aristocracy. His father was a successful merchant who dealt in textiles and rare goods from the colonies, and whose caravans regularly traveled between London and Liverpool. From the moment he was born, Nicholas was not a quiet child; he was always boisterous, spoke his mind, and demanded a lot of attention. As the second son, he was left to his own devices, free from the burden of inheritance. But he was still heavily coddled due to his poor health. As he grew up, Nicholas’s childlike enthusiasm began to fade. He became quieter and spent all his time pursuing his interests. His main passion was writing. He had loved reading since childhood, and later tried his hand at writing himself. His parents didn’t take his hobby seriously, so Nicky kept at it. He remained a charming, likable young man who was always interesting to talk to.
